The recent Windows Phone Marketplace blitz summarized

There's no doubt that if you've been to our site over the last few days you've seen how Microsoft has flooded the Marketplace with some big name apps along with the conveniently timed Mango preview and Angry Birds for Xbox LIVE.

While we're used to having a few "official" apps every week added, the last 14 days has been a whirlwind, so much so that we wanted to tally it all up. From our count, Microsoft has gained some 51 big titles or apps in the last two weeks. That number we're prepared to revise in case we missed some--something that's easy to do. It's also worth noting that we've hit 25,000+ apps in the Marketplace--a number reached in just 8 months of effort.

This strategy by Microsoft was brilliant in many ways, getting our attention along with the media's in general as they were fixated on "Mango" (also, we're sure devs are quite happy this week too). The question we have is: How long will this flood last? In all likelihood, things will wind down this weekend. On the other hand, perhaps this is sustained effort. Needless to say, we'll be keeping our eyes open. One thing is for certain though: Microsoft is playing for keeps here and they are certainly courting all the big companies for apps, making sure customers have all the options available to them on the Windows Phone platform.

So to recap, join us after the break and see the big ol' list of who recently made it to the Windows Phone 7 party. Did we miss something? Shout out in comments and we'll add it!

Bravo Microsoft, bravo.

This week has been amazing thats for sure. One has to wonder though is MS concentrating as usual on mostly US apps. All of the newspapers are US in that list.Amazon is US only (I think the British use Amazon?)Its great they are pushing the platform but as a British Windows phone user I feel that to start with some features of the phone are not available unless your in the US and this continued concentration of focus on US apps is annoying. Have Microsoft soured their relationship with the BBC or something? There is no official news app, no offical weather app & certainly no iplayer app from the BBC and I would love to know why. Also the UK market is missing allot of apps from big companies, Waitrose, Ocado, Asda, Argos & media isnt well served either, The Guardian, The Times, official apps from Sky, Virgin Media.I love my Windows Phone but feel like even MS treat their own platform as an also-ran with brilliant apps for iphone/ipad but leaving WP7 to fester with once a year updates...hmm..not good. But we get British Airways which is a good start, its clear MS need to get some of their teams working with local companies in other countries to get this stuff happening.

I totally agree with your post, living in the UK myself. I think things will come gradually for all European countries. Sky Italy and Alitalia released an app this week for instance.I'm French so I keep an eye on the French apps and all these came up this week:- France 24- L'Equipe- i>tele- Larousse- Tele 7- Telerama- Voyages-SNCF- MarmitonAnd I already had about 4-5 official French apps. We can wish for a week where UK apps will be numerous.

Two things:1. I really wish the Marketplace had a app category for ONLY "official" apps. That way users could look at what mainstream companies have recently come onboard WP7, without having to shuffle through the weeds of junk apps.2. Anybody wanna chime in on some "official" apps that they would most like to see next? Or what "official" apps do you know of on other platforms are hot or useful enough that we WP7 users need!

You forgot Photofunia, Alitalia, ESRB (and the EU counterpart PEGI). Also WeightWatchers relesed 3 apps so you need 2 more links.

Updated, thanks. (Can only find one official WW's app).

So good, the only thing missing is Pandora. Not because I want to use it but everytime somebody sees my phone they ask. Does it have Pandora? And I have to saw no...and a piece of my soul goes to "heck".

Hi,Not sure when it released but I just found and immediately downloaded Glympse.Glympse was one of my favourite apps on Windows Mobile, and that I desperately missed since moving to WP7.Until now.

Cool. Yeah, I need to do something on that app, it's really nice.

two more for you:livestrong.com - A fantastic calorie/fitness tracker. According to their website, it's $2.99 for blackberry and ios. Not listed on the website yet, but it's FREE on WP7 marketplace. Also, no mention of an android app...TripIt Travel Organizer - The one published by Concur Technologies in the real one... Also free.
