Windows Phone Central Roundup: Financial Apps

The need to manage your finances is common and your Windows Phone can help you keep track of your expenses, earnings, and other financial tasks. This weeks roundup focuses on financial apps that are available in the Windows Phone Store.

To help save a little, we chose the top five free financial apps for the roundup and they include banking apps, a stock management app, and a personal budget manager. As always with our roundups, these apps only scratch the surface on what is available at the Windows Phone Store. If you have a favorite financial oriented app that isn't in this week's roundup, feel free to recommend it in the comments below.

The official BoA app gets feature parity with Android and iOS

The official Bank of America app for our Windows Phone has been available for some time now over at the Marketplace. The free banking app already had a healthy list of features including the ability to pay bills, transfer funds, review balances and find ATM/branch locations.

Bank of America has recently updated the app's features.  Now you can add Mobile Check Deposit and a few more features to the banking app.

The Bank of America app received a minor update yesterday, but it gives one new major function: it works! Yes, for nearly the last month, you've been rightly complaining that the BoA app would error out when you tried to log into one of your accounts, making this app pretty useless (less you just need an ATM finder).

While the app didn't add anything new and is still not Mango ready (c'mon folks, it's not that hard), at least its main function has been restored. From the changelog

  • Bug fixes
  • The same special characters (such as “/”) that are allowed in Online Banking Online IDs and Passcodes are now also accepted in Mobile Banking

Pick up the new version here in the marketplace.

We saw this way back in January and then we had an exclusive sneak peek a few weeks ago, but now the official Bank of America app is ready for your daily use. The app is quite smooth, fast loading and even has a svelte design, adhering to the Metro paradigm pretty well i.e. this isn't just a port. Here's the full description:

FEATURES

  • Pay bills and transfer funds
  • Review account balances
  • Find ATM and banking center locations using GPS, with no address input required
  • Feel secure with our industry-leading mobile security and our Online Banking Security Guarantee

MOBILE BANKING SECURITY

Anyways, give the app a spin here in the Marketplace and we'll see about doing a more in depth review later. Thanks, Steve K, for the heads up!

The Bank of America Windows Phone 7 app was first mentioned during Steve Ballmer's CES 2011 keynote address. We are now getting indications that the app is in the final stages of testing and should be available over at the Marketplace soon.

Not sure if this will be how the final product looks but based on the screen shots we've received, it appears the app will give you access to a wide range of banking information. Features appear to include checking account balances, paying bills, transferring funds and finding local branches.  Branch searches will pull up Bing Maps and map the nearest branches to your current location.  We're not sure if turn-by-turn directions will be a part of the search results.  The app looks nice and should be well received by Bank of America customers.

It's a nice looking app and hopefully other financial institutions will follow Bank of America's lead and bring more banking apps to the Windows Phone.
