Apps
Wow, just last night we posted about Screen Capturer v2, which allowed one to use take screen caps on their device in Mango--a first without being tethered to a PC. Then Windows Phone Hacker patched it so that you didn't need to have to be interop-unlocked, which cuts down on the requirements.
Now version 3 just hit and will you be impressed:
We just loaded it up and it works like a charm--so simple and easy to use, plus you can keep the "task" open for a few minutes, allowing you to take numerous screenshots without having to reenter the app. Simply brilliant and a must have for anyone who is dev unlocked.
Grab the app here at XDA.

Yet another feature that the competition supports that is absent from Windows Phone. How hard can this be to put in the OS Microsoft?
It's not that it's hard, it's not. It's just not a priority for them, which I agree with.Only people who really need this are power users, developers and tech blogs. Why does the average user really need this? That's not saying there aren't practical uses and MS will add it, but the other 500 features they added in Mango were clearly of more importance. Fact is, when making an OS, you need to triage what you want to do and what you can do. Sucks, but that's just the reality of OS development.
Not just OS, but software development in general.
Daniel,I agree that the regular Jo Schmo isn't waiting for a Screenshot tool. But Microsoft should have enabled this/build in for developers. Especially those that still work on 4 year old laptops, of which the graphics adapter is not supported anymore by the manufacturer, so they can't find/have a compatible driver that the emulator wants to run properly. No problem for them, since they can directly run on a phone too, but rhe only thing that was still missing was a work around to take screenshots for the Marketplace. And with this, we finally can.
I agree but it does hurt the momentum of the OS. It's harder to share and explain to the UI to others - plus sometimes, you just wanna capture the screen and share it with someone. I use a windows phone as a lead designer and we communicate in visuals, this would just be a small thing that would help. Love and welcome this app though.
It's fine if the OS has gaps; what's inexcusable is not being able to fill in those gaps with 3rd party apps. It seems as if this screenshot app would never pass certification, which is a shame. And there are plenty of uses for screenshots-- go to damnyouautocorrect.com for examples.
I disagree. Sometimes, like when using TuneIn or even IE, is much easier just take a screencap than favorite a website or open OneNote to to write the name of a music, just to cite two examples. And since I posted a screenshot of my Homescreen and another one of People Hub on Twitter, less than 5 minutes later 3 friends replied me asking more about the OS and today one of them made a visit to a local mobile store to see the HTC Ultimate. And I'm nowhere near as popular on twitter, just 30 followers, but after this fact I can imagine how much buzz MS lost prohibiting regular users to show how good and different WP7 is to our friends.
I want this app and its a shame Microsoft won't allow developers to utilize the Os. Not sure if this prevent developers from making legit apps for the marketplace. I would like to have it but not going to do this HD7 like my HD2. NICE APP..
I guess another way of looking at it is like this. when you are dead last in sales and dead last in users using your OS having everything "and more" than what the others have is really a must. now it's taken MS one year to really bring this OS almost on an even keel with the others 2 big boys... I guess another year before we see anything else added.
I seriously think if people saw and interacted with the OS there would be more of an interest. I think the commercials need to show the WP7 design approach, interaction and philosophy. It's not for everyone but I think many folks would enjoy the experience.
Right you are but they don't and thats the problem, when they do the adds if they show the OS in action people go OoO...Like I do when I walk into the Apple store at the mall I take it out and play with it.people are always asking er..whats that you have there...
Oh my freaking Gawd!!!! Now I can scream like a little girl! LOL This is just what I wanted, screen capturer and no need to be interop-unlocked!!! :`D
this should be a default feature. Ive been saying this from the beginning. every OS has had it from the beginning. Copyright issues excuse is a rather lame one from MS.
Whats to get excited about? Is this another of those features the tech heads want but has no real value to the target audience, ie the average consumer?
It has a huge value to the WPCentral staff, and also people who want to take screenshots for strategy guides, to help others, just plain show people stuff, etc.
Curious. Do iOS, Android and BlackBerry all have screenshot built in to their OS.
Not Android, iOS does though. I don't know about BlackBerry.
AVERAGE USER NEEDS THIS BECAUSE THIS IS WHY IOS IS POPULAR. Because people screencap their text messages.http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/iphone+text

It's nice the guys at XDA have done this, but a screen grab app NEEDS to be available via the Marketplace, and soon. Any app that generate interest in WP are a given when they're used so frequently across social networks.
I feel stupid asking, but HOW do you sideload this stuff once unlocked from Chevron WP7??
