Reminder: gMaps Pro free on Friday

gMaps Pro for Windows Phone

While gMaps Pro vanished from the Marketplace a few weeks ago, it's back but with a slight snag. After dealing with copyright issues and re-branding/updating things, the app was restored to the Windows Phone Marketplace as a new submission. This basically means that if you had previously purchased gMaps Pro, you won't be eligible for any future updates without re-purchasing the app.

To ease the pain of the situation and to celebrate the Marketplace reaching 100,000 apps Alexey Strakh, gMaps Pro's developer, will be offering gMaps Pro (regularly $1.99) as a free app for tomorrow (Friday, June 8th) only.

We have to tip our hat to Alexey for trying to make the best of a not-so-good situation. For those who purchased gMaps Pro before it was removed, nows your chance to get the current version.  This will enable you to stay current with all the updates as they become available without the need to re-purchase the app. Everyone else... you get a heck of a deal on a nice mapping app.

You can find gMaps Pro here at the Windows Phone Marketplace. We aren't sure when the pricing change will kick in so if you don't see it right away on Friday, check back later.

I don't know if this has been pointed out yet, but since I have access to Microsoft ExpertZone I thought I should point this out; as currently they are running a sweepstake on when the WP7 Marketplace will hit 100,000 apps and everyone has said June 5th so this is their response:
[Please note: Some of you have mentioned a June 5 blog post saying we've already hit 100,000 apps. However, this number includes apps that are no longer available. Microsoft's official count includes only those apps available today, and that's the count we'll use to judge this contest. As of June 5, that count was around 92,000.]

ZuNuKoo says:

So people shut up now.. No more comments! ITS FREE NOW, in US.

DRENTECH says:

Isn't this app using Google? Ehhh!

Soxpranos says:

Nokia maps is excellent , no need for google maps

schlubadub says:

ONLY if you have a Nokia phone or if you are fine with the limited functionality of Bing Maps.

Who needs this when the built in functionality is just as good if not better? Oh well at least it'll be free.

schlubadub says:

Because the built-in maps don't have even half of the features!

venetasoft says:

Don't think so

schlubadub says:

Yes, well I know so :P

schlubadub says:

Features that gMaps has that the Bing Maps doesn't:
Cycling directions, Public Transport directions, Terrain view, Hybrid view, Water overlay view, Public Transport map overlay, Traffic overlay, Weather overlay, Cycling Paths overlay, Compass overlay, Google Latitude

I believe Traffic and possibly Public Transport is available in the US on Bing Maps.

Who cares about even half that stuff

schlubadub says:

A huge amount of people!

schlubadub says:

To clarify I use:
Cycling directions, Cycling Paths overlay, Public Transport directions, Public Transport map overlay, Traffic overlay, Compass overlay

I don't use:

Terrain view, Hybrid view, Water overlay view, Weather overlay, Google Latitude

Strangis says:

Some of those features, such as Traffic and Hybrid, are in the built in maps, and not just in the US.  The more detailed traffic actually started showing up on my maps the day they announced it.

schlubadub says:

What country are you in? I've only heard of US & Canada getting those extra features. No changes for me in Australia. Not surprising as we still don't have all the Bing Vision features unlocked.

dandmcd says:

Not in China yet, I still only have major highways and nothing else on my built-in maps.

Dave Blake says:

I have absolutely no use for gmaps but I am addicted to downloading the free stuff

procen says:

LOL! Free stuff sound good to me.

agm353 says:

Free stuff - yay!

Lukas#WP says:

Haha :):):)

Lx23 says:

Stop the hate and use the thing if you want. If you don't want, don't hate unnecessarily. I'm sure most of you use google maps on your PCs.

Bruno H says:

Nope, Bing maps and Nokia maps for me.

drunkard says:

No, actually, I have not used any google services in years, and why should I?

Nakazul says:

No, don't use any Google product. But there sure are a lot who do.

willied says:

What does this have that Bing Maps doesn't? I'm just wondering.

irlju#WP says:

StreetView.

moneyisall91 says:

in other countries, Bing Maps isn't as good as google maps. you can only see national road, i.e. vietnam ... =.=

pulkit10 says:

Bing and Bing maps are not as great as Google's offering in Canada. I use both (Bing on WP7 mainly and Google on the PC) but Bing just hasn't lived up to the standard. The search is just not that great for me personally and the maps are a little behind Google's offering. That's not to say that they are bad, it's just that they don't work as well as Google's.

zacman says:

Places. Bing and Nokia maps maybe only have about 10% of the poi that google maps has. It's very annoying if u search for a poi in Europe and Bing immediately jumps to north America....

schlubadub says:

Public transport, traffic, weather, street view, google latitude, bike paths and directions etc. (Some US & Canadian peeps may have Traffic)

TechAbstract says:

Bing has traffic and some street view.

anurag.m says:

Its not free as yet..!

black_lion says:

Because it's going to be free Friday....

schlubadub says:

For me it's over half way through Friday (2pm) and still not free. It's difficult having a 1 day sale due to different timezones and the amount of time it takes to propagate price changes.

greg2k says:

It's nearly 3PM in Europe and I'm pretty sure it's Friday all over the world at this point...still 2€

thaman04 says:

Quick question - does anyone know if this app has Transit directions?
That's the only thing Google Maps has in Canada that Bing Maps doesn't have.

schlubadub says:

Yep! Well it does for me in Australia, and not in Bing Maps

alukard says:

I use Bing maps actually, ever since I started with windows phone.

but free is free, and its bragging rights to say one has gmaps on their wp as well.

I use Bing maps all the time when I need to find where I'm working next and it works great. But free is free and most of us can't help it=)

yeungl says:

Bing map is good, but the app black out after a period of idling. Annoying!

Apalis says:

Bing maps are garbage no matter what the M$ fanboys might tell you. Some of you are simply pathetic, hating Google for no particular reason. WP7 is good but it could defintely use good apps and services to make it better.

Don't troll... Idiot

VikArmo says:

Anyone who puts a $ sign in MS or any other company is the ignorant pathetic idiot. Grow up.

Apalis says:

Yeah, I am a troll, is that why I am using a Samsung Focus posting on a Windows Phone forum ? So anybody disagreeing with you is automatically considered a troll ?

It's the way you deliver your msg that annoys me. I use a lot of googleservices and appreciate them.

Crap... Paid for it yesterday

Its Friday and its NOT free yet!!

venetasoft says:

I m still asking why gmaps changed his appid and not simply the name, if there really were google copyrights problems...
If u change the appid, users have to rebuy the app, as happened !! In my opinion google did not asked anything, it simply was a the developer publishing mistake (I hope...), he now wants to compensate this error setting his app free.
Hope the author can explain here ;)

schlubadub says:

It's already been explained in the WPC article that came out few days ago, and you can find further details on the developer blog... It's actually MS fault and not his. They deleted his app due to the copyright complaint and he had to resubmit it as a new app.

RyanDaLyon says:

Its not free :( lol

mottyboy says:

Still not free in uk

Hampus says:

Just for capitalization's sake. It's "Now's". Just sayin'.

schlubadub says:

You wouldn't capitalise after a comma... But it was missing the apostrophe

truffle1234 says:

Still not free in Singapore...

namodenamer says:

Still not free in Malaysia

Apalis says:

We have been had, it is still not free yet, wtf ? Hoax for free advertisement ?

percistratus says:

Not free yet in Malawi, & this is about noon.

scanie says:

Still not free in Sweden either.

meddyrainzo says:

Every time I try to check directions, it takes me to the google browser page...help

KumarNix says:

Almost end of Friday here O_O

jabtano says:

6:00am New England time the app is still not free. None the less the app looks very good.

Apalis says:

Yeah, direction doesnt work over here too... Still not free, trying the trial version.

stayfool says:

Not free in USA yet!

shamelin73 says:

just checked and seems to not be free

jabtano says:

7:00am New England time...still not free

shirleyboy says:

Still not free in uk@12.05

skooal says:

Not free yet in Ireland.

KumarNix says:

Can the developer directly make these changes ? Like whether or not the app has to be free , and changes reflect in marketplace right away ?
or
He has to submit the changes to MS and it takes some time to be effective?

If the case is former , WAKE UP DUDE !!

noor2122 says:

Not yet free in INDIA to............

dortyboy says:

Not yet free in NYC lol. I don't really need it now since I have Nokia maps but I did pay for it the first time around and I need some sort of compensation

Apalis says:

Not free yet, what is taking you sooooo long ?

noor2122 says:

Please inform me when it will available...

Miistercoool says:

Still waiting...not free yet grrrr (NYC)

Localhorst86 says:

Thank you all for telling us every 10 minutes or so that the app is not yet free -_-
Price changes have to propagate to all markets and may take a while. Depending on Microsofts mood, this can happen in the course of a few hours or a few days. In the case of the luqid daffodil freebie a few days back, it took MS almost 48hours to propagate the price changes.
So: Patience is A Virtue

wptom says:

That's all nice and dandy, however the freebie period is 24 hours here if I read it correctly. Do you see the problem already or do you need a clue bat?

Localhorst86 says:

Price changes need time to propagate both ways, so... Yeah give me that clue bat so I can hit people.

Would those "people" include you too? :-) but yes, I do see both sides! And btw......its still not free where I am! stayed tuned for more updates in 10 minutes...

jazeelkk says:

Still not free...

noor2122 says:

Guys plz update in this thread...

devchimp says:

Man...people need to learn PATIENCE

truffle1234 says:

But it says free only on Friday....

schlubadub says:

For me it will be Saturday in 4 hours... hopefully the change from free (whenever it comes through) back to paid will also take some time.

mottyboy says:

Its free now......
No just kidding lol still not free :)

U should be shot! :-P

Apoc says:

Not free yet here in the usa

TunisianBoy says:

Not free in Tunisia and it's 13:26 !!!! The day will be soon over lol

Still not free here in Indiana in the USA

walter1832 says:

USA is a free country, but the app isn't!

jedijaxpavan says:

Bazinga.
Seriously, its not free yet on central time

U_D says:

Does gMaps Pro integrate with the calendar and offer me a "Get directions in gMaps Pro" or does it give me directions to my next appointment, or what is it that a mapping app needs access to my appointments for?

1101x10 says:

I'm suprised no one has mentioned it's no free yet.

Localhorst86 says:

can you check again?

Omg! What! Its not free?

party7uk says:

Still not free in UK.
Has anyone already mentioned that. ;)

poxme says:

Still not free in Philippines...Bing/nokia maps here in my city sucks, street name and layers are all messed up, so I prefer google for this matter

fraincs says:

I think no one mentionned it was not free in Canada, had to sayt it :D

Ba2Py says:

not free in spain also xD

Edosbeats_HD says:

Not free in the US ...

splash112 says:

Almost 14.30 in the UK and the app is still listed as £1.49

irlju#WP says:

11:28pm here :]

truffle1234 says:

My Nokia drive works better then garmain nuvi.. But if I get the gmap pro free I will be able to use it in Japan in 2 weeks time.

dasarp says:

When does this become free again?

reelon says:

It's 9:36 and it's not free yet :-P

zacman says:

I don't know what is more ridiculous. The people posting here that it isn't free yet. Or those people actually rating it with one star because it is not free yet...

Localhorst86 says:

I would imagine it's the same people, really. So they are being ridiculous twice. If I were a developer, I would think twice about doing something like this again. People are forgetting that he is giving away his paid app for free and now seem to think it is their right to have it...

You mean the people who dont ALREADY have it need to remember this - the ones that do and would otherwise have to buy it AGAIN don't! Its the least he can do - im not paying him twice! Have u seen the gas prices in California?

Ba2Py says:

light up grumpy old zacman, its friday

Localhorst86 says:

so, "It's friday" is now an excuse for acting like an idiot?

Ba2Py says:

i'm reporting that is not free on my country. Is that acting like an idiot to you? If so, well, we have different points of view =).

Localhorst86 says:

this, and giving the app a 1 star review on the marketplace because it's not free...

Ba2Py says:

i give you that one, that is indeed stupid ^^

Peter McCain says:

MS deserves the 1 star rating.. the way they run the market is sad. They come late to the game and they cant even do it right.. How can a developer run promotions like this. BS!

Hey - marketing/advertising is part of the product and who says that the star sysyem is to be used strictly for rating the level of performance satisfaction? Why wouldn't it include the WHOLE PACKAGE from advertising to performance?

Reporting from an all new country where it's not free yet... Cyprus !:D

Girls, girls, stop fighting...

mangoose says:

YOU NEVER BREAK UP A GIRL FIGHT! EVER!

rajstruck says:

You sir, made my day. :)

tranthe says:

Still not free in Vietnam.

chadwick611 says:

O no only like 19 hours left in the day, what shall I do

schlubadub says:

1.5 for me :P

Sit and stare at WP Central until u read someone type that it IS free! Just a thought ;-)

Sarang68 says:

4½ hours in India.

Now this is a pointless debate...lol if you are happy with Bing maps or Nokia maps...well be..it is your free choice...but remember that for example here in Slovakia Bing maps are no use to people and they got a lot of issues with them and not everyone has got a Nokia with their maps to cover their needs so this is a good option for them and since its free, well even more better...and omg its only 2 euros or dollars or whatever if you want that app and you wanna support the man behind this all trouble of bringing them to WP then just be patient or quit crying and buy them...

noor2122 says:

Guys don't blame this apps developer by giving it a low rating....its a really gud app....so to whom we can blame for this whole thing its MS market place support ppl or MS itself.....bcoz they r responsible for this delay

party7uk says:

The point is this app has been advertised as being free for 1 day (Friday. 24hrs )
If this is the case then it should be free on the day in each time zone at not when they feel like it.
It may only be $2 but alot of people have already paid for this before it was pulled, and the reason it is free so those already paid won't have to pay again.

Peter McCain says:

Blame MS not the developer

There is noone to blame cauze there are some how to put this...lets say standards how are things done.If it says that it will be free it will be free. Its not so easy to say yay bling and now its for free...its like you dont understand how things work and how things are in such a big companies as MS...

How about yay abracadabra its free?

mottyboy says:

Then if they are not capable of delivering it as advertised, they should not advertise.
Hey petrol free for one day, fill tank oooops that'll be £75 Please........

Apalis says:

Still not free yet... Hoax for free advertisement ?

Blame MS...do you know what caused the delay ?? If you are blaming someone then you should at least know who is responsible for it....

ZuNuKoo says:

Reading and scrolling through so many comments here. I thought I'd offer a suggestion to the next update to the WPCentral App. If it's possible to add a clickable link that says scroll to bottom of comments so you can see the last one and not have to scroll through sometimes 80+ comments. That would be appreciated. Also I'll get this app when it is free, they said it would be just be patient. It always takes time to go through didn't anyone pay attentions to what happened with I'm an WP Extras.. It just takes a little bit just keep checking the download link here not posting numerous comments.

Im in with that scroll down suggestion :-D

toby@wp says:

Great suggestion!

Jay Bennett says:

Suggestion heard and in the plans for next version

Peter McCain says:

How about a reply alert.

Ahhh.....words from the wise....

stone9659 says:

Not free yet in northwest indiana

Sarang68 says:

Please read the last line again. As per George Ponder Quote; We aren't sure when the pricing change will kick in so if you don't see it right away on Friday, check back later; Unquote.

ZuNuKoo says:

it's sad to see the most comments on this than any other article. But it should give the developer some joy to see how many people want this app again. Like I said before just check the download link that's all. I'll wait.. You have to remember it takes awhile for it to go through.

ArtSooby says:

Not free in Canada ... :S

toby@wp says:

A bit more than 7 hours left in Germany. Not available for free yet. Will this be available for free for 24h no matter when they start?

mangoose says:

mangoose says:

Omg! U again! As I said to your first "ha ha gotcha" - u need to be shot for doin this! Can't u see the potential MS riot lingering in the cyber air....id think twice before doing this a third time my friend! =]

dasarp says:

What are you talking about, it's still paid...

Apalis says:

Dude, stop joking around...

matlab22 says:

Not free in Narnia either. Figured we'd at least get it free first. :(

Same way in Oz & Neverland too!

phirefly says:

The comments here are sickening.....  These Devs work very hard on this app and really listen to their users.  The app hub can be painfully slow at times. These guys are NOT jerking your legs.  I paid for this app with it's previous version for latitude support and it's been a great app. Please have some patients.

yeahbuddy78 says:

Patience. And the hard working devs decided to offer if for free today. Its noon on the East coast and pricing has not changed yet. Those are the facts.

m0scs says:

STILL not free in UK! Just wasted 10 mind of my life reading all the comments.

But u must admit, those 10 wasted minutes were somewhat amusing?

not free in UK yet

ZX9 says:

12:30 US East Coast and no change.

shamelin73 says:

Still not free USA

Racxie says:

I think all of you are forgetting that it could be based on a certain time zone, it's 5:40pm GMT right now, but that's still only 9:40/10:40am in PST/PDT. The devs have said it'll be free today and I'm sure they're sticking by that, so just have some patience instead of being ungrateful sods who expect to get everything for free.

FiXxXeR520 says:

Not free, and it is Friday. :-(

longshark says:

Funny how people feel entitled to free apps that they would normally pay for just cos the app devs are being nice (except those that paid for it initially). If you think it's worth it and can't wait then pay for it.

Pappa Ed says:

1:00 pm and not free yet. Am I missing something?

YEP! all the 5 billion comments announcing that its STILL not free! Feel enlightened now? Lol

HD7guy says:

chadwick611 says:

Not free here on Mars

How's the weather there?

ZuNuKoo says:

They did this with ConnectMe reduced from $5.99 to $.99. And that took awhile to go through. (and i still don't know how to use it, I wanted to support the developer. Since the same thing happened to them.) Don't complain, when it's free it's free. Be happy you at least know about it. And if you miss it now it's your fault.

Ba2Py says:

hehe, did the same, i have connect me and dont know the first thing about that app

anglirich says:

artzznyzz says:

Finally ! !
For those of you who wonder why:
I spent 4+ hrs driving this AM in "new to me" neighborhoods and snakepit highways with only the nokia / bing default maps.  It was awful.  Phone (post "blue" update) kept losing data connection, & would not reliably pick up or sync with the GPS signal.  Then recentered on nearby cell towers, not using GPS data.  (Cold restart did not help.) And, despite being on the car charger the whole time, the battery dropped continually from 100 to 38%.  As the power dropped, the charge / discharge fluxuated and the phone went repeatedly into power saving mode.  Overall awfull.
(Note, my N L 900 gets flakey when the charge drops much below 3.8 volts, ~55% charge.)
Now, with gMaps, I am reminded how much I prefer the google maps.  Yes, it is a matter of personal choice, tainted by a few years of google maps on the Tilt & Tilt 2.
After a couple days I'll let you know whether the nokia / bing map problems were phone / update related, or whether the newly restored gMaps really works.
So, try them both & use whichever you prefer.
(BTW, I see no reason to use a paid version.  All the features I need seem to work OK to well on either of these, even spoken directions over the car radio . . .)
