Report: Windows Phone 7 getting crushed in UK by Android, being outsold 15:1

Although numbers are hard to come by, a blog post from online retailer MobilePlease shines some light on the poor sales of Windows Phone 7 so far.  In the post, the large online retailer gives some details:

Windows Phone 7 has got off to a sluggish start as far as our customers are concerned, accounting for just 3% of smartphone sales and a little under 2% of overall sales through MobilesPlease.co.uk and our network of partner sites that share our data feed.

They then go on to mention how Symbian is still outselling WP7 3:1 and that overall, interest is low, even when they asked "a few local high street mobile phone retailers, both network owned and independent" their thoughts.

Granted, it is still very early in the game and we believe Microsoft has some room here to gain momentum. There's also the larger question if these stats represent the overall market, but even if they're not 100% accurate, it's a startling trend nonetheless. But Microsoft really does have an image problem to get over and only time, exposure and good word of mouth will make this happen. Oh, and that rumored January update may go a very long way, assuming it is accurate.

One source/shop doesn't say much, besides there's supply issues anyways. I'm still waiting for my phone for example. Of course the MS hate wagon is jumping all over this blog post just like the 40k one before.

I hope MS has more patience with WP7 like Google did with Android. I say this because I showed my WP7/Focus at my Thanksgiving gathering and most people had not heard of the new platform or thought oh no windows mobile is too slow and sluggish. Once they sampled my phone all 7 of them wanted to know which carrier sells it and if WP7 was coming to their carrier. I believe the more WP7 is demonstrated and shown that it is NOT windows mobile the sales will follow (the updates with help too)!!!!

A few things to keep in mind...this is a completely new platform so this is nothing to worry over; give it time to grow. Which MS will surely do b/c they have and still are spending tons of money on this. Just remember the Xbox platform, MS didn't make a profit on it for about 4 years. But now they're king of the hill and raking in money on the 360.

And as mamacita said, demos are big part too. For instance, I took my Kinect with me to Thanksgiving dinner. The fam had never played it, only seen it. By the end of the night they all wanted it. Hopefully at Christmas I'll be showing off my HTC Surround :)

You're both right, MS isn't going anywhere when it comes to mobile, they're here to stay. If the rumors about the first update being massive show anything it's that they're not sitting around wasting time.

Lackluster devices and a disorganized launch...

While some of the launch devices are better than others, none is killer. None have enough onboard storage, and the ones that can be upgraded are subject to a confusingly consumer-unfriendly process. The launch, and initial sales, don't seem to be a goal to have done well -- they just wanted to make the product available and then work on market share.

They need a killer device, minimum 32gb onboard storage with an option for 64gb, and a couple major updates to the OS -- the numbers should be more respectable in a year or so.
