Simple Calendar gets Week view and Today’s Word picks up new features in latest updates

Though Christmas is just around the corner, and major news slowing down, there’s still a few noteworthy updates worth reporting on. Late this afternoon, two of our favorite apps received some significant new features that may bring a smile to your face: Simple Calendar and Today’s Word.

Let’s take a look.

Simple Calendar 3.0.1

Last updated in October, the developer of Simple Calendar has been working behind the scenes on a few new improvements.

  • Week View
  • Bug fixes

Bug fixes are one thing but that Week View is pretty sweet.  As you can see from the above image, the new layout is for gives you a nice timeline of your week with various appointments. Tapping them reveals info in the top window.

Wes, the mind behind Simple Calendar, tells us he has “many more planned features” for the popular minimalist app, but he wanted to get this one out instead of doing one-big update. Going forward, he’ll focus on smaller, incremental updates. We’ll of course keep you posted on when those happen.

For now, you can pick up Simple Calendar 3.0.1 here in the Store. Windows Phone 8 only. Free with optional IAP.

Today’s Word 1.2

Bevue, pishogue, cachinnate, cete…sound familiar? If not, then you need Today’s Word. Bringing you a daily word of the day, the app is great for supplementing your vocabulary, especially with some of these obscure lexical choices. Even better is that the app looks great and it’s free. With over 500 reviews at 4.5 stars (out of 5), people sure do like it. We like it too, which is why we keep bringing you news on it.

Version 1.2 is now live in the Store and it keeps making things better. The last update, from just five days ago, brought Toast notifications but they were preset at 8 AM. Things are much better in version 1.2, though:

  • Fix app crashes preventing to enter the app.
  • Fix Toast Notifications bug
  • Add time to set the toast notification (It can't be exactly on time, see why in the setting page)
  • Add History of previous 30 words.
  • Add Favourite
  • Add Pin Word to start
  • Change Live Tile layout (Not flipping). Only showing word in wide tiles, and...
  • Can pin old style live tiles (Medium & Wide showing word, but Flipping).

That’s a boat load of new features, including that custom time for the Toast notification. Being able to go back in time and look up previous words will kill some boredom, especially if we missed last week’s head scratcher. The new Live Tile (no flipping), is much easier to utilize and having a favorites collection is a great way to remember such uncommon verbiage.

As we said, Today’s Word is free, looks great and it may give you something interesting to talk about. Plus, the developer is just nailing it with these bounteous and prolific updates. See, our vocabulary is getting better already!

Pick up Today’s Word 1.2 here in the Store.

I will keep pushing out updates for the week view... I already am working on the next update with performance improvements and some design tweaks.  I really just wanted to get this initial update out so I could get feedback from you all.  So please use the contact link in the app to let me know what you think. Thanks for all the feedback and support of the app so far!

If Simple Calendar can work out a way to hide calendars within an account (I don't want the birthday calendar in my Outlook account to show), it would be near perfect for me. Cal one-ups it in that regard, but I prefer the look of Simple Calendar.
