SuperTube updated with more features for a more immersive YouTube experience
Just as we covered an update rolling out for MetroTube, SuperTube -- another YouTube app for Windows Phone -- also has an update hitting the shores. SuperTube, previously known as YouTube Pro before rebranding earlier this year, was one of the first YouTube Windows Phone apps to feature HD and high quality streaming.
Upon returning to the Marketplace, the developers made the paid version free for all to download due to the situation which required them to take down the app and slap on a new name. Today we're pleased to relay the announcement of version 2.5 being pushed through to consumers. This is the first update we've seen for SuperTube since May, which is a good sign of support from the developer.
What's new in version two-point-five? We've got the following listed in the received changelog:
- Two video players apply to fast and slow network connection (option configurable on the settings page)
- "Watch Later" supported
- Offline playlist supports, play videos by shuffle model
- Live Tile icons now available in three styles
- Using Oauth2.0 as login model
- Change quality (LQ, HQ, HD) while playing a video
Pretty much puts it on par with MetroTube, and it's good to see more apps support "Watch Later" functionality. The free version of SuperTube is being rebranded to Tube Pro and will sport a different logo. This is due to many users not being able to update their app after YouTube Pro was removed all those months ago. This free version will sport all functionality and features present in SuperTube, but will be advertisement supported.
You can download SuperTube from the Marketplace for $1.29 (£0.99).

Yay Supertube! My favorite youtube app.

In terms of functionality it's definitely in front of Metro Tube since you can watch videos that are normally restricted from "mobile viewing" on SuperTube where in other apps the video is blocked.
Thank you for sticking it to Google, SuperTube.

I just posted a comment asking about this lol.
I will give SuperTube another try, but I didnt think it played restricted videos either.
Solidstate89 says:
Unless they've pushed an update to restrict recently and I just missed it, I've never had that issue.
If I try and watch a video in the browser and it says it's restricted I usually head to SuperTube and I've always been able to watch it using the app.

Question about YouTube apps in general.
I have seen the error 'video not supported on mobile' a few times recently and just wondering why some videos are restricted and if there are any YouTube apps that get around it.

I know this is kind of lame but supertube is in dire need of a tile make over. I just can't pin it to my start screen looking like that. Maybe in the next update.
kasuno says:
Yeah, I completely agree with you. The design of the tile looks so bad compared to other metro style apps, the logo should br plain, with no gradients at all, that's how it is metro imo
Solidstate89 says:
So change it?
There's three options for the tiles in the new update.
kasuno says:
Yeah, just noticed that there's a new option to make it a bit more metro!

It does play restricted videos. I love this app.

The best YouTube app on the marketplace. It is partly due to the fact that it has the downloading videos functionality.
