Windows Phone Central App Roundup: Valentine's Day Apps

For those who have been out of town or simply hiding under a rock, this Friday is Valentine’s Day. If you have a significant other and have completely forgotten about this “special” day, we have a few Windows Phone apps that may keep you out of the doghouse.

This week’s Windows Phone Central Roundup falls a few days early, to help those who suffer from losing track of time and possibly saving countless relationships globally. Quick disclaimer though, we don’t guarantee any of these Windows Phone apps will save you from sleeping on the couch, save you from the silent treatment or successfully wooing your partner if you have completely forgotten about Valentine's Day.

We’ll touch on a few greeting card apps that may give you a little more time to run down to the local gift store, an app that will let you order flowers from your Windows Phone, a shopping app from a merchant that offers overnight delivery and a dining app just in case you forgot to make reservations.

Windows Phone Central App Roundup: Shopping Apps

While the Holiday Shopping Season is in full swing our Windows Phone can help you survive the malls, crowds and cross-town treks.  The Windows Phone Store has plenty of apps to help you shop online and locally as well as save you a little money.

This week’s Windows Phone Central roundup focuses on a handful of the more highly rated shopping apps available in the Store.  We touch on popular apps for retailers, online merchants and deal finders.  We also throw in a rather simple shopping list app to help you keep track of who’s been naughty or nice.

As with any of our roundups, if we have overlooked your favorite shopping app let us know in the comments below.

The Amazon Mobile app received a minor update today. Unlike the previous update in May, this bump offers little, other than unnamed bug fixes and performance updates. Amazon was one of the first big retailers to put out a Windows Phone app and it remains one of the best out there.

Amazon Mobile will not only let you surf the aisles of Amazon.com, place orders, check on your account, and more.  We've come to find that the Amazon Mobile app is also a great app to have handy while shopping to compare prices.  It even has a bar code scanner to make searching for products a little easier.  If you're looking for something that you can wait for the UPS man to deliver, it might save you a few bucks along the way.

Amazon.com has just updated their beloved mobile app with some bug fixes, performance improvements and a couple new features. Version 2.1.80.27 has added extended screen sizes and higher resolutions in order to display more product information on the screen and better product images. The update also allows you to refresh the Lightning Deals page at any time, to see the latest offerings.

Nothing strokes the Windows Phone enthusiast bone like getting an update to your apps. Canadians will be especially happy about the latest update to the Amazon Mobile app for Windows Phone. It brings support for our friends north of the border and a few other little things.

Just like our London busses, you wait around for ages and then they all come at once. It seems that someone has flicked a switch somewhere and released a few updates today for Windows Phone.

Of particular note, Amazon Mobile on its way up to version 1.9.1 and picks up support for the oh-so close Windows Phone 8. It’s good to see some developers with early access readying their apps for the shiny new operating system which is only days away.

Now supporting Japan, China and Australia

One of our top apps for Windows Phone is definitely Amazon Mobile because we’re Prime junkies, forever ordering things online for that sweet, sweet next-day delivery.

But not everyone can share our joy, which is why we’re always glad to see Amazon update their app to support more countries. Such is the case with version 1.9 that just went live today on the Marketplace.

We do love our Amazon Mobile app for Windows Phone--beautiful, useful and well designed the app is one of our must-haves (especially since we have Prime). However, we do get a lot of complaints about it, specifically its lack of support for the UK market (and others).

Version 1.8 just went live in the Marketplace today and support for the UK and Germany is now included (in addition to un-named bug fixes). Our own Rich Edmonds verified that the app is working there which should make many of you finally pleased. This update follows a previous one just weeks ago which added social features to the popular app.

Amazon Mobile gives you access to Amazon.com's vast array of goods from their location as well as 3rd party retailers. Allowing 1-click purchasing and a nice bar-code scanner, the app allows you to comparison shop when you're out in a brick-and-mortar store. In addition, you can access your account and track your orders.

Since the app is "new" to the recently added Marketplaces you can't search for it just yet. No worries as you can just use our download link to get it now. Thanks, Ben D., for the tip

One of the top apps for Windows Phone which we always enjoy seeing updates for is Amazon Mobile. The official app for Amazon.com has been a staple on Windows Phone since its initial release. And much like the eBay app, it gets better and better with each update.

Version 1.7 just went live in the Windows Phone Marketplace and it while it's not a major overhaul, we like the select changes in this update which include:

  • Sharing: Send and share links to products you find on Amazon via e-mail, SMS, Facebook or Twitter.
  • Recommendations: Manage your recommendations by tapping “I own it” or “Not interested”
  • We hate bugs as much as you do (so we fixed a bunch)

The social-sharing part is obviously the big seller here and we approve of its addition, after all it's always fun to share your latest purchases via your Twitter or Facebook, right?

If you haven't received the update just yet, hit this link to grab the free app in the Marketplace. So go forth you guilty, late night 1-click shoppers with your Prime accounts and go shopping!

We do like the Amazon.com app--it's well designed, sharp, fast and has that irresistible 1-click buying option. But the one thing it was missing was some Mango-love and that has now been resolved. Version 1.5 of the app was pushed out today bringing of course fast-app switching but in addition, Amazon threw in a few other fixes and new features as well:

  • Scan It: use your device camera to scan a barcode to check prices and availability.
  • Pin barcode scan to Live tile: From Start screen, click to instantly open barcode scan tool and search for products.
  • Fast application switching: switch from Amazon Mobile to other apps then return to where you left off.
  • We hate bugs as much as you do (so we fixed a bunch)

We've also noticed the name change: Amazon Mobile instead of just Amazon.com. We think the new title fits much better with the demographic. The "pin barcode" feature is real awesome but some users can't seem to find it. Well, here's your tip: Your Account --> "Pin barcode scan to start screen". Yeah, even we admit that's not the most ideal spot for that feature, but hopefully you can find it now. The barcode scanner will allow you to quickly launch the mini-app with 1-tap, scan the item and search for it on Amazon.com for the best price. Pretty awesome. Too bad you can't pin individual items though to your Start screen--seems like an obvious opportunity to us.

Pick up the Amazon Mobile app here in the Marketplace. Thanks, ShipWreck and pdawg17, for the tip!
