Wordness is an interesting Windows Phone 8 word game. It has a Scrabble feel to it in that you have to create words from a 5x5 tile board of letters. It has an Othello feel to it in that you compete for ownership of the letter tiles. You take possession of the tiles (or own them) when you use them in a word.

On top of challenging game play, Wordness pits you against online opponents. You can challenge your Facebook friends or find an opponent at random from other Wordness players.

Wordness is a fairly simple game for your Windows Phone 8 device to pick up but it is very challenging to master.  Wordness is a peachy addition to the Windows Phone gaming library.

Splice is a trying little game for our Windows Phones. Splice is a rubik cube styled puzzle game (just in 2D) that has you maneuvering puzzle pieces around to connect two arrows of the same color with the puzzle piece segments.

There are over ninety-five levels of play with three degrees of difficulty. Splice starts out almost too easy but after the first few levels, the game begins to really test your concentration.

While the World Premier of "The Man of Steel" was earlier this week, many will be heading to see the latest Superman installment this weekend. If you need to hone up on your Superman knowledge the Superman Almanac for your Windows Phone that might come in handy.

For those with Lumia Windows Phones you have the exclusive Man of Steel app from Nokia that not only highlights the movie but also touches on the history behind Superman.  The Superman Almanac is from the developers of the Star Wars and Star Trek Almanacs and approaches things from more of a reference point of view.

The app has a ton of information on the Superman universe from full episodes from the 1940's animated series to biographies on your favorite characters. The Superman Almanac is a very inviting Windows Phone reference app.

Doors is a challenging puzzle game for your Windows Phone were you are presented with a wide range of puzzles. You have to solve the puzzle to open the door and advance to the next level.

Doors has sixty-five levels of play, all that can be re-played. The puzzles range from mathematical puzzles, matching games, and hidden keys type mysteries.  The game doesn't have a lot of flair but the puzzles can be challenging. All totaled, Doors isn't a bad option if you're looking for a game to pass short bits of time with.

Rando is a photo sharing app for your Windows Phone 8 device that approaches things a little differently than most photo sharing apps. Everything is done anonymously.

Much like other photo sharing networks, with Rando you take photos of what you're seeing, things of interest or anything else you want to share with the world. But instead of posting the image on a network where others can view, comment or like the image, your photos are sent to another Rando user anonymously. In return, you'll receive an image from a Rando user.  If you don't send a pic, you won't recieve a pic.

It's an interesting approach to photo sharing and with apps also available on iOS and Android platforms, you'll definitely get a wide range of images.

Location Reminder is a Windows Phone 8 app that is a convenient way to tag locations and set location based reminders about them.

For example, you order a birthday cake at the local bakery you drive by daily. With Location Reminder you can save the location of the bakery and set a reminder to pick the cake up. As you drive near the bakery, a toast notification will pop up reminding you to stop and pick up the cake.

Location Reminder can be a handy app to help remind you to pick up that loaf of bread as you pass the grocery store or remember to take your clothes to the dry cleaner as you leave the house.

Finger Party is a Windows Phone game that sounds a little too easy but turns out to be a rather challenging game. Finger Party will test your concentration and dexterity as very few games can.

The game concept reminds me a lot of a solo version of Twister just the targets are moving and you only have to twist your fingers. Finger Party can get a little frustrating but it is definitely one Windows Phone game worth trying.

Death Worm is an entertaining and addictive game for your Windows Phone 8 device.  There's room for improvement but overall, Death Worm is worth a try.

Inflexiball is a new Windows Phone 8 game reminiscent of the old Arcanoid or Breakout video games but with heavy Steampunk influence.  Inflexiball also has a RPG feel to things with upgrades and enhancements that can be purchased with coins you collect during game play or purchased in-app.

In just playing Inflexiball for a short bit, it makes a good first impression.  Graphics are steaming, game play challenging and if your a fan of the Arcanoid styled games, Inflexiball is worth a look.

Review: T-Mobile Nokia Lumia 521

Windows Phone Central's review of the budget-conscious Nokia Lumia 521, exclusively on T-Mobile US

While Nokia has been busy unleashing the Lumia 520 Windows Phone to various global markets, T-Mobile has landed an exclusive variation, the Lumia 521. It's a compact, budget oriented Windows Phone that reminds me of the Lumia 710.  Maybe a little more refined that the older Lumia.

The scaled back Lumia 521 lacks a front facing camera, camera light and isn't that bountiful on RAM or storage space. While the Lumia 521 may not be a "high end" Windows Phone it fills a niche.  In combining the low-cost of about $150 and T-Mobile's "no contract" plans, the Lumia 521 is a good choice for the first time Windows Phone owner, parents looking for a reliable Windows Phone for their teenager, or anyone else just looking to save a few dollars.

After spending a little time with the Lumia 521, we've found it to be a rather solid addition to the Windows Phone family.

Voice Butler is a fairly simple voice command app for your Windows Phone that will help you do a wide range of tasks that includes checking the weather and set alarms. It'll even let you take a photo using a self-timer.

The app itself is more or less a help directory and on/off switches for alarms and timers you set. While there's not much window dressing for Voice Butler it does have a healthy range of voice commands that can be initiated with or without the app open.

If you're looking for a voice command app for your Windows Phone 8 device, Voice Butler is one to consider.

You play the role of a young Prince sent away to boarding school. Upon your return you learn that your Aunts and Uncles have taken over the kingdom. Your job, conquer the various castles and retake the kingdom as King.  A Medieval family feud of sorts.

Game play is challenging, animations great and all totaled, Royal Revolt is a nice addition to the Windows Phone 8 gaming library.

Despite his games’ typically high quality, limbless hero Rayman is generally lesser known than his contemporaries like Sonic and Mario. Starting out on the Atari Jaguar, Playstation One, and similar platforms in 1995, the original Rayman stood out thanks to its beautiful 2D graphics, unique atmosphere, and excellent soundtrack. Two strong 3D sequels followed – you can even get 2003’s Rayman 3 on XBLA, in fact.

Rayman kept a low profile after that, only showing up in the spin-off Rayman: Raving Rabbids minigame collections. Soon the Rabbids games left Rayman behind to become their own series, most recently with Rabbids Go Phone for Windows Phone 7. It seemed like Rayman had forced into retirement, doomed to live on only in the minds of nostalgic gamers.

Luckily for platform gaming fans, Rayman came back from obscurity with 2011’s sleeper console hit Rayman Origins. The fourth mainline Rayman game returned to 2D graphics, and how! Origins boasts one of the most striking visual styles in all of gaming, not to mention pretty much everything you could want in a platformer. And now Rayman Jungle Run from Pastagames and Ubisoft brings that same 2D goodness to Windows Phone 8 in a truly killer mobile adaptation.

Windows Phone developer extraordinaire Rudy Huyn, the mastermind behind TVShowFuseWikipedia, and soon Vine (unofficial) has a new app out that has blown us away with its design.

Counters is one of the simplest Windows Phone 8 apps we've seen and if even if you don't have a need for it, you'll want to gaze over it's UX. It's designed to help you keep count of things such as days until you vacation, number of invites to a party, or anything else that can be counted or counted down.

Counters also takes advantage of our Live Tiles by letting you pin individual counters to your Start Screen for easy access.  This really comes in handy if your counting down the days and need an easy reminder.

In a nutshell, Counters is a very clean, simple and straight forward Windows Phone 8 app to help you count.

Windows Phone Central's review of the the Lumia 520, the cheapest Nokia Windows Phone yet

The Lumia 520 is a well-priced Windows Phone for an entry-level model. The option itself provides consumers an affordable Windows Phone that doesn’t have a negative impact on the user experience. The beauty of the Lumia 520 is one would assume it runs Windows Phone 7.8 and uses a CTF display, but we’re talking about Windows Phone 8 hardware here.

That said, this is still a budget smartphone and you should not make the purchase with the same expectations of a Lumia 720 or Lumia 920. There are features missing and corners cut to save on cost, but note this: it’s a superb Windows Phone and we’d never grumble at the price.

Instagram has been a hot topic of late with the Windows Phone community. We have Instagraph that was the first to find a work around to let us upload photos to Instagram by loading images to their servers first, then to Instagram. Instance (formerly known as Itsdagram) was the first to crack the code and allow for direct uploads.

While all this was going on we had another Instagram client following along in the shadows. #2InstaWithMassiveLove is a fully featured Instagram client for Windows Phone 7 and 8 devices. You can view your feeds, view your profile, upload images and even order prints.

We did run into a few bumps in the road while giving #2InstaWithMassiveLove a try, but overall it's a fair option to consider when looking for a Windows Phone Instagram client.

We've taken a look at Gibbage Cases before with the HTC 8X and recently the designer behind these 3D printed cases, Kevin Miller, expanded to offer similar cases for the Nokia Lumia 920.

The cases are skin like but don't completely cover the sides and backing of the Windows Phones. They offer a stylish alternative with minimal protection from scuff, nicks and dings. These cases may not tickle everyone's fancy but they can make your Nokia Lumia 920 stand out.

The Amzer Shellster ShellCase isn't a stranger to Windows Phones. We took a look at the Amzer ShellCase for the Nokia Lumia 900 and found it to be a nice shell/holster combo.  The Shellster recently landed in the Windows Phone Central Accessory Store for the HTC 8X and we recently took it out for a test drive to see how things translated to the HTC 8X.

The ShellCase is a two piece case that has a half-shell that wraps around the HTC 8X and a belt clip holster that the shell slides into. The case is made of hard plastic that has a rubbery, textured finish. As with the Lumia 900 model, the Amzer Shellster ShellCase isn't a bad option if you are looking for a belt case solution for your HTC 8X.

Aces of the Luftwaffe is a relatively new game for Windows Phone 8 and is quickly becoming one of our favorites. Aces is an arcade styled game with an RPG touch.

To say Aces of the Luftwaffe is a fast paced game may be an understatement.  If you blink you'll be over run with enemy planes.  Game play is challenging enough to avoid getting stale and graphics/animations are just ducky. If you're an arcade game junky or just looking for a fun game to pass the time with, Aces of the Luftwaffe is definitely worth checking out.

NBA Jam Review: Catching Windows Phone on fire!

Way back in the eighties and nineties, Midway, the developer most remembered for creating the Mortal Kombat series also introduced a couple of sports series into arcades. First came Arch Rivals (basketball) in 1989 and then High Impact (American football) in 1990. Both games enjoyed some popularity, but it was their league-licensed sequels that really caught on fire: NBA Jam in 1993 and NFL Blitz in 1997.

NBA Jam became a staple of the 16-bit era (right alongside Mortal Kombat), thanks in part to a bevy of home console ports. The series had largely died out by the mid-2000s, shortly before Midway itself went bankrupt. Jam could have ended there, but Electronic Arts (in what some would call a rare act of benevolence) rescued the license in 2010 and published a new version for home consoles, followed by an even better XBLA sequel, NBA Jam: On Fire Edition.

When you first look at Block Blaine: Out West's listing in the Windows Phone Store, you may say "pass" and move on to the next title. First impressions give this Windows Phone 8 game a feel that a little polishing (mainly with graphics) wouldn't hurt.  While the Block Blaine has a rough appearance, the game concept isn't too shabby.

The block graphics could use a little work and the main character, Blocky Blaine, could use a little facial expressions. But move past the rough appearance and the physics based game has potential.

We’ve seen Wi-Fi calling in the past from carriers and it usually involves having a separate router-like device that you need to “rent” from your operator. The problem with that system, besides the extra cost, is it’s not mobile so it only works at home (as opposed to a friend’s house or your local Starbucks).

T-Mobile has a new Wi-Fi calling initiative and the low-cost Nokia Lumia 521 is the first Windows Phone to have the feature (the T-Mobile Lumia 925 will have it too at launch, and perhaps the Lumia 810 may get it with its Amber update later this summer).

So how is it? It’s actually one of the coolest things we’ve used that has improved mobile connectivity. Sure, it making calls this way still counts towards your minutes, but it goes a long way in improving reception in certain cellular dead-zones.
