apps

Windows Phone developer extraordinaire Rudy Huyn, the mastermind behind TVShowFuseWikipedia, and soon Vine (unofficial) has a new app out that has blown us away with its design.

Counters is one of the simplest Windows Phone 8 apps we've seen and if even if you don't have a need for it, you'll want to gaze over it's UX. It's designed to help you keep count of things such as days until you vacation, number of invites to a party, or anything else that can be counted or counted down.

Counters also takes advantage of our Live Tiles by letting you pin individual counters to your Start Screen for easy access.  This really comes in handy if your counting down the days and need an easy reminder.

In a nutshell, Counters is a very clean, simple and straight forward Windows Phone 8 app to help you count.

Enjoying a good book on your Windows Phone

Windows Phone Central App Roundup: eReaders
Windows Phone Central App Roundup: eReaders

We have a mixed bag of Windows Phone reader apps for this weeks Windows Phone Central App Roundup. We have one of the cornerstones in electronic reading, an audio book centerpiece, one that doubles down, and one that is more genre specific.

These apps not only come in handy for those who like books but also for those looking for something to pass the time with other than games. There's a healthy selection of readers in the Windows Phone Store and we tapped four that stood out by name, reputation and ratings.

If we've overlooked your favorite Windows Phone reader app, feel free to spill the beans below in the comments.

Microsoft has unleashed this weeks Windows Phone Red Stripe Deals. Pricing has been slashed on the Xbox game Super Monkey Ball 2, glƏƏk!, and Hockey Nations PP.

For those not familiar, every week Microsoft discounts the pricing on a Windows Phone Xbox title as well as a app and game from independent developers. You easily identify them by the red stripe that surrounds the app/games Store icon tile.

I guess this is more about being funny than actually useful to most of you guys. Nokia just released an interesting app for Lumia 920T users on China Mobile. The app only does one thing: to lock the phone to either 3G or 2G network.

This may raise some eyebrows, since normally one could select what kind of network he wants in the system settings of Windows Phone 7 and 8. But no, that doesn't apply to China Mobile's Lumia 920T, which stays on 3G network by default. The 2G/3G/4G switch was removed by request of the carrier, probably in order to keep as many users on its 3G network as possible.

Last night as I was loading up a few apps on my phone I hit an anomaly: I was asked to buy Amazing Weather HD. Why is that odd? Well, Amazing Weather (along with Weather Flow) is one of my top apps and I bought it the day it came out, months ago.

As it turns out, it appears that this is becoming a widespread problem with the Windows Phone Store, a return of a similar glitch that hit Windows Phone 8 users last fall. That issue was much more frustrating though as it hit a lot of apps, depending on your purchase history.

If you're not already aware of the online Windows Phone store, which is available over on the official Windows Phone website (www.windowsphone.com), it's useful way of checking out Windows Phone content when at a computer. As well as browsing apps from developers, consumers are also able to look through and install OEM apps that are listed in the Nokia Collection, Samsung Zone and HTC Apps.

Prior to this feature it was only possible to check out the latest content from each manufacturer on a device.

Joe Belfiore is continuing to tease followers on Twitter that an app is set to be released for Windows Phone tomorrow. To kick off the coming week, consumers will be able to download a special app from the store, but it's not currently known what we'll be seeing. Much like Pandora (see the above photo), Microsoft's working hard to get more big name apps on the platform.

Nokia has been able to build important relations with developers to bring apps to the Windows Phone platform, and Lumia hardware in particular. But just how important are said partnerships to the handset manufacturer and Microsoft's mobile platform? The company has Bryan Biniak, VP, Global Partner and App Development, who takes care of apps that are developed for both Asha and Windows Phone.

Nokia has pushed out a number of updates for system apps, which we've received notifications for on our Lumia 920. The system apps that have been bumped to new versions are Nokia account, display+touch and extras+info. We've got the new build numbers, but no changelogs unfortunately. There is however, a noticeable change in the display+touch settings area, with the options being split into two panes.

Last month during Fitness Month we highlighted several apps that would help you track water consumption, calories and other aspects of your fitness efforts. ConsoTracker came to our attention that offers a lot of flexibility in tracking items from your Windows Phone 8 device.

ConsoTracker will let you track your weight, water consumption, gas usage, or anything that can be measured. ConsoTracker has plenty of features but setting thing up can be a little overwhelming. Still, it's a nice option for those looking to keep track of things from their Windows Phone.

While the Kinect’s suitability for gaming is sometimes a subject of debate, nobody can deny that the Xbox 360’s motion peripheral is perfectly matched for workout games. Of all the consoles, only the Xbox 360 with Kinect can track a user’s entire body positioning with any real degree of accuracy. Gamers who aspire to get into better shape without leaving the home have many options thanks to these Kinect workout games.

Microsoft has thrown its hat in with Nike and developer Sumo Digital (makers of the awesome Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing Transformed) to produce the most definitive fitness game to date: Nike+ Kinect Training. We know they’re serious about it because they announced it on-stage at E3 (to a generally Kinect-apathetic crowd) and produced a terrific Windows Phone companion app to go along with it.
