800

Nokia had recently brought down the price of the Lumia 800, no doubt to help clear some inventory for the Windows Phone 8 launch. Seems like the price cut is doing wonders for sales in Finland where it’s purportedly selling out.

The Lumia 800 and 900 with the 100 Euro price cut certainly put them in the too good to miss bargain category. Could this price cut be just what Windows Phone needs to boost those numbers?

The title sounds familiar, right? It should, as this is the same Nokia offer as what we previously saw here in the UK. The manufacturer is offering Australian Lumia 800 and 900 owners the opportunity to claim a free pair of Purity HD headphones. If you have purchased a Lumia Windows Phone (either the 800 or 900) from today through to August 30th, you'll be eligible for a set of your own.

We've covered a number of deals the past few days and it's certainly a coincidence that most (if not all) have been Nokia Windows Phones. We've got yet another offer to reveal to you should you reside in the UK. High street retailer Phones 4u has the exclusive white Lumia 800 listed at just £15/mo with Orange.

The Lumia 800 is bundled at no extra charge, and the 24-month plan includes 100 minutes, 3000 texts and 100MB of data. It doesn't sound a lot if you're a power user, but it's the Dolphin package from Orange so one can always upgrade should they wish to do so.

The Phones 4u Lumia 800 product page shows a 3.8 / 5 average customer rating with 77% recommending it. Be sure to head on over to the retail website for more information. Note that Nokia have halted the free Monster headphones offer.

E-Plus in Germany is currently preparing to release the Windows Phone Tango update to consumers, according to reports. Much like Australia's Telstra, the update is set to hit Lumia 800 owners. "Tango" introduces a number of new features and improvements to the experience, including added MMS functionality and WiFi tethering (depending on carrier restrictions and firmware versions).

Be sure to keep an eye out for any update notifications and let us know when you receive the release.

Campaign Live has reported Nokia signing a product placement deal with UK television soap opera Hollyoaks, that will see Lumia Windows Phones being used and promoted in a number of episodes. The show will have characters using the Lumia 800 and 710 Windows Phones with Monster Purity headphones. The village bus stop will also sport Lumia advertisements, starting from July.

As well as the TV promotion, Lumia Windows Phones will be displayed on other platforms that stream the programme, including the Channel 4 website which will reportedly see the devices come to life with two Hollyoaks characters tweeting their on-screen personality. The deal is set to last for an initial four-month period. John Nichols, head of marketing at Nokia UK, had the following to say on the deal:

"This partnership is another example of how we are pushing the Lumia brand in new innovative ways, with a human approach across multiple platforms."

This is a superb move by Nokia as the show is popular with a strong young audience, something the company has admitted it needs to target to rejuvenate the brand.

The Lumia 610, 710, 800 and 900 were all set to launch in the Philippines, but the Windows Phones have had their entry into the country delayed due to supporting carriers. According to Electronic Pulp, all four Lumia devices will not be arriving anytime soon, which is a massive blow for both Nokia and Windows Phone with the Philippines being a rather important market to tackle.

We previously covered the Nokia launch party of the Lumia 710 and 800, but it seems as though things have gone downhill for the manufacturer since, with no immediate plan to provide the 610 and 900 with the same treatment. The carrier Globe Telecom is set to stock the Lumia 800, while Smart Communications picked up the remaining three Windows Phones. Nokia has reportedly given up exclusive rights to sell the handsets in the Philippines.

The Finnish manufacturer has an agreement with both Globe and Smart for only the carriers to market and sell the Lumia Windows Phone family of devices. This prevents the manufacturer from bringing in retail units and getting them into consumer hands in a speedy fashion, which has led to subsequent delays due to carrier demands regarding their own exclusive launches. The Lumia Windows Phones were originally scheduled for an early 2012 release in a number of countries. Thus far the rollout has been somewhat successful, but there appears to be a few cracks appearing in the Nokia walls.

According to the Nokia employee that Electronic Pulp who was questioned regarding the delays, the Lumia 610 low-budget handset was planned to be out in the public domain during the first week of April, but the manufacturer has hit a wall with the carrier agreement and now can't provide an accurate ETA on launch dates for any device. The company is reportedly working hard at ironing out the creases and hopefully both Nokia and the two carriers will work things out quickly.

So, to recap (as it confused us slightly too): the Lumia 710 and 800 availability is delayed, and the launch of the Lumia 610 and 900 is also delayed, all due to the agreement made with local operators. Should you be patiently waiting for any of the Nokia Windows Phones on either Globe or Smart, you might have a few more weeks to see through.

We've just received word that the Lumia 710 and 800 are on sale in Mexico City on Iusacell. Sales teams are reportedly pushing both Windows Phones positively with recommending the devices as "excellent phones". Booths are available in-store for customers (and potential buyers) to experience interactive demos.

We previously covered both devices heading to the country in the week just gone. The Lumia 710 is available at Iusacell from just $320 (pesos) on 24 month plans while the Lumia 800 is priced at $729 (pesos).

The Lumia 710 is also featured on the Iusacell home page. It's positive to see the carrier in Mexico actively promoting Windows Phones, both online and off.

We've previously reported on how the Lumia 710 and 800 do not support Internet Sharing, but the 610 and 900 do. It's a slight pain that has separated Lumia Windows Phone owners. Thankfully Nokia has confirmed that tethering will be available on both the Lumia 710 and 800 in a future firmware update - something we're currently on the lookout for.

The folks from Plaffo are reporting that the official Nokia Lumia Update section of the website is reporting that Lumia 800 firmware on Vodafone in Italy is currently in development. The site notes that they've already received 12070 so this alteration on the update page has to be a future version. As well as Italy, both Vodafone Spain (thanks SmartphoneApps.es) and UK are also "software under creation".

Should the manufacturer be working on the next version, this would hopefully include the missing tethering functionality. Are you with Vodafone and already on 12070? You could well be the first in line for Internet Sharing.

Although we take it for granted sometimes that everyone who buys a Lumia device (610, 710, 800 or 900) either knows Windows Phone or can figure things out, that is far from the case.

In turn, Nokia today has released a new app called Lumia Highlights and it's there to lend a helping hand to those who want to discover cool new things about their Lumia as well as the Windows Phone OS. The app features useful tips, tutorials, latest news on great apps and of course they hook you with the great accessories.

While by no means revolutionary, the app is nicely laid out and should give new and old users alike something to poke around to discover new things, so we like it.

Pick up Lumia Highlights here on your Nokia Lumia phone.

T-Mobile UK are rolling out the Lumia 800 12070 firmware update, according to customers who have received the notification. We received a few comments on our article covering the Three UK roll out last week that T-Mobile still haven't kick-started the process.

As mentioned before, depending on carriers who chose to release it, the 12070 firmware update will be rolled out to new countries on April 4th, 11th, and 18th until the update has been pushed out to every Lumia 800.

The firmware 12070 "battery fix" update will significantly improve available use between charges by optimisation to bring down the discharge rate. We noticed after updating a drop from 200mAh to <100mAh

Let us know in the comments should you also be receiving the update.

Thanks Scott for the tip!

With the confusion this week of some news blogs publishing alleged photos of a Lumia line waiting to purchase a Windows Phone at launch that later turned out to be an iPhone launch, we feel the need to relay some positive coverage of the Lumia launch in China. China Telecom released the Lumia 800c late last month, and announced along with Nokia that both companies have plans in place to market the handset.

According to the photos published on the Meizu discussion board, the Lumia 800c launch was well received by consumers with a healthy line being illustrated. It's a positive sign to see such interest shown for Windows Phone. Bravo, Nokia.

We've got some feel good news for the Monday morning with a Walmart employee revealing that the Lumia 800 on TELUS is selling well. The employee explained that the store only stocked Android handsets with the iPhone on the side for the past number of months. It would certainly be refreshing to see the award winning polycarbonate design and unique Windows Phone operating system arrive in stock.

As one can see from the photo, the Lumia 800 is available with TELUS for just $23.83 on a three-year contract, which is cheaper than going to the carrier directly. It's a good sign to see an employee of a retail chain to openly state that indicators point to Windows Phones selling well, and even the salesstaff who are selling the handsets are impressed.

Thanks Aaron for the tip and photo!

Nokia has announced the release dates for the Lumia 710 and 800 in Vietnam. Both handsets will go on sale and will be available on April 9th, for 6,299,000 VND and 10,599,000 VND respectively. Nokia Vietnam has listed 21 retailers to stock and ship the two Windows Phones, and all stores will be decorated in Lumia promotion material.

Unfortunately, the Vietnamese keyboard and language aren't supported by the platform, but are on the horizon (as well as Local Scout, Maps, etc.). Nokia has attempted to soften this blow by releasing Viet Keyboard, an app which provides a convenient text input solution for the Vietnamese language.

Users are able to type as they would normally in the app and then copy the text to the clipboard, which can then be subsequently pasted elsewhere on the smartphone. Viet Keyboard will be especially useful for common tasks such as SMS, email social network posting, and web browsing.

You can download Viet Keyboard from the Marketplace (Lumia restricted). Source: Mainguyen; thanks Hoang for the tip!

Nokia has been busy in Australia, and that's an observation that many residing down under wouldn't believe they'd ever witness hearing / reading when it comes to Windows Phone. The manufacturer revealed three Lumia Live events that took place across the country in three different locations - Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne.

We previously looked at footage and shots of the Lumia 800 launch party in Sydney earlier last month, and now Techin5 has published coverage from the Melbourne event. What was it all about? Keeping to the same theme which we witnessed in Sydney, the event in Federation Square, Melbourne sported a sizeable screen, Xbox Kinect and mat to create an immersive augmented reality experience for the public to enjoy.

Techin5 notes that while large amounts of interest was displayed by the public on such a fine day, there were multiple periods where it was relatively baron. On a positive note, crowd numbers peaked in the hundreds to witness action on the big screen. A Nokia executive confirmed that the large Nokia Lumia 800 displays spotted in Sydney will be heading to Melbourne in May. What's probably more interesting is the executive also affirmed the Lumia 900 was currently in testing (which is also already available to pre-order).

It was only last week that Nokia Germany confirmed they'll be rolling out the much anticipated 12070 "battery fix" firmware update to Lumia 800s. Now it seems as though Three UK is coming out on top with keeping customers up-to-date as we've just received notifications of an update for our Lumia 800.

The update, which was originally set for April 18th, has been confirmed by the manufacturer to be configured for a staged global release (with Singapore enjoying a premature delivery). Depending on carriers who chose to release it, the 12070 firmware update will be rolled out to new countries on April 4th, 11th, and 18th until the update has been pushed out to every Lumia 800.

After applying the update to our Lumia 800 we noticed a significant improvement to battery discharge readings. This should solve most battery life issues many owners have been experiencing. Be sure to keep an eye out for notifications on your Lumia 800s, or in Zune and the Mac Windows Phone Connector.

Have you received the update on your Lumia? If so, let us know what carrier you're with in the comments.

Globe Telecom are celebrating the upcoming release of the Lumia 800 Windows Phone by giving one away for free on Twitter. Partnering up with Nokia, the carrier has a shiny new 800 to give away to a lucky Twitter user. So how does one enter this small contest?

Simply tweet @enjoyGlobe with your favourite Nokia handset and when you purchased it, followed by "I want a Nokia Lumia 800 from Globe! #GlobeLumia800". It's that simple, and you'll then have a good chance of pocketing your own 800 for absolutely nothing at all.

Be sure to get your tweets in now to be in with a chance of winning a free Lumia 800 as we're told it's only open for today. You can now also pre-order the Lumia 800 from Globe for just P1,499 /mo, which are expected to be available by April 16th.

Canadian carriers have been pleased with how the Lumia Windows Phones have been selling, according to a report by MobileSyrup. While carriers aren't known to reveal negative sales publicly often, TELUS and Rogers have both stated that they are happy with their Lumia handsets, and that customers share this satisfaction.

Reade Barber, Senior Director Data Product Management at Rogers, had the following to say:

"Rogers is proud to have the widest selection of choice for our customers. The Lumia 710 is proving to be a customer favourite and has been a great addition to our Smartphone Lite lineup. We're also very excited to be the exclusive carrier of the Lumia 900, Canada’s first Windows Phone LTE smartphone."

Rogers packs the inexpensive, but highly rated Lumia 710. MobileSyrup spoke with a number of sale staff from Rogers and the majority were pleased with how the Windows Phone sold in-store. The carrier has the device priced at $29.99 on a 3-year contract, or $255 SIM-free.

Brent Johnston, VP of Mobility Solutions at TELUS, mentioned the Lumia 800 (currently on sale for $25) has met the company's expectations:

"We are very pleased with the sales performance thus far, with Lumia sales meeting our expectations."

Unfortunately, it's impossible to judge how positive this response is due to not knowing how high / low expectations were to begin with. Then again, should the handset be exceeding low expectations would also be on the right path with TELUS then able to be more confident with future Nokia handsets.

With how competitively Nokia is pricing the Lumia handsets, and how dissatisfied many Android users are with low-end hardware, it should be comfortable to assume the Lumia 710 will start to pick up speed while the 800 is available at a reasonable price for those requiring that little bit more (or an award winning design).

Good news is good news, nonetheless.
