SVT Play Windows Phone 8

Swedish public service television (SVT) finally headed to Windows Phone 8 in April

Good news for our friends in Sweden, as evidently you will be getting an official SVT (Sveriges Television AB) app to watch on your Windows Phone 8 device next month, give or take a few weeks. The SVT for Sweden is analogous to the BBC in the UK and is considered to be a major source of news and some entertainment.

The info comes via their help forums for SVT Play (their mobile service) and right from the mouth of technical project leader Anders Herbert who noted that it will be here around April but only for Windows Phone 8 devices (due to restrictions on the earlier platform).

(Translated)

“Hello again, I'm sorry you had to wait for an answer. The decision has been delayed because a yes or no on the issue of support for Windows Phone was very dependent on how a possible solution would look like. We develop SVT Play internally with limited resources and we need to ensure that any new platform support won't limit service development in general.

Anyway: we have now found a sustainable way to get video playback on Windows Phone, and as it looks right now, SVT Play will function in [windows] phones later this spring, probably sometime in April. Because of the differences between Windows Phone 8 and earlier versions of the operating system SVT Play will only work on Windows Phone 8, not Windows Phone 7, 7.5 or 7.8.”

We’re told by be reader of the site Daniel P. that the lack of SVT Play on Windows Phone has been a “deal breaker” for a lot of potential customers in that country. If that is the case, then getting this service to work on new devices will certainly give a boost to the platform in Sweden and that's a good thing.

Now Austria's ORF should follow suit with its TVthek-App. It's available for iOS and Android, but not for WP. :/

radde says:

I will definitely forward this news to a Swedish colleague of mine who currently exploring Windows Phone. :)

Andreas H says:

Having SVT on WP is big. I think this will lead the way for other big names to make their apps available to windows phones.

iRS73 says:

Lysande :)

Nakazul says:

Jomenvisst e de det :D

Jamdot says:

Meanwhile ITV, Channel 4, Sky & Virgin couldn't give a shit about WIndows Phones.

Bah.

Såå najs. Väntar med spänning :)

NRK in Norway is also testing a solution together with MS Norway.
Hope to get it soon. (talks about "before summer")
Gratulerer til våre WP-naboer i Sverige, godt å høre at SVT endelig ordner opp :)

danjah says:

Brilliant! Takk for opplysningen.. :)

JellymanEN says:

Ja takker for opplysningen :-)

Nakazul says:

Tack. Verkar som vi e duktigare på att gnälla än andra länder som fortfarande inte vet nått alls. :P

Burasuteru says:

Underbart! This is good news. (:

Erik Larsson says:

Public service television is the biggest joke around and belongs in the 70ies. Forcing people to pay for something they don’t use or want.

Nakazul says:

Public service rules my bitter friend.

"Forcing people to pay for something they don’t use or want."

Unless you're an anarchist, that is the WHOLE BASIS OF MODERN GOVERNMENT. Wars, taxes, insurance, education, libraries, roads and sidewalks are all things I sometimes wish I wasn't "forced to pay" but that is life and I'm fine with it.

Erik Larsson says:

Love your logic, or lack of

Great news, now I'm just waiting for a reader that can handle borrowing books from Swedish Library!

Big Supes says:

After visiting Stockholm, I noticed the Swedes are very Apple orientated. WP needs all the help it can get over there so this is pretty big news. :)

Apple and Samsung as in the rest of the World. But Nokia has a special place in many Swedes ' hearts so there is a good chance of success if they are prepared to fight for it.

Nakazul says:

Yes, we even have Mac stores :-(

DJCBS says:

Well the Portuguese Public television (RTP) also has an App. And a Portuguese PRIVATE television (TVI) also has an app DEVELOPED by NOKIA.
So...this is nothing new nor worthy of report except for people in Sweden, of course.

Warren Dance says:

What's your point? This article was clearly written FOR people in Sweden. They weren't asking you to get excited about it.

What? I thought Sweden was the Centre of the World. Strange. Anyway, thank you SVT and thank you Microsoft Sweden.

Rockartisten says:

Well the real news here is that people filled the forums with complaints, threads were locked, and new threads created. After months of complaining, SVT budged. It shows that we the customers can help getting our ecosystem growing, by putting pressure on developers.

DJCBS says:

See, here's something that could have been mentioned in the main article.

Tobbe says:

Not worth a report? Yes, why don't we all start to make that kind of remarks. I bet that the guys running this site will be extra eager to make an effort then. Here's a couple of words for you: positive attitude. See if you can find any usage of them...

Local apps like this one is extremely important for WP to succeed. Swedes expect SVT play to function on any smart phone. Sure, instagram, runkeeper and other globally used apps are important to, but the fact that WP lacked Spotify (not really a local app but extremely popular in Sweden) and SVT early on might have had a very large effect on sales here.

Nakazul says:

There are many large networks still ignoring WP, this could be a turning point because BBC, for instance, have the same streaming policy as SVT and both channels have been ignoring WP. Now something happened, so lets hope for some TV love all over the world and that it started here. Now THAT'S positive thinking.

Wonderful! Looking forward to the SVT app.

wpjoe says:

This could signal the tipping point!

nizzon says:

This is awesome and important for WP in Sweden.
You should know that some (quite a few) WP fans has pretty much stormed SVTs forum the last 6 months (more?) with complaints for breaking a previously working service on WP, advice on how to get it working again and valid points and arguments on why their decisions, actions and ignorance towards WP was wrong.
People have contacted press and even local political delegates to get a reaction.
It paid off!

thomppa79 says:

Great! Svt play is for sure important to people in Sweden. It will definetely improve the momentum in Sweden.

Big news! Somewhat relevant as well, I heard from Swedbank customer service that they are "working on a solution for Windows Mobile (lol) and it's due the later part of 2013".

Swedbank is huge bank in Sweden and relevant in other Nordic and Baltic countries.

The reply (Swedish):
"Hej!

Tack för din fråga.

Vi jobbar på en lösning som även ska fungera på Windows Mobile. Den beräknas bli klar under senare delen av 2013.

Med vänlig hälsning
Swedbank AB (publ)."

Nakazul says:

Haha, bättre sent än aldrig, Windows Mobile :D (Better late then never) :-o

Kindis says:

Switch bank. I'm switching to Länsförsäkringar and now I have an app for all platforms including windows 8 as well.

aimuatrang says:

Another good news from Swedish front is:
Nokia will begin selling Lumia 620 on Thursday, March 21st, at swedish phone stores. More info can be found at nyheter.nokia.se.

Nakazul says:

This is the best thing to happen to WP since baked bread. Its been massive forum complaints here in Sweden about the lack of support from SVT and it seems gathering people in the forum and nag em to death actually works. YAY for us.
I thought it would work in the web browser , but hey, I'm not complaining.

Kindis says:

I hope you mean sliced bread. I prefer my brad baked ;)

Rockartisten says:

Sliced bread is nice and all, but if it's not baked why bother. ;-)
