Skype App for Windows 8 announced and shown off in video and it’s looking great

This week is going to be big news for Windows 8, today Skype have released a post about the coming metro style Windows 8 app.

Set to release at the same time as Windows 8 on the 26th the app looks set to seamlessly integrate with the OS in the People hub and provide “always on” connectivity. On top of that, this looks like one of the prettiest Windows 8 apps we have seen, showing that the metro style when done right is simply gorgeous.

WP Central Skype App for Windows 8 announced

Smiley happy people, do they not know its monday?

Modern design or Metro, take your pick it’s good to see a first party app look so good. Considering how confusing the UI of the traditional desktop app is, this is a triumph in minimalism. The app looks to work well in snapped mode allowing you to get on with looking at your maps or other apps. Taking full advantage of the People hub in Windows 8 is also really neat and to be expected from what is essentially a Microsoft product. The days of a multitude of different address books is finally upon us.

Finally Skype looks to be delivering on their apps for the Microsoft eco system. We got an all-too-brief look at the Windows Phone 8 version recently which looks pretty good. The only client missing in action now is the one for the living room. The Xbox 360 has just been decked out with the tiled dashboard and some new apps but where is that crucial Skype client? Arguably a killer app in the living room combined with the Kinect, we can’t wait to see and use it.

Let us know what you think about the new Skype client, like it as much as we do? Sound off below!

Looks cool. Hopefully this is a sign.of the effort they put into their windows phone 8 app. I would love to use my phone on the go for Skype business calls, but currently it is just far too unreliable of an app, so I just drag my laptop everywhere.

So very nice design. Looks so more of how mobile technology should look. Not like boring icons you see in crappy iphone or android.phones

ThePKReddy says:

Can you use your Microsoft account with Skype now or do they still require a different ID? I hate having to remember my password

AndyMellow says:

You can in the Skype 5.11 beta - I assume this means it will come to all clients. I also hate remembering my password!

aln12483 says:

When you first login with your Skype ID within the WIndows 8 app, it will ask you whether or not you would liek to connect it to your Microsoft Account(read this on the Verge)...

Will Skype work on RT devices?  The article just says Windows 8.

kullkid92x says:

This is MAINLY done for windows RT :) anytime you see windows 8 and no specifics follow, just assume its for both windows 8 RT and Pro.

So true about the Xbox app. I want to travel with my surface and leave the iPad at home. However the Skype app for iPad gets some weak reviews, and FaceTime just works. Traveling for work right now and FT worked incredibly well between two iPads for saying goodnight to the kids.

I need something on the home end that will be just as easy...ideally on the Kinect in the living room, but otherwise on iPad or PC. Or maybe I just need to wait for Surface Pro and have one for travel and one for home.

JodyMaccz says:

They need to do work on the Windows Phone 7 app

Who says desktop and laptop users wont use RT apps?

hethler says:
