Earlier this afternoon we harangued Microsoft about the recent Calendar app update for Windows Phone 8.1 that occurred on Monday, June 30. The update virtually broke the app for thousands of users by crashing whenever one adds a new appointment. Soon after our article, the app was unpublished from the Store preventing users who rely on auto-app updates from suffering the same fate.

Tonight, Microsoft's Joe Belfiore took to Twitter to address the situation, noting that a fix would be available very soon.

In Windows Phone 8.1 certain core services have changed in that they can be updated dynamically, bypassing the requirement for a full-fledged OS update. In theory, that should allow Microsoft to respond to the rapidly changing market by delivering faster paced, piecemeal updates. In reality, it also increases the chances that something may go wrong, and that is exactly what has happened.

Last night Microsoft pushed out a rare update for the calendar app, which was disentangled from the OS in 8.1, much like Xbox Music. The update brought the version number to 1.0.14127.246 and there was no changelog. Although it is exasperating to users to have to update an app without knowing what changed – or improved, it is even more vexing when that update breaks something.

Immediately following the update, people in comments started to complain that the attempting to create or edit an appointment caused the calendar app to crash. We have tested the update on various devices, including the Lumia 630 with the Lumia Cyan firmware, and they all have the same problem, rendering the calendar app a view-only tool.

Native Calendar app for Windows Phone 8.1 updated

The native Calendar app for Windows Phone 8.1 has just been updated. One of the bigger changes in Windows Phone 8.1 is the ability for some of the 'native' apps to be updated independently of the operating system. This allows for apps, like Calendar, to get updated as Microsoft sees fit and without any interference from carriers of OEMs. What's new in today's update?

Week View 8 is a calendar alternative for Windows Phone 8 that centers around a weekly view of the calendar. Week View 8 does have monthly and yearly views but the calendar app is focused on approaching things one week at a time.

While the pending Windows Phone 8.1 update will bring plenty of changes to our native Windows Phone calendar, many may still yearn for alternatives. In using Week View 8 for the past few days, it comes across as a capable Windows Phone calendar app and if you prefer a seven-day approach, Week View 8 is an option worth considering.

The Windows Phone native calendar. Let’s not mince words, it was quite…basic. Limited views, restricted features – Microsoft practically forced third-party developers to make alternatives, such as Simple Calendar or Cal. But even those had OS limitations due to constrained APIs.

With Windows Phone 8.1, Microsoft certainly gave the native calendar a much needed overhaul. We managed to miss it in our earlier coverage – not a shocker when you consider all the new changes – so we figured we would revisit this core OS feature and show you what’s new. Head past the break to catch our video!

Simple Calendar is a clean looking alternative to the native Windows Phone calendar. The Windows Phone 8 app uses your existing calendars, making setup easy and has an extremely user friendly interface. The calendar app ranks amongst the best we’ve seen and an update is now available, taking Simple Calendar to version 3.5.

The version 3.5 update for Simple Calendar mainly deals with the app’s Live Tile feature by adding two new styles and an option to show the last updated time for all wide tile styles.

Niche apps are always tough to write about. For some, they’re indispensable. To others, they don’t make sense. DayGlance is one of those apps, designed specifically for Lumia devices running Nokia’s Glance screen.

You may not have noticed, but Nokia’s Glance screen omits the date. Instead, it just shows the time and any notifications. While I understand the logic – keep it simple – for some, knowing the calendar day is important. Luckily DayGlance fills that gap by let users show the date in the notification bar.

However, sometimes you need something with a bit more power and options, something that goes above and beyond. Which is why the Windows Phone Store is filled with alternatives for those stock apps. Alternatives like Super Calendar, which was just updated. Let's check out what's new in version 1.6.

Some of the out-of-the-box apps on Windows Phone don’t see updates too frequently. Sure, you’ve got Xbox Music picking up some improvements with GDR2. But other than that, most apps don’t see refreshes or updates until the next version of Windows Phone hits. Which is why there are popular calendar apps in the Windows Phone Store. One of our recent favorites, Super Calendar, just picked up an update. Let’s check it out.
