Raise AT&T upload speed on Samsung Focus [How To]

Filed under:

If you have experienced your upload speed being restricted on AT&T, which can occur after you've (finally) updated with official NoDo, there are some simple steps you can take to increase speed:

  • From the number-dial screen:
  • Enter ##634#
  • Diagnostics screen should open.
  • Enter *#32489#
  • Test mode screen should open.
  • Press back at the bottom (bottom right, not the phone's back button)
  • Press 5 for RRC (HSPA) control
  • Press 1 to view what yours is set at (Kyle's was Release 5 HSDPA only)
  • Press 2 to change it.
  • Press 3 to change to Release 6 HSDPA/HSUPA
  • Press [end] to confirm.

This will install a Diagnostics app on your device (that will be displayed on the installed app list), we are not currently aware if uninstalling the app will cause issues with the diagnostics tool itself. And if you need to know your speeds, there's an app for that: Bandwidth 2.x in the Marketplace. Hit us up in comments and let us know if this worked for you, we're still experimenting ourselves.

Thanks Kyle for the steps!

The directions definitely worked - the improved speeds - to be determined! Thanks for the post.

so... which would be the proper download and upload speeds for our AT&T 3G Samsung Focus???

Is this particular speed cap happening to everyone who updates to NoDo or just a few?

More like, most of AT&T's phones. Is this possible on Android phones? It seems like the Smart phone Experts got a bomb dig lead here.By the way, I changed it. I'm not sure the bandwidth app before I changed it. But it seems like common sense that having HSUPA activated makes complete sense, unless it behaves completely opposite of what it's supposed to. After all...all of AT&T's 4G phones were gimped to not include HSUPA.

my phone's internet is slower after nodo! whyyyyy..... which is the official fix?

Anyone know why AT&T did this? Us new contracts only have a 2GB cap, so I don't get why there'd be throttling. Do you think it's to help with battery life?

I have not updated my Samsung Focus yet and still have the Release 5 HSDPA only setting. I would say this setting is not specific to the update.

This isn't working for me. Once I get to the part where I get the diagnostics screen to load, I hit the back button at the bottom right and it takes me right back to the dialer. I have no option to press 5 to view the RRC control. Anyone else??

you tap the back buttoln not on the dialer but the back box in the lower right follow the instructions as written and it will get you to the place to check R6 for bnoth HSUPA and HSDPA

Before the settings change the best download/upload speeds were 13.57mbps down and 1.10mbps up. After the tweak, the best I registered was 40.71Mbps down and 1.22Mbps up. Nevermind... these are numbers off Wifi.

LOL, I was about to say WTF, you have a WP7 5G phone.

lol that's what i thought, this guy is on 6G network

It did not work for me either. I have v5 and when I get to press 3, it just adds 3 to the end of this number: current command is 1835123!!

read the directions and follow them exactly you should to a screen that gives you choices and select 3 which states HSUPA/HSDPA which is R6.

When you pressed 1 to view the current setting, you need to press BACK (the text button within the app, not the Windows Back button on the device), then press 2 to edit the setting, and press 3 to change the value. The directions do not call this out.

Prior to installing Diagnostics app-----------------------------------Download speed: .21 MbpsUpload speed: .13 MbpsLatency: 18msAfter installing Diagnostics app--------------------------------Download speed: .37 MbpsUpload speed: .15 MbpsLatency: 847msI don't know whether it's my phone, the network, or the BandWith app but I've been trying to run this test for a while now and keep getting errors or only half of the test done. So while the post-Diagnostics numbers are only slightly better, I'm not sure how accurate they are. The real test is if I'll notice any difference.

It has been my experience (pre NoDo) that uninstalling the app does not affect the settings from what I have seen. As a matter of fact if you call AT&T to determine how to get the MAC address of the phone, they walk you through installing the diagnostic app, then have you uninstall it at the end of the support session.Eric

I'm still wondering if using this method is absolutely necessary. Is there a significant speed increase afterwards?

I am wary of anything involving the diagnostic tool. I did the volume 'hack' (for lack of a better term) where you entered a code and messed with the volume settings. As advertised, the headphone volume was louder. However, unplugging the cable from the audio jack OR receiving a phone call would raise the phone's internal speaker volume to be insanely loud. You would have to reboot the phone in order to get the volume back to normal. I ended up having to reset the phone to fix the issue as changing the settings back to stock in the diagnostic tool would not fix it.

I didn't check my speed before the change, but using various locations with the large setting, I'm seeing 5-6+Mbps download, and about .7Mbps upload speeds.I didn't seem to have any problems following the given directions...

I just got my phone (samsung focus) bought it yesterday installed pre-nodo,then no-do when I get here I get a "menu does not exist" when I go to press 2 to change it.Guess Att wised up and maybe had that taken out w/nodo?Press 1 to view what yours is set at (Kyle's was Release 5 HSDPA only)Press 2 to change it.Press 3 to change to Release 6 HSDPA/HSUPAPress [end] to confirm.
