Apps
As you all know by now, the Skype beta for Windows Phone is now out in the Marketplace. We just gave Rafael a call and was happily shocked at how good it sounded.
The app is pretty simple with your contacts and history and barely any user settings. You can make voice calls, chat or even video calls as expected and all calls are free over WiFi. In addition you can use the dialpad to call out any numbers should you have Skype out minutes.
Though long in the waiting, it looks to be a solid release even if it still has the "beta" label. Pick up Skype here in the Marketplace for free.

Is that the titan
Yes, unlocked version.
Now thats what I was waiting for.
WP already has great features. I personally use my phone (Blackberry) for Turn by Turn Navigation, Web Browsing, Messaging, Emails, and music. I was looking into video calling for years now, but never really liked iPhone or Android devices, because FOR ME they are not as efficient or productive as my Blackberry. Overall it just takes more time to do a lot of things on those phones. I was looking into WP. Skype is that major feature that I was missing on WP devices, and its development is just reassuring for me that WP is a great choice for me.
I love the simple and beautiful UI. I will wait until the Nokia Lumia 900 comes out, and just buy it off contract for $500 or so. Done deal.
Thanks to the Skype team for developing this, and Microsoft for implementing it. (Microsoft owns Skype actually, doesn't it. Well, whoever is responsible, good job.)
do we have to tap into one contact to see whether they're online or not?
Nope. You can see filtered lists. For example see only the online contacts.
Daniel, is there a reason you use QR Codes instead of the MS Tags supported on all Windows Phones?
Yes please for the love of all things holy get that QR crap out of this site. Same goes for the darn Google+ next to your name.
QR: please don't remove it.. Google plus, I don't really care..
Agree, QR codes are great, Please leave them alone.
No don't remove QR codes, i use them with Bing Vision constantly. Used it to find Skype earlier.
Doesn't matter if you use the app and it's marketplace link functionality ;)
I think MS tags are prettier =p
did anyone manage to add a skype contact? cannot find an option to add sbdy :-/
I can't find it either :(
also the "edit profile" button taking you to skype.com is a bit cheap :P
It is said that this app is in beta. I think what's more important at the moment is the actual video calls and voice calls. I think they want to see how it pans out. The final bits will be release later in April. Just keep in that mind guys, thank you! Happy Skyping lol
How come I can't find the app when searching the marketplace, but can download it using the link from this post?
Same thing here. Was able to download through your link but was not able to find it in marketplace
account data and skype credits aren't updated when changed. when app is launched it often stats "not connected" and changes to online then. is it online in the background or is it not? hummm...
useless app, when I must run it to be online.. Nobody could call me and I could not call other WP skype users before start app.. no background agent, no push notification.. :-/
I wished people would put mind into what they before hitting the submit button. It's a damn beta! It's for all of us to play with while they work on it. Be happy we even have that!
People its a beta! Now that it's on the wild, your comments will help them fix the bugs for the next update.
Beta or not, I wouldn't call not being able to add a contact and notifications/running the background as bugs. I call it laziness. Adding a contact I can deal with but not running in the background just about renders this useless.
Here's to hoping it's updated rather soon with some of these basic features.
Relax, you ain't gonna die if you can't Skype.
let's say it should be alpha :-P
btw: the suggestion button also does not work ;-)
Having problem with internal speaker on HTC Trophy. Speaker works fine.
I know it's a beta, but I expected more from MS with software they now own on a platform they need to succeed. No video, had to add a + to the phone number of all my contacts so they would show up, only mobile number shows up, no push, I could go on. I really love windows phone, but this was half-assed, plain and simple.
I hate Skype. Lol. What contact do u have?
It says "skype beta" for a reason... im sure most, if not all, of these problems will be corrected in an update soon enough. So people chill
Somebody call me on this Skype **** Andre.bond72 im a male married and not gay. Just testing
Maybe I should have taken the offer to go interview for a job developing this app...
No voicemail support = fail
Video call works on the omnia7 can transmit but not recieve.
Semi works should I say..
BETA IST OBVIOUS YEAH YEAH I KNOW... be happy *-*
Only landscape support, and can't switch to the rear camera like Tango, but the video quality seemed a lot better.
No background support is really a killer here... cuts about 50% of the usefulness that I was expecting. Basically, only good for outgoing Skypes.
Also, it's very dissapointing that any navigation away from the app seems to kill the call (or at least pause it).
I know this is a beta, but I suspect if major features like these are not in it (even in buggy form) they will not be in the final. Looks like we will have to wait for the os integrated version for the real deal. Too bad that will probably be around 2015 if the wait on the app is any indication.
Technically, it works pretty well in my opinion. Callers said my outgoing quality was great. Incoming sound seemed a bit "echoey". Was a nice surprise to be able to use the rear camera on my Trophy... at least I will be able to send video to my wife of our baby when she's away.
I was just really hoping for more, especially after all the delays. But 50% is better than 0%!
Oh, one more thing that seems liek a bug... when video chatting with my wife's Android phone her video shows up upside down... I have to hold the phone with the Windows buttons at the top to see her correctly.
Or do we have to hold the phone sideways? Seems liek it should be able to figure out what the orientation of the incoming video should be and compensate for how you're holding your phone?
I cannot gind skype in da marketplace plzz hlp
