Here’s an interesting story worthy of the Weekly World News (an old tabloid reference, for you kids). Evidently a Nokia Lumia 920 was accidentally run over by a 24 ton Caterpillar “earth moving machine”, which is basically a ginormous dump truck. What’s interesting is that despite having its display crushed into what looks like a bazillion pieces (see above), the phone still technically works—even making phone calls.

Sure, you can’t hang up those phone calls but the fact that it turns on despite the body being “stretched” is still quite impressive. In fact, it’s because it still worked that they were able to find the phone, as someone evidently called it and they heard the ringer (it was found about a foot and half under the ground).

WP7Forum.ru member Eugen Diskin has published a video comparing the recording capabilities of the Nokia Lumia 920 and Samsung Galaxy S4. Sound familiar? It should as we've seen this done before with the Lumia 920 and a Galaxy S3. This time the two smartphones were mounted on to a toy vehicle and dragged along the floor.

Although by all accounts Nokia Lumia 920 owners are some of the happiest (and proudest) smartphone users out there, no phone is perfect and neither is any firmware update.

Recently, the 1308 firmware for Windows Phone 8 Lumias has begun rolling out, starting with AT&T and just this week heading out to other carriers globally.  Now, we’re getting numerous reports that the update, while adding advanced Storage Tools, improving sensors, tweaking some camera settings and more, has wrought some issues with the radio.

Indeed, from our own experience we too have witnessed these oddities with data and phone connections on our white AT&T Lumia 920 (clean install of the 1308 ROM). What makes the problem hard is it is not easy to quantify e.g. on occasion, it shows the phone being connected to LTE but data either trickles in or doesn’t come at all (both for uploads and downloads).

Reports have flooded in that the 1308 firmware update for Lumia 920 Windows Phones, which improves photo quality and implements the tool to help consumers manage the pesky "Other" storage, is rolling out in multiple European markets. The update has already been released in the US, but Europe wasn't far behind.

The Nokia Lumia 920 is available in a decent range of colors including black, white, cyan, red, yellow and in some places gray. A new color has surfaced on Nokia Jordan's Facebook page, green.

Call it spearmint, pastel green, lime green, or just plain old green we think it looks good. While pictured on Nokia Jordan's Facebook page there is no information on when or if this color option will make it to market.

We can only hope that if a green Lumia 920 sees the light of day, other carriers will pick it up (along with the gray). Hint, Hint AT&T.

Here’s a sneaky (and welcomed) little change that a few of you have tipped us on. It seems yesterday’s AT&T Lumia 920 firmware update, which will be going to other Lumias in the near future, is also sporting a few changes for the display time-out (found under Settings > Lock Screen).

Currently, some users on a few Windows Phone have only four options: 30 seconds, 1 minute, 3 minutes and 5 minutes. The choice determines how long your device will sit idle before the screen powers off (we opt for 3 minutes ourselves mostly due to photo and video shoots). Now, with the 1308 firmware for AT&T new timings have been added including 15 minutes, 30 minutes and Never.

If you haven’t already checked for a firmware update that's rolling out today on your AT&T Lumia 920, you should go ahead and do that now (or when you are near Wi-Fi). The update is a maintenance fix, bringing a lot of little changes and tweaks to your phone after Nokia received feedback from field testing.

The biggest addition to the 1308 firmware is the custom Storage Check tool made by Nokia that allows users to visually graph the allocation of storage space on their device. In addition, with a simple touch of a “Clear” button, users can now dump their temporary memory of the device, which for some means regaining a few gigabytes of space back.

On top of an already busy day for Windows Phone users, those with an AT&T Nokia Lumia 920 will be pleased to know that the 1308 firmware is now available to download over-the-air. We told you it was coming last week and it’s now here.

We’ve detailed some of the changes in 1308 before, including improved photo quality, Storage tools to clear out “Other” memory and eventually a color profile tool for the display.
