Rumors

(Concept Surface phone by YrOnimuS)

Back in October, China Times reported that Microsoft was working on a self-branded Windows Phone for release sometime in 2013. Shortly after, tech site BGR also reported that they had heard similar information. Likewise, we went on record with our own source stating that indeed, Microsoft has a device in the works.

Now, the venerable Wall Street Journal is going on record with a source of their own stating that Microsoft “…is working with component suppliers in Asia to test its own smartphone design” although they are unsure if they are going to go into production with it. The device is reportedly between 4 and 5 inches, which as far as phones go is quite vague. No other details were provided and of course, Microsoft had no comment.

While Verizon is slated to offer the HTC 8X Windows Phone, the company may go a step further and add wireless charging to the 8X.

The variation will be similar to what we've seen with the Nokia Lumia 920 and will not add any bulk to the phone. Speculation has the wireless or contact charging feature being an exclusive to the U.S. market.

If this holds true, wireless charging will be an interesting option to help the 8X compete with the Lumia 920.

New Windows Phone 8 handset from Huawei?

Well, well, well. Look what we have here, a mysterious handset that's reportedly manufactured by Hawaei. The manufacturer has yet to fully open up into the Windows Phone market, though a number of leaks have been previously covered by the news, including ourselves. So, what are we looking at in the alleged photos?

There is some speculation out there that has the Nokia Lumia 920 Windows Phone becoming available from AT&T on November 11, 2012.  We can't really call it a delay seeing that AT&T has never announced a date for availability.

We report this with a bit of caution in that none of our sources have confirmed the November 11th date. We still are leaning towards a November 4th release with pre-orders beginning this weekend but for now, we see this latest rumor going either way.

While the AT&T release seems to have a moving window, luckily we won't have long to wait to see which date may or may not be right.  As always, if we hear anything more concrete we'll pass it along.

While we ramp up for the launch of Windows 8 next week there is still a fair few questions about pricing for Lumia devices.

Someone has spotted the Lumia 820 going for the sum of £379.99 on a system. As with all such pre-pricing, this could be fact or fiction as nothing has actually been revealed on pricing as yet.

Verizon HTC 8X

Here we go folks, with the rumor of Verizon having issues with Windows Phone 8 being dispelled by Paul Thurrott recently, we can get back to guessing when it will launch.

Luckily, we don’t have to guess too much as reader Adil T. has tipped us on this image and some launch info for Verizon. The info comes from friend of his who works for Verizon and as you can see, that gorgeous HTC 8X is running on Big Red’s network (check the Phone Tile).

Regarding the launch, HTC evidently has a “save the date” for Tuesday, November 6th with a launch window around the same time—in other words, very soon.

Oh and is that an ATIV S on that screen back there or is that just a generic Windows Phone?  We’ll try to dig up some more info as it comes in. Thanks, Anon, for the info!

Some images of what looks to be a never-before-seen Windows Phone have been spotted in some marketing images for Microsoft. The device looks Zune HD-esque with a chrome border, sharp corners and a rectangle like shape. The device even has the Windows Phone 8 flag logo near the button.

So the question is, what is it?

Remember the alledged ZTE Windows Phone 8 hardware we took a look at last month? In that article we also looked at some colourful devices that sported a centralised USB port, which is the norm with latest Windows Phone hardware. Could they have been the real deal? We're still not entirely sure which way to lean, but what we do now know is ZTE has confirmed at a conference that they'll be supporting Windows Phone 8.

A story recently ran on the site Daily Mobile—a site which we are not familiar with—claiming that Windows Phone 8 devices on Verizon are running into problems, potentially causing a launch delay or even cancelation. We’ve been tipped on this by quite a few readers asking us to weigh in on the matter. After all the story does seem a bit sensational, bordering on hysteria.

First off, we know for a fact that the Nokia Lumia 822 aka Atlas is in active testing for the carrier with photos of the device having been leaked and even feedback from one of Verizon’s employees on the device. That should tell you something right there.

So... after the Surface frenzy, for October we have another huge expectation left: Windows Phone 8. Microsoft is expected to fully unveil its next-gen smartphone OS at the very end of this month. But as always, things have started to leak ahead of the schedule, and source of the leak is China.

A Windows Phone Central reader, who chooses to remain anonymous, has sent us photos of Best Buy's upcoming store ad for October 21-27 that lists the HTC 8X as available for pre-order, both in-store and online. The flyer fails to list carrier or pricing information, but the depicted device is AT&T branded. We know from previous announcements that Verizon and T-Mobile will also be getting HTC's flagship WP8 phone. Being that Best Buy offers phones from those carriers as well, it wouldn't be shocking to find the 8X up for pre-order from all three on the same day.

The 8X is HTC's premium Windows Phone 8 offering. It sports a 4.3” Super LCD2 display with Gorilla Glass2 at 720P resolution, a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm S4 CPU, 1GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. It also has a 8MP camera and NFC. HTC is hoping to set the 8X apart from the competition by partnering with Beats Audio to include advanced audio software and a 2.55v amplifier for increased sound quality.

Thanks, for the pics, Anonymous!

Suppliers in Asia have apparently spilled the beans on Microsoft's production line plans for its coming Surface devices.

If the information is to be believed, MS have put in component orders to ensure they are able to produce 3 to 5 million of the devices for the fourth quarter. With such an order Microsoft looks set to go into mass production rather than just produce a limited run as some speculated on.

We know that AT&T will be offering the HTC 8X Windows Phone but a tipster has let it slip that AT&T may be offering the 8X in 8GB and 16GB versions.

The information on the 8GB version came to light in a training session. At first we were thinking the 8GB version was the 8S but AT&T has only announced the availability of the 8X.  It's possible that AT&T will offer two storage size options for the HTC 8X with the 8GB being sold at a lower cost (much like we see with the iPhone).

Could HTC be offering AT&T customers a choice with two version of the 8X? If so, would you jump on the 8GB version of the 8X if the savings were right? Speaking of which, pricing wasn't mentioned on the AT&T HTC 8X tip.

The nice thing about all these rumors is that we don't have too terribly long to wait until everything comes into focus.

It's your destiny

If there is one nagging issues that Windows Phone can’t get away from it’s the so-called "app gap". Specifically that some major apps or services are still missing from the platform and will prevent potential customers from switching smartphones. The problem lessens every day when a new big name title launches on Windows Phone, but if there was one that people really want, it’s Instagram.

We’ll leave our personal opinion about the hipster photo service to the side because in the end, it doesn’t matter if we like it or would rather stick a fork in our eye than use it. The masses have spoken and Instagram is a “must have” just like diabetes for Americans.

Our friend and colleague Kevin Michaluk from CrackBerry has gone on record recently, vehemently we might add, stating that Instagram is absolutely coming to BlackBerry 10.

Earlier we reported that Suning (reads "soo-ning") gadget chain (a good equivalent of Best Buy in the US) is going to distribute Microsoft Surface tablets in China, making Suning the first ever third-party distributor of Surface globally.

Just a while ago, Suning sort of confirmed the rumor, and hinted at a bit more, by posting a very interesting update to its official account on Chinese social media website Sina Weibo.

Samsung hasn’t exactly been forthcoming with showing off its ATIV S device so it’s good to see others getting unofficial hands on time with it.

We get some nice shots of photo and video backup options, as well as the text message backup. Interestingly in this revealment we see a new option for call blocking functionality in the system settings.

Photos have been captured of what appears to be Surface ads in Paris. Taking on the same form of graffiti style as those seen in the US recently we’re wondering if this is the start of a concerted effort to get the message out to those in Europe.

These type of ads have been appearing in the US for some time but so far we haven’t had anything at all globally, leading many to begin to worry about availability across the pond.

Live Apps, Microsoft's new marketing language

Yesterday we ran a story with some new marketing material for Best Buy that focused on Windows Phone 8. What caught our attention was the use of the term ‘Live Apps’ and even more so the description on how to view them (swipe up, down, left, right).

The idea as the time was that this might be some new feature—possibly related to multitasking e.g. mimicking how Windows 8 handles multiple apps. The other was that this was just Microsoft’s rebranding of Metro apps to Live Apps (due to that trademark issue).

This morning, we can share a lot more information on this that has come forward. Some good, some disappointing.

Are Live Apps just Metro Apps renamed?

Now that some third-party stores are getting their marketing and display setups for the big Windows 8/Windows Phone 8 co-launch at the end of the month, some new questions are being raised.

First and foremost is what are “Live Apps”? The term comes via a display sign that asks users to swipe up, down, left or right on the screen to explore them at a Best Buy store. The questions is, we just don’t know what they are exactly.

Two possibilities naturally present themselves: this is a new, unannounced feature for Windows Phone 8 or this is just a display-unit addition for demonstrations with no serious implications for the platform. (The tipster who sent the images into Neowin does not believe it’s a demonstration tool, but rather an actual feature for what it’s worth.)

The HTC 8S, the company's mid-level Windows Phone 8 handset, is on its way to US Cellular, according to a thread created on TeamUSCellular. Member iRub1Out published a number of handsets that are heading to the US carrier, but of course we're only interested in Windows Phone.

While the source is no way official confirmation, we can at least expect US Cellular to pick up a Windows Phone, and the HTC 8S looks the likely candidate. It's definitely a possibility, but be sure to take this rumour with a grain of salt as usual.

The carrier had previously signed a deal with ZTE to stock its 'Render' (Orbit) Windows Phone 7.8 handset.

Don't adjust your monitor

We’re not to sure what to make of this image from @NokiaPureview that allegedly shows the Verizon Nokia Lumia 9xx’s (aka "922") rear camera.

The image is blurry as heck but one thing is clear—we’re looking at something that is different. That’s not the Lumia 920’s camera bezel, with the familiar Carl Zeiss metal plate. But it’s not quite the PureView 808 either, though there appears to be a bit of a bulge, raising the camera upwards a bit. If that is the case (and now we’re speculating about a supposed image), then that does hint that Verizon 9xx has an improved camera of some sort (or a thinner body as rumored).

We know that AT&T is getting the Nokia Lumia 920 and 820 Windows Phones. T-Mobile is slated to get the Lumia 810. We've also seen a Nokia Lumia 822 floating around that is headed to Verizon.

We may need to add another number to the mix, the Nokia Lumia 922. A series of tweeted rumor is out there by @NokiaPureView who is claiming to have handled a Verizon Lumia 9XX (presumably the 922). The tweets mention that the mysterious device has a "matte finish, Pureview, is thinner, lighter and better."

Granted no pictures were offered on this mysterious device and according to @NokiaPureview Nokia CEO Stephen Elop doesn't want any pictures taken of the Verizon Windows Phone.

Should information which has been passed on to us be accurate, O2 UK will be sporting not three, but four Windows Phones. A Windows Phone Central reader was able to extract details from the carrier surrounding the potential stocking of a Lumia 920 with LTE capabilities. A support representative answered queries with some degree of affirmation.

The Lumia 920 has been picked up by EE (Everything Everywhere) as an exclusive launch handset for its new 4G LTE UK network. While the exclusivity will be limited in duration, and other operators (including O2) will subsequently be able to stock the Nokia flagship Windows Phone, it's positive to see a UK carrier planning to arrive at the Microsoft party with chocolate cake.

The much anticipated launch of the Microsoft Surface tablets is less than 20 days away. So far, word is that the product will only be sold through Microsoft's own retail stores. Alternative retailers remains largely guesswork. If that's the only destined distribution channel, it means relatively limited availability for Americans, and a big red "no way" to everyone elsewhere.

According to latest leaks from Chinese site WPDang though, the situation will not be that bad. At least in China, Surfaces will be sold through Suning (reads "soo-ning"), one of the country's leading consumer gadget retail chains.

Late last week we wrote in length about the unwarranted uproar caused by the AT&T exclusive Nokia announcements. At the centre of the controversy was the notion that there would not be a Nokia Windows Phone 8 device coming to Verizon. [Actually, it was about them not getting the Lumia 920 -Ed.]

We could be seeing the first signs of life from the coming Nokia refresh for Verizon as The Verge reports, via @evkleaks, on this Atlas device.
