Gibbage Cases for the Nokia Lumia 920 close to becoming available

Some time ago we took a look at Gibbage Cases for the HTC 8x. The cases are 3D printed shells that snap on to your 8x to give the Windows Phone a little bit of style and protection. There was mention that cases were in development for the Nokia Lumia 920 and it looks like the Lumia 920 cases will be here before you know it.

While the 920 cases are still in the prototype stage Kevin Miller, the designer behind Gibbage Cases, has posted the above video over on YouTube and is going to give away a 3D printed case to five viewers who subscribe and comment to the video.

Nokia and MakerBot team up for 3D printing live at MWC

Here’s something very cool at the Nokia MWC booth. The guys from MakerBot are here with Nokia’s Lumia 820 case reference design and they’re printing cases for the device right here on the show floor.

3D printing is still in its infancy, but MakerBot’s designs are looking really funky, making us all wish for a future where we can print out our own cases on a whim (I’m thinking day of the week cases, who’s with me?).

There’s not a lot more to tell you in words because really, you need to see the exhibit for yourself. Check out the picture gallery below as well as a short video demonstrating a brief section of the hour long process.

Gibbage Cases has been a roller coaster, grass roots effort by Windows Phone enthusiast Kevin "Gibbage" Miller. Miller was looking for a simple case to protect his HTC 8X with three principles in mind; protection, design and function.

The end result was a unique case that offered a buffer between the 8X and harsh surfaces. The Gibbage Case may not offer much protection from falls but it should protect the soft outer coating of the 8X from scratches and rubbing thin. We received a Windows Phone 8 theme version (complete with the Windows Phone Central Logo) of the Gibbage Case. We took it out for a test drive over the past few days and found it to be a nice option for those who prefer a minimalistic approach to their cases.

Gibbage Cases were supposed to be a new 3D printed cases for the HTC 8X Windows Phone and eventually for the Nokia Lumia 920. The cases were uniquely designed mainly to offer surface protection to the 8X and 920 from scratches. Plus they are kinda cool looking.

We were slated to receive a review unit here shortly but just got the news from the Gibbage Case creator that he's having to cancel any orders and halt production due to apparent quality control issues with his printing service, Shapeways.

Nokia is attempting to get the Windows Phone community involved in making new Lumia 820 cases. The company has released a 3D-printing Development Kit (3DK), which not only comes with the required raw files for 3D printers, but also guidance on what materials could be utilised, tips on what to look out for in creating a unique case, and other advice.
