bus

Keeping track of where public transport (mainly buses) currently are on routes can prove to be a troublesome task, especially if you're in an unknown location and aren't fully aware of local transport. This is where Windows Phone and travel apps come into play. We've covered a number of solutions previously, most catering for TFL (Transport for London), but we're now taking another look at Next Bus UK Live!

Nerde Bu Otobüs released for Windows Phone

Nerde Bu Otobüs (Turkish for "Where is my bus") is an Istanbul travel app that enables the user to keep track of transport routes across the city (using data provided by İETT - İstanbul Electric Tram and Funicular Company), much like the Dublin BusFinder app we covered last week. Some highlighted features:

  • Covers every bus route in the city.
  • Displays stops on individual routes
  • Displays routes on Bing Maps.
  • Estimated times of arrival are shown per-stop.

A must-have app (which is already available on iOS and Android) developed by university students for anyone who resides in (or is visiting) Istanbul. The app itself is in Turkish. You can download Nerde Bu Otobüs from the Marketplace for free.

Are you an Irish Windows Phone owner who resides in Dublin? Then BusFinder will be of great use to you in your installed app arsenal. Using Real Time Passenger Information (RTPI), the app displays up-to-date bus departure times across a number of routes throughout the city. BusFinder allows the user to add individual bus stops to a shortlist for convenient access and/or pin Live Tiles to the home screen that list the next three bus arrival times.

The app features Bing Map integration that clearly illustrates that particular bus route and what stops it covers, as well as the location of your current selected bus stop. Sporting a cartoony style interface with a Metro UI feel, BusFinder certainly stands out from the crowd. It will be hitting the Marketplace in the next couple of days, and will be available for €1.29 ($1.99/£1.49).

Check out the video of the app in action after the break.

Metro bus? Metro UI!

Everyone keeps pleading with Microsoft to advertise and push Windows Phone. Well, it looks like it is starting to happen (and we'll see more Monday). This shot was taken by Josh in downtown Bellevue, about a half mile from the Microsoft Store.

Not a bad idea for a metro bus we suppose. And it sure is eye-catching. Thanks Josh for the pic!
