Preorders for AT&T Nokia Lumia 920 halted at Best Buy? [Updated]

WP Central

Update: The Lumia 920 is still hidden from the Best Buy system but if you use this link, you can still find it and evidently pre-order it. Thanks, anujtwp, for the link

Just this morning we woke up gleefully to find that Best Buy was finally taking pre-orders for AT&T’s Lumia 920 and the HTC 8X. Even better was what seemed like a fair price for the Lumia 920: $150 on contract, coming in below the normal $200 mark for high-end smartphones.

But alas, something is awry and the Lumia 920 has gone missing from Best Buy’s site. Even more odd is how the HTC 8X is still listed for pre-order. Glitch? Error? Sold out? We really have no idea and hopefully tomorrow either we’ll wake to find it fixed or we’ll ask Nokia if they know what’s going on with the whole deal.

In addition, some people who have pre-ordered the Lumia 920 mentioned to us a ship date of October 23 or 24th. While we don’t have any knowledge if that is accurate, we’re leaning on this being an error from Best Buy. We’re not expecting that phone to ship until November 4th—but hey, we like surprises just like anyone else.

Thanks for everyone who sent this in!

Very strange indeed.  Lets see what morning will bring us.

cwinger says:

Even more odd, if you pre ordered like I did, you may find your order doesn't exist within you or accCount now.

Originally this morning the order had a quick ship date, then changed to back ordered. Now it doesn't exist in my account.

astraith#WP says:

That's very odd, I know they were having trouble last night due to massive amount of people who ordered the phone and according to the guy I talked to today he said pre-order's stopped because of the massive amounts of preorders. So it's going to sell very well.

And I have no idea how Best Buy beat ATT at the preordering game, but I am going to order from ATT ASAP once it appears.

t.regal says:

I also pre-ordered yesterday. Just checked my account - still showing it's there, but I also can't cancel it.

I am switching carriers though, so starting a brand new contract may have something to do with it.

haefffffe says:

mine did the same thing. I checked last night and it disappeared. I called Best Buy mobile though and they said they were doing system maintenance and check this morning. so I did and it is now showing up.
one note, my confirmation email showed delivery of oct 23-24 but in my account info it shows as on back order, typcially ships in 1-2 weeks so...

J4rrod says:

How did Best Buy beat AT&T to their own preorder?

aubreyq says:

I know, right?

troyfrezze says:

I have been trying to check out all day. It's in my cart, but when I try to finalize it would give me an error code. I called support and the rude guy who answered kept telling me it wasn't available for pre-order yet. That I can't add it to my cart or anything. Told me they had put the site up and would take it down and back and forth as a test and place holder, but that the site wasn't ready yet. Kept telling me it wasn't pre-orderable just yet like I was an idiot when other people clearly have preordered it, I even went to my local BB today but couldn't preorder because the system was down at the time. It's still sitting in my cart and hopefully I'll be able to check out tomorrow...it is my birthday and all!

cwinger says:

They took my $650 without a problem.  It left my account.

stephen_az says:

If you are seriously concerned that they took your money, call the bank or credit card company and have them place a hold.  Nine times out ten times though when someone calls about something like this wit respect to a major retailer they will be informed by the bank that it is just a pre-authorization hold.

stephen_az says:

Whether the guy was rude or not is another subject; however, what he apparently said sounds quite reasonable.  Someone pulled a trigger and let a system go live that should have been locked and still just said coming soon when clicked.  Just because some people were able to "order" doesn't mean it was their intent to allow orders.  It happens and is hardly something about which it is worth getting upset.

VagrantWade says:

My order was removed and I was one of the first ones on the forums to order...

sRc#WP says:

my preorder originally said something like the 24th, but then they corrected it later in the day to say backordered shipped when available. now I can't see any orders in my account, including other orders that showed there earlier, so I think the account order status thing is broken now

firewall2302 says:

+1 on this - I had items that I ordered about a month ago that were showing this morning but aren't in my history at all now.

The entire order history system must be down.

I hope this doesn't mean they're removing the orders, just having a glitch in the system.

stephen_az says:

It sounds as if there is simply a problem with the ordering system.  If it really was giving some people shipping dates of before the product launch, that is a potentially big problem for stock tracking. It wouldn't be the first time they pulled an item down until they got their database straightened out.

VagrantWade says:

So...why did they pull it from my order history?

stephen_az says:

If the order doesn't exist because the system was not supposed to be live or because the database and/or system was not functioning correctly then there becomes no order for which to have an order history.  They didn't "pull it from your history" if it wasn't real.  People do stupid things with databases all the time - this just looks like a bit higher level of stupid.  Reality is if someone places an order into a dummy or unconnected system, or into a bad database, the end result can be that once they reboot the system the order simply goes away.

westex#WP says:

SInce you have a picture of an HTC 8x for this story, I gotta ask: Why did they only have Purple in stock for the 8X? What happened to all the other colors? Specifically Clifornia Blue.

kevin2577 says:

The "purple" is what HTC is calling California Blue

Coreldan says:

They did some odd color choices indeed. The blue looks like purple in half pics and the red looks like orange in half of the pics.

Rican_One says:

I did my pre order at Best Buy this morning. Gave me the gift card. Everything went well. They told me. We won't release them till fri 26. Even got the email confirmation for my pre order.

VagrantWade says:

Yes. I also have an order number and my email. But it was deleted. You might want to check it again.

jjmurphy says:

I just checked at 8:20 EST on Monday the 22nd.  My order still exists.  Mine was a pre-existing contract renewal. Maybe that has something to do with it.

zigzagr63 says:

No... Best Buy has the pre-order contract for AT&T.  I was on the phone with them earlier to see if I could pre-order one over the phone with them.  So if you do want to pre-order you have to go through Best Buy.  But like me my renewal date doesn't end until 11/11 so I couldn't pre-order through Best Buy any way but I can through AT&T.  Since they don't actually pre-order they did guarentee me a phone call on 11/5, since it is Monday, from them to order my phone and they will overnight it to me at no charge.  The rep did also say that it was indeed $149. Hope this helps everyone.

VagrantWade says:

That makes no sense. Carriers still usually do preorders the same day as anyone else, not later.

zigzagr63 says:

Yeah I know it doesn't make any sense but for some reason Best Buy has an agreement with AT&T to do all the pre-orders. AT&T themselves are doing no pre-orders for any WP8 device.  I think this is some kind of patting going on to help Best Buy out with their financial issues.  That's ok to an extent but still think it should be available through more than just them.

I hope LUMIA 920 isn't 200$ upgrade price that's alot for upgrade pricing

When I physically went to Best Buy this afternoon they told me it was available for preorder. I didn't even explicitly ask.

It went like...

Me: "I don't suppose you have demo units for the..."

Saleslady: "Lumia 920?"

Me: "Yes. I guess a lot of people have asked?"

Saleslady: "We don't have a unit, but we have it available for preorder. We've already had several people preorder and it just barely became available today. That's pretty good."

Benny1434 says:

Here's to hoping that the no commitment price is actually $550 (or less). $599 seems a bit pricy considering the $149 on contract price. I've never been a huge fan of Best Buy so I'll probably just wait till Amazon gets them next month, hopefully with a nice discount pre-applied.

riffraffy says:

Notice the "catagory" it is in now:

Best Buy  ›  Other Product Categories  ›  Exclusive Offers  ›  Product Info

.

Gigantuouse says:

I'm not sure what your point is.

dandrayan says:

That's what I did tonight around 6:30pm for my girlfriend. The order still exists and hasn't been cancelled like some others have been reporting.

Does anyone have a link for the red one? That's what I want for myself!

Coreldan says:

Does the AT&T version only have 8mpix camera or did they fail in the specs?

Jf.Vigor says:

Its like 8.7

Rican_One says:

Ok I'll check my email again. I really hope Best Buy didn't mess up.

VagrantWade says:

I just checked my order history. It is now displaying once more. Horaaaa!

beefydragon says:

It's a big screw up at BB.  That shouldn't have happened.  In addition, the specs on the Lumia 920 didn't mention anything in regards to PureView, OIC, Wireless Charging.  All were simply basic specs on all phones.

cwinger says:

Mines back again now although the shipping is back ordered again.

VagrantWade says:

Well obviously. The phone doesn't launch for two weeks.

anujtwp says:

All links are just hiddden. You can still preorder any coloured Lumia 920. Here's a common link. http://goo.gl/0rC5w

irlju#WP says:

This is a legit link, for anyone who's wondering. Nice work.

dandrayan says:

Thank you! I just pre-ordered the red one for myself!

jholl016 says:

Well, as of 8:00 AM Eastern, it looks like you can't preorder anymore.  The product pages still exist (thanks for the links BTW), but when you click "Add to Cart", nothing shows up in the cart.
Anyone else having better luck right now?

Edit: Also, I called them and the girl I spoke with said the 920 isn't showing up in her system this morning.

jholl016 says:

Just tried again at 10:45AM EDT and my preorder went through.  Looks like it's back up again now.

Arsenic17 says:

Well I am pretty sure it is obvious that they were not supposed to be able to be preordered today and that ATT found out and was angry. Come on people? You won't be getting your 920 this week. Before it is even revealed on Oct 29. I am guessing it was just a Best Buy glitch or them jumping the gun. Those that preordered will probably be refunded shortly and the real preordering date will be later week or next.

VagrantWade says:

No. They are legit. They even let you do it in store. The shipping date was just a placeholder. They update it after saying backordered 1-2 weeks.

VagrantWade says:

If you look at the weekly ad;

https://deals.bestbuy.com/#!/introducing+windows+8

They also state starting Sunday you could preorder.

Sunofabob says:

Very exciting...im awaiting the Samsung device. Would choose a colorful HTC but I prefer sd card support.

Gigantuouse says:

Yeah, they need to update the OP.

tkadrum says:

Wouldn't it be better to order the phone with contract, and then break the contract and pay the earty termination fee.  Here is my math.
Phone $149.99
2yr contract at $59/month(cheapest)
activation fee $36
earty termination " $325 minus $10 for each full month

$149.99 + $59(1st month) + $36 + $266($325-$10 full month) = 510.99(excluded tax)

The bottom price...After breaking of contract $510.99 vs out of contract $599.99+taxes=660(Washington state)

xirsteon says:

Good math. I may have to consider this w/ATT if the phone somehow work on tmob 3g at least. Otw, I'll lean towards ativ or 8x

I find no fault in the math, but why go through all the hassle and lose your number in the process? I'd rather pay the extra money to save my sanity.

jholl016 says:

I wouldn't think that you'd lose your number.  If you pay the ETF, you should be able to take your number with you, right?

lsmachado says:

Don't forget, at&t just changed their policy to 14 days.

jholl016 says:

Maybe I just don't understand how such things work, but how is it that $325 - $10 = $266?

jjmurphy says:

Yeah, the real number to pull that off is closer to $560.

jholl016 says:

This is all a moot point anyways if the phone is locked to AT&T.

JoeDizzle33 says:

You also have to Remember that if you break contract early you owe full price of phone as well. That $149 is based on fulfilling your contract. Once you break it you owe $599 or whatever full cost is plus AT&T probably won't give unlock code until exclusive deal is done.

WinFan1 says:

My order is still there weird

This is the same Gs3 pre order stuff I mentioned lol. I cancelled that one cause they where late getting it. Keeping this one, at least till at&t says go

fatmurphy says:

I ordered mine, got the confirmation email, and it said it would ship between 25th and 30th Oct.  Earlier this morning I checked Best Buy, and I didn't have any recent orders.  Just checked again, and it says that it is back ordered, usually ships between 1-2 weeks.  I'm thinking that some previous rumors are true, and Nokia is having issues getting these out.  I doubt they have sold out already, but then again, with the quick sell-out of the SurfaceRT, it could happen.

No, it was never set to launch before November in the first place. BB's confirmation email is just an error.

fatmurphy says:

@tkadrum - I think your belief that AT&T would even honor giving you that first month is a stretch, but even so, worst case, you still come out on top at $570.  So yes, in theory, this saves you money, but is a PITA.

I was one who got an email confirmation of 10/23-10/24, but when I check on the web site the order IS still in the system, my credit card HAS been billed (which kinda makes me mad, since companies aren't really allowed to bill until it's ready to ship), and it is listed as "Backordered 1-2 weeks" which coincides with the official launch, so I'm not gonna worry. As usual, people are overreacting to things. Just READ and pay attention to your accounts. If something seems "wrong" (like being billed but not seeing the order at all) then call BB about it. Simple, right?

jwckauman says:

I ordered mine AFTER it was removed from Best Buy's website using one of the provided URL's above.  It worked and it's still there. My order status says: 1 item(s) - Order in process of being fulfilled; Usually ships in 1 - 2 days.

jwckauman says:

Question: What is the Gift Card people are receiving from Best Buy?

ncxcstud says:

I know the giftcard I will get is due to the fact that Best Buy ran an upgrade deal in February.  If you signed up for it and upgraded your phone through Best Buy before Dec 31 they would give you a $50.00 gift card solely because you upgraded through them..

If you upgraded in the store you'd get a $50 gift card after your transaction, if you upgraded through bestbuy.com then they will e-mail you a gift card in a few days after your transaction.

leo74 says:

I placed my order for a red lumia 920 yesterday and got the confirmation email with a delivery date of 10/24 to 10/25. I found that date strange to begin with and after reading this article I checked my order status a few minutes ago. My order is still in the system but shows up with the backorder information and a shipping date of 1 to 2 weeks, which makes sense to me. Also my checking account was charged. So while I am sure that something with BB's ordering system went wrong (selling out all colors on day one would be strange and doesn't explain why you can still order via direct link), I expect that the order is valued and my phone will ship when available. If that should change, I will update...

switching says:

Time to buy NOK and why:

Signs of NOK´s stock price recovery:
NOK stock had already moved back and forth many times between 2 and 3 dollars even before this better-than-expected 3Q announced; Because the stock have been already shorted heavily, bears could not go any much further.
Huge volumes of shares exchanged during days of dips, meaning there are happy big buyers out there, for example Swiss National Bank announced it has become Nokia´s 5th biggest shareholder.
NOK´s average target price will rise soon, because after 3Q results, Societe Generale, SEB, Kepler, Carnergie, Credit Suisse, BZ, RBC, Canaccord, Scotiabank, Baird, Northlands Securities, Wedbush Securities and so on have raised Nokia´s target price. Also Nordea has rated NOK from "buy" to "strong buy", Carnegie from "hold" to "buy" and so on.
There were still a couple of bears even lowered NOK´s target price after better-than-expected 3Q, for example Exane. Bernstein remains Underperform rating and 1.56 dollar target. On the other hand, as you know, these might have been the biggest NOK bears out there.

Important reasons:

1. Now when the DOWS and S&P have almost hit all time highs, investors start to think more about cheap and potential value stocks. NOK is now only about 0,8x book value, and usually NYSE stocks are on an average about 2x book value (Apple 7x book value). Therefore, I think NOK is cheap enough for its values. Another reason is NOK has been already shorted massively about 16% of its total shares.

2. Nokia has not lost about 1 billion dollars a quarter like the media says, because Nokia has 5 business parts and 4 of them are profitable. Therefore, the exact number is much much smaller.

3. Nokia´s loss is only 17 million euros any more (compared to Reuters´s consensus 277 million and Nokia´s last two previous quarters about 290 million each), this was much better.

4. Nokia Siemens Networks is doing very strongly (over 300 million euros profit in 3Q. More business to come in the future: 3G in developing countries, 4G in developed and emerging countries)

5. NAVTEQ was also profitable, but NAVTEQ´s number will be better in 4Q, because of the deals with Amazon, Yahoo, Oracle and many car-companies.

6. Nokia´s feature-phone division is doing well, because of Asha phones.

7. Nokia´s patent portfolio earns about 500 million euros a year, and the number is still increasing.

8. Nokia has cut expenses (which saves about 1 billion euros a year) and in the future Nokia does not have to spend so much in R&D either, because it has teamed up with Microsoft.

Here are Nokia´s 3Q numbers:

Eps: -0,07 euro (better than consensus -0,11 euro)

Total loss: only 17 million euros (much better than consensus 277 million euros, and last quarter loss 290 million euros)

Net cash: 3,6 billion euros (reconstructings such as closing factory in Romania and building new plant in Vietnam and so on, also because this net cash number was at the end of September, therefore some deal-payments not included).
The net cash is also better than consensus which was 3,36 billion euros (average of 35 analysts at Reuters).

Important to note: in 3Q, NSN made 323 million euros profit.

Also NAVTEQ was profitable, but NAVTEQ´s number will be better in 4Q because of the new deals like Oracle and many car-companies.

Guidance from CEO Stephen Elop: trying to turn Devices & Services division profitable soon, and next year will be the year for good fight against rivals.

Good news for 4Q:

China Mobile confirmed Lumia 920T, may arrive in November.
Product-launch invitations in Russia for November 6 (Lumia 920, Lumia 820).
AT&T Lumia 920´s exclusivity only 6 months (possibly available on other US carriers 2Q 2013).
Lumia 920 sold out in preorders in Italy.
Lumia 920 tops iPhone 5 in Phonehouse France.
Lumia 920 tops charts at Expansys UK and Expansys France.
Lumia 920 black available November 5 in UK.
Lumia 920 available November 15 in Germany.
Lumia 920 is already on preorders also in many other countries (Canada, Australia, Norway etc. meaning it will surely make for the holiday shopping season this year).
Lumia 800s and Lumia 900s are making the ecosystem growing fast, because the offer-campaigns just started and they are selling well. And to improve net cash, Nokia´s HQ might be cashed in the near future (Nokia will continue dispose of non-core assets).

And here are the reasons why bankruptcy is hardly true:

1. Nokia does not only make phones.

2. Nokia´s feature-phone division is still profitable.

3. Nokia Lumia 920 scores the best points among most of the tech sites today when comparing high end smart phones.
(Lumia 920 beats iPhone 5 and Galaxy S III with these features:
Floating-lens PureView camera with optical image stabilization
Wireless charging
Super sensitive and bright screen that can be used with gloves or finger nails
Premium GPS that can be used offline
Augmented reality City Lens
Free music with no advertisements
Lumia 920 also beats iPhone 5 with NFC)
The Verge and Engadget have proven the power and quality of the camera accurate as Nokia claimed (by comparing the Lumia 920´s camera side by side with other high end smart phones, such as iPhone 5 and Galaxy S III).

4. Lumia 920 and 820 hit in time the holiday shopping season this year.

5. NSN is growing strongly.

6. Nokia´s WP 8 devices will hit more markets, for example the middle East countries (Lumia phones have not been in these countries yet till now).

7. NAVTEQ is doing well and even better in the future

8. Nokia still has 3,6 billion euros net cash

9. Nokia has regular incomes from its patent portfolio (right now, this income is around 500 million euros per year, and it is still increasing).

10. Nokia has cut expenses (which saves about 1 billion euros per year).

11. In the future, Nokia does not have to spend so much in R&D, because it has teamed up with Microsoft.

12. If Nokia really runs out of cash, Microsoft will likely lend Nokia
cash for reasonable rates, because Nokia is the most important partner for Microsoft for its Window Phone ecosystem and phone software business in general. Microsoft won´t let Nokia go bankrupt, cause it would be a huge damage for itself as well.

13. Apart from Vertu and so on, Nokia still can sell its patents, since it still has about 30 000 patents in its own hands (in case Nokia needs more cash).

14. If the stock price still goes cheaper and cheaper, one day some rival would bid for Nokia, just for its patents ( Motorola was acquired by Google with 12 billion dollars, this is good to remind people who underestimate intellectual properties´ value).

15. Microsoft will bid for Nokia with higher premium if some company really bids for Nokia, because Nokia is in so close partnership with Microsoft that this also includes business strategies, business secrets and so on. Therefore, Microsoft won´t let any company acquire Nokia than itself. When it comes to Microsoft, it is still the net cash king in the world, after all its debts excluded, it still has a huge net cash about 50 billion dollars.

16. Right now, there is no way to compare Nokia to Apple among most smart phone consumers, but there is hope in the future.
For example, Nokia just signed the contract with China Mobile (who has about 680 million subscribers, which is about 70% of all subscribers in this world´s biggest nation), and even though iPhone is very popular in the US and Europe, Windows Phone OS already surpasses iOS in the world´s biggest countries beside China, such as Brasil, India and Russia. Even though in these countries more low price point phones are sold, but these are the most important emerging giants in the world where Nokia´s position and brand are still quite strong. And it may be sooner than we think when more people in these countries are able to afford high end smart phones.

17. Nokia has not lost about 1 billion dollars a quarter as the media says, because its other parts of business are profitable (while 1Q´s and 2Q´s total loss 290 million each, 3Q´s total loss only 17 million euros any more). Therefore, 3.6 billion euros net cash should be enough for Nokia´s transition period before WP8 phones take off. There is still enough room for a third ecosystem in this world, beside emerging markets Europe has adopted WP phones in a very encouraging way (for example Italy has already over 10% market share for WP phones, considering the Lumia debut has not been a year yet, since last November only. WP OS has already grown a lot faster compared to iOS and Android in their first quarters).

18. If Microsoft really “betrays” Nokia and competes in hardware with Nokia. Nokia will take a plan B as well, for example Nokia will likely make both WP phones and Android phones at the same time.
Nokia´s board and Nokia´s biggest shareholders won´t let the company die without this last fight (if needed).

The conclusion is Nokia is for long-term and medium-term play not for short term. Just think about this, even when Apple and Google reach 1000 dollars, that is not even doubling, but in long term Nokia has the opportunity to triple or even more.

I know US is very important market, because Wall Street and US consumer trend give directions to market momentum around the world, still you can not neglect the power of BRIC and MIST these days.
You can calculate yourself how many people living in these 8 BRIC- and MIST-countries. In these countries, in Brazil, Russia, India, China, Mexico, Indonesia and Turkey, Nokia´s position and brand are still quite strong (except South-Korea, but you know it is Samsung´s home-country and the smallest country among those important 8 anyway). caleb23
Nokia stock is listed in Helsinki and New York.

jholl016 says:

This would have been better off in the forums, as it has nothing to do with the article.

With that said, I completely agree.  I've been buying NOK like crazy recently.

sRc#WP says:

as of now the order system seems to be working again, all my orders are showing in my account now, including my 920 order being back now showing the status "Order In Process" and "1 item(s) backordered.Usually ships in 1 - 2 weeks."

chadwick611 says:

I just don't see it on the web site

zephjc says:

I really want to pre-order a 920 now, but I'm waiting til I can try it in a store.

Sukina says:

Just pre-orded a red 920 for my ATT upgrade. Order Status says Order in process of being fulfilled; Usually ships in 1 - 2 days. Estimated delivery 10/24-10/25
Hooray! Can't wait to get my hands on it.

Sukina says:

Status changed to Back ordered too, Ship in 1-2 weeks :(
Paid $1.99 for expedite too.
Bestbuy already charged me $162.62, can't cancel either.

gudnuf4u says:

order a Cyan for my wife, I'll wait for a deal later in the month to get myself a yellow...I checked my credit card and Best Buy already charged me the $190 for the phone....my status says Processing and I paid the $1.99 to get it by Oct 25th ...if I don't see a shipped by Wednesday I'm going to call and cancel

zigzagr63 says:

You just as well cancel then.  They can't ship it to you that soon because the phone isn't released until the 4th.  That is an error in their system.  Now they should refund your $1.99 because that shouldn't have even been and option.

troyfrezze says:

Yea, I still haven't been able to preorder mine. This morning it gave me a messaged about my cart and deleted itself, but I was able to re-add it. Check out is still a problem though and I get an error code when I hit submit. This morning I called and was told they were having problems with the preorder and to try back this afternoon. I just tried again and still no joy. Got on with the chat and was told they were having problems with the site a it had been turned over to a site designer for troubleshooting, but they haven't heard anything back yet. So I don't know if anyone's still able to preorder, but I haven't been able to since yesterday at this time.

Sukina says:

That's odd. I was able to pre-order the red 920 at 11am this morning. No hiccups, very fast order confirmation too.

wpeight says:

It's sold out. Love it. Can't wait to see many people now see power of windows phone. Tired seeing crappy iphone or buggy android

WPenvy says:

Why is the 8X in the picture?...lol

troyfrezze says:

So my wife just tried to preorder from the local store for me, but was told they can't. The rep informed her they can't do anything because the entire system is jacked up and it's not just affecting the Nokia, but all sales. The manager overheard and stated he was upset as well because they were losing business. They have no idea what's actually to blame, and corporate isn't giving them an ETA on getting it fixed, but for now they are pretty much dead in the water and have been since yesterday when we went by then to see about preordering.

tlegend2012 says:

do we know if the nokia 920 has a notification light?

Relden says:

If you go to one of the direct links they all say "Sold Out Online". Unless that is code word for "we are having problems with pre-orders", I'd say Nokia is proving much more popular than anticipated, and the shop was not prepared for the response it received!
Or Best Buy only had like 100 available...
