For those of you who are super anxious to get Microsoft’s latest OS release, Windows Phone 8 build 10327 (GDR2) along with Nokia’s highly anticipated Amber firmware update, there’s some good news for you today.

Users in our forums and on other sites have noticed that the files are now available on Nokia’s servers for the Lumia 820 and Lumia 920. The files can be downloaded and you can flash your device directly. The bad news is you need to flash your device, which means wiping out your current data and starting fresh as you install this new ROM. That’s opposed to the carrier-sanctioned method that will preserve your data. In addition, you are likely going to miss any custom firmware for your carrier, including possibly Data Sense, should you go down this route. [Note: checking under Settings > Phone Update won't yield any results]

Windows Phone 8 launched over half a year ago and the message was clear from both HTC and Nokia. Devices were going to be loud, colorful, and playful. They were to be an expression of the operating system they housed inside. The HTC 8X and Nokia Lumia 920 led the charge of premium handsets we could choose from. Both OEMs have recently been recognized for their work by the industrial design community. They did it by taking top spots in the communication tools category at the International Design Excellence Awards.

Ah, the Nokia Lumia 820 (see our review). A device so overlooked, I forgot I even had one (seriously, I just found one in my living room last week). It’s a shame really, as the device has a solid heft to it, gorgeous 800x480 4.3” display, a great 8MP camera and is just an outstanding device (save for its measly 8GB internal storage, which can be expanded with a microSD card).

So if you’re looking for a deal, the unlocked, non-carrier version can be found for a fairly good price of just $301 from the site SaleTab.com (and yes, they ship worldwide). We have no experience from buying a device from them, but they seem on the up and up and $300 for one a top performing Windows Phone 8 device is nothing to ignore.

Expansys UK has provided us with a red Nokia Lumia 820 Windows Phone, a wireless charging pillow, and a set of Bluetooth Monster headphones to give away to one lucky reader in the United Kingdom.

All our United Kingdom readers needed to do to enter is toss out a recommendation for a local retailer, business, bank or other local app. We received hundreds of suggestions with banking apps seeming to the popular request (Barclays, Lloyds, Ulster, etc.).

But alas, we could only have one winner selected at random from all the comments.

All you need to do to enter is:

  1. Live in the United Kingdom
  2. be a registered WPCentral.com member, which you can do here.
  3. post in the comments below what local app you'd like to see come to the Windows Phone Store.  It could be a UK banking app, retailer app, or anything that would make life more covenant in your neck of the woods.

Good news for those on Vodafone in Australia who own a Nokia Lumia 820, as tomorrow you’ll start to receive an over-the-air update to the 1308 firmware. What’s more, this just doesn’t improve device stability and performance but it also enables the 4G radio. Huzzah!

The rollout will be like others, meaning 25% will get the update in the first 5 days, followed by another 25% the next week and 100% of users by the end of the month.
