The United States Department of Transportation is getting closer to establishing formal rules on whether or not to allow in-flight communications, including receiving and placing phone calls while on a plane. Likely, according to reports, that decision would be no, meaning that passengers would continue to be barred from placing or receiving phone calls while they are in transit.

Scandinavian Airlines has just launched its SAS Windows Phone app that allows you to pull up your travel information, manage your EuroBonus points, and also pin your boarding pass to your Start screen. The last feature makes it convenient to have your boarding pass readily available so you don't have to search for it and fumble with your phone when you're at the gate.

South African Airways (SAA) is the national airline of South Africa. Founded in 1934, the Star Alliance member is also the largest airline of South Africa.

The official app of South African Airways, FlySAA, landed on Windows Phone Store a couple of weeks back. While the app packs in most features expected from an airlines app, oddly, you can’t make flight bookings through the app.

The Windows Phone ecosystem in India is flying high – literally and figuratively. After Jet Airways and SpiceJet, another Indian airline has launched their Windows Phone app.

The popular low-cost carrier, IndiGo, is India’s largest airline in terms of market share, and one of the fastest growing low-cost carriers in the world. The airline operates to about 35 destinations in India and abroad with over 400 daily flights.

Lufthansa app now available for Windows Phone 8

The official Lufthansa app for Windows Phone is now available on the store. We previously looked at the airline having an app for Microsoft's mobile platform in development, but it's now live and ready to go. From booking flights, viewing timetables, checking in and more, the app is a rich experience, providing tools and features and passengers require when heading to and from the airport.

If you recall, all the way back at the beginning of last year, India's Jet Airways helped celebrate the release of the Lumia 800 in India by draping many of their planes in Nokia advertisements.

They have since followed up with a fantastic app for Windows Phone 7.X and 8, which came out at the beginning of May. The Jet Airways app covers you from booking, to flight status to rewards.

We may have missed it at the beginning of the month, but here's your chance to play catchup with us!

Windows Phone Central App Roundup: Air Travel Apps

This week's Windows Phone Central Roundup focuses on travel apps, more specifically air travel. With the Holiday Season in full swing, many will be taking to the friendly skies to travel to visit friends, family or just to get away from things.

These apps help you track flights, find your way around airport terminals and even help you remember where you parked your car. We've plucked five apps from the top rated Travel Apps listings in the Windows Phone Store for this week's roundup. It just so happens the five apps that jumped out at us are free so you can try them all without cost and decide which suits your needs and tastes the best. If we've missed your favorite, feel free to sound off in the comments.

Now that the Lumia 800 is going big world wide, including India (see earlier "flash mob"), we can see the fruits of their advertising campaign. Evidently, Jet Airways had made a deal with Nokia to paint their plans with the Lumia colors and Nokia banner.

Not a bad look, if we say so ourselves.

Once again, we can see the power of Nokia to turn heads and get their hardware noticed. We can't see what they have in store for the States.

Fly Delta lands in the Marketplace

Delta Airlines has launched its official Windows Phone app. Fly Delta is designed to make flying the friendly skies more convenient by giving you access to flight schedules, your travel itinerary, and reminding you where you parked your car.

The app allows you to log into your Skymiles Account, which will allow you access to your Skymile balance and Medallion.  You also can access the app as a guest, should you not have a Skymile Account.  Additional features of Fly Delta include:

  • rebook on an alternate flight when yours has been canceled or delayed
  • launch an interactive seat map and pick your seat
  • check your position on the upgrade or standby list
  • see the latest flight status and get terminal and gate info
  • map flights en route with an interactive flight tracker
  • save a photo and make note of your parking spot

Delta is already working on the first update to Fly Delta and hopes to bring the ability to pay baggage fees, track checked bags, view airport maps, browse Delta Sky Club locations, and explore Delta's fleet (plane layouts).

If you are a frequent flyer on Delta, Fly Delta will surely come in handy. Fly Delta is a free application and you can download it here (opens Zune) at the Marketplace.

Thanks goes out to Sasa for the tip!

British Airways app hits the Marketplace

We first had a glimpse of the British Airways app during Microsoft's Mango Preview Event. Well, it went live in the Marketplace today and looks like for those traveling British Airways, chasing your flights may have gotten a lot easier.

Key features include:

  • Instant access to the mobile boarding pass for your next flight from your Windows Phone
  • Information about your next flight, including check-in, live departure time and gate numbers (from Heathrow Terminal 5)
  • Review all your boarding passes and upcoming flight bookings
  • Track the live arrival or departure times for any British Airways flight
  • View terminal maps for airports across the world
  • You can also check in with your Windows Phone, see worldwide contact numbers and see the latest British Airways travel news.

The app doesn't appear to have the 3D seating view that we saw during the Preview Event and there's no mention of the live tiles (in the works for future updates?). Regardless, the app looks really nice and is likely to come in handy British Airways passengers.

The British Airways app is free and can be found here (opens Zune) at the Marketplace.
