See what's inside the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 Windows Phones

Lumia 920 820

Both the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 from Nokia are aesthetically pleasing on the outside, but what about on the inside? Do both Windows Phones retain their beauty with their components exposed? has managed to publish photos of both handsets being taken apart, along with each and every component laid out to show how everything fits together to create the rich user experience.

We have previously looked at images of what the Lumia 900 looks like when torn apart, which revealed the magical kingdom of Nokia. What may (or may not) come across as a surprise is the insides of the Lumia 920 look considerably different to its older predecessor. Anyway, let's hop into it. Want to see the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 naked and vulnerable? Of course you do, head on past the break.

Lumia 920 Insides

It's an explosion of bits! Lumia 920 bits, that is...

As one can see above, we have the Lumia 920 on a work surface, ripped apart as if it wasn't a living being. But should one look at the photo without a true love for Windows Phone, the inner workings will be visible. These include the system board, multiple parts of the chassis, internal USB connector, PureView camera technology with OIS, as well as the battery with the metal plate for wireless charging to take place (next to the USB cable).

Lumia 920 Insides Diagram

The above chart illustrates the multiple parts that were laid out in the photo above and how they all fit together. One can clearly see the camera boot, as well as the dual microphones and the positioning of these components. It's still a solid build, which is what we've come to know and love about Nokia hardware, and hopefully we'll be seeing more "Lumia 800 dropped from 3rd story balcony" experiences.

Lumia 820 Insides

Oh no, poor Lumia 820 taken apart too...

The Lumia 820 also received identical treatment with the cover being removed and device dismantled. What's interesting to see is just how few parts are present, compared to the Lumia 920. The back cover is the major part of the Lumia 820, and one can see how it wraps around the device to protect internal components. The display is separate from the cover assembly, and the 4.3" size really shows through. Nothing else shown is overly exciting.

Lumia 820 Insides Diagram

This second chart shows all the goodies inside the Lumia 820. It's interesting to see just how thin the display is. A massive heat spreader is included in the build to presumably prevent singular hot spots, as well as improve heat dissipation. Slightly less advanced then the Lumia 920, but still the same strong Nokia construction.

Be sure to note that depending on which back cover you use on the Lumia 820, wireless charging may or may not be possible - check you've installed the right one.

Both handsets are expected to go on sale soon with pre-ordering already opening up in a number of markets. While we have the Lumia 820 on show, it would be good to see how the Verizon Lumia 822 is (if at all) different.

NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! Nokia has gone to the fruit side!!!!!  Just kidding

Rich Edmonds says:

It's funny because I mistyped it due to pressing the wrong key first, as opposed to mistaking OIS with iOS :-P good catch though!

O no they are not decent!! I'll look away because I value them im a gentleman :)

brorim says:

I"m still trying to work out why there is no gorilla glass on the 820

111san says:

I doubt the 820 has anything but a highly scratch resistant glass coating...maybe just not gorilla glass. They are after all putting hte super sensitive touch tech on it...and people are bound to use pens, keys ...even forks on the thing so should be fine

I love them both

As much as I appreciate and admire the very sexy internal beauty of the Lumia 920, I will NOT be disassembling mine when it arrives, lol. :)

toy#WP says:

Here is an unrelated and totally crazy thought. We know that Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 share the same core, we also know that Windows Phone 8 will run Windows phone 7 apps. Could Microsoft surprise us by announcing on Friday that Windows 8 can run Windows phone 7 apps?

That will be totally awesome and solve the lack of apps issue for Windows 8..... Alas! reality kicks in I realise that this is wishful thinking but here's to wishing

Mr. Brown says:

I'm with you on this one. We will probably find out tomorrow if that is the case.

wpguy says:

Really hoping it will be the case.

Adiliyo says:

Windows 8 and wp8 share common kernels but even they need to be ported to one another, it is easy to do, but it is something developers would have to do manually.
It would be a very nice surprise though and would help temorariky fill in some of the gaps in the windows store right now.

Tsyokiss says:

Put them back together and send them to me.. :-D

TechAbstract says:

Does anyone know what audio chip is in the Lumia 920? Hopefully it's a Wolfson chip, but that is wishful thinking for a Nokia phone.

tilemaster says:

oh no poor little lumia got ripped apart :-(
