Goodbye dancers. While the first ads for Microsoft's Surface tablet were geared around either dancing or comparing it with the iPad, when it comes to the Surface Pro 3, Microsoft has made the smart decision to highlight what it is that makes the tablet so great. From the keyboard to the display to the pen — with its easy activation of OneNote — this ad hits all the right points. It's not trying to be abstract, it's not trying to be cheeky, and it's not making the case that it should be compared to the iPad or any other tablet.

If there’s one thing we can all agree on is that Windows Phone has a perception problem, especially in the US and Canada. The phone hardware is often reviewed favorably, but critics tend to ding the OS for lack of apps. This so-called ‘app-gap’ has become less of problem as of late 2013, but the perception is still there. Also, MIA apps like Sonos don’t help either.

Nokia’s new ad, showcased on their Canadian YouTube channel, does a really good job of breaking it all down for the consumer. In fact, it’s one of the best we’ve seen. With bold bright graphics, the narrator talks about how impressive the Windows Phone store has become, highlighting things like UI design, Live Tiles, Windows Phone exclusive apps, and how major titles like Vine, Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram are all here already.

Now, to the joy of many, the official short is available to watch on the company’s YouTube channel. Just as our UK Editor, Richard Edmonds stated yesterday – it “will pull at your heart strings”.

Ads and commercials can be hit and miss with Microsoft. But we will say that within the last 18 months, they have had more wins than losses (see the Lumia 1020 recital or Surface 2 ones for evidence). Today, Redmond has pushed out a new teaser ad for the Xbox One and they seem to have hit all the right notes.

The commercial is titled ‘Xbox One: Invitation’ and features some real life celebrities in their elements, welcoming users into the action.  The ad starts with Titanfall in a board room (reminiscent of the ED-209 scene from Robocop) and it goes on to highlight FIFA 14, Forza 5 and Dead Rising 3 (which is especially hilarious).

And that’s the important message here: gaming.

Back at the end of April, Microsoft teamed up with well-known director Roman Coppola to release what was arguably one of the funniest smartphone commercials of the year. Featuring a wedding where everyone was trying to capture the moment, it quickly fell into a fight over who’s smartphone was better. In the end, Windows Phone (featuring the Lumia 920) was left standing with the slogan “Don’t Fight. Switch”.

It was short, funny and catchy, so much so that even non-Windows Phone fans gave it a nod of approval.

Now, a sequel to that commercial has been released with the Lumia 1020 taking center stage. The scenario this time happens at a children’s recital with parents eagerly trying to get the perfect photo. In the process, they shove each other out of the way to get closer to the stage with your typical chaos ensuing. The TV spot concludes with only two parents left and the wife asking “Why aren’t we getting closer?” to which the husband quips back “With the Nokia Lumia 1020, we have the best seats in the house”. He then zooms and re-frames a photo of his kin, nailing the shot.

Microsoft has been firing all cylinders lately when it comes to advertisements. The past six months we’ve seen the ads steadily getting better and better. Who can forget the wedding video with iPhone users pitted against Android folks? Lately they’ve had a series of videos that directly compare the iPad head-to-head against a variety of machines running Windows. Here’s one with the Lenovo Yoga.

Nokia has published the above video, showing how the average smartphone can't deal with low levels of light and capture those special moments on film. The Lumia 92x series of Windows Phones and the new Lumia 1020 sport OIS (optical image stabilisation), as well as software and optical improvements to make it possible to use the smartphone camera with little light.

While analysts are stating that Microsoft’s Surface isn’t doing as well as hoped, yesterday the Redmond technology company stated that they have “had a LOT of interest from businesses, schools and universities wanting to use Surface.” Today, Surface is currently available in 29 different markets and over 10,000 physical stores worldwide.

Three major announcement about Surfaces availability in the USA, commercial partnerships, and education were announced.

In a very late breaking story, the site WinP.cn is reporting that a new ad from China Mobile shows the soon-to-be-announced Huawei Ascend W2 in video. The image appears to match up with those shown by @evleaks

The ad itself is not for the W2 itself, as numerous other Samsung phones are shown too. Instead, this appears to be an ad for the TD-SCDMA based China Mobile, which then uses several smartphones to bolster its image as leading network provider.

Microsoft is once again making fun of Apple’s iPad in its latest commercial; this time, it takes on Dell’s XPS 10 Windows RT Tablet.

The advertisement starts out by picking on the iPad’s home screen; specifically the fact that you can’t zoom around and see an overview of your content. The Apple tablet screams “Ouch” in protest as a user tries to pinch the view unsuccessfully.

For the past few weeks, Microsoft has been pushing new television advertisements that mock the iPad and praise the benefits of Windows 8 and OEM's hardware. Now the boys in Redmond have launched a companion site for their ads.

The new site allows consumers to compare Apple's 64 GB iPad (4th generation) against the ASUS VivoTab Smart, Dell XPS 10, HP ENVY x2, and Microsoft Surface RT. Using the site's comparison chart you can than compare thinness, battery life, weight, display size, multitasking, pricing, and expandability.

Microsoft isn't letting up on its release of commercials shunning the iPad and touting its own Windows RT Tablets.

The latest commercial from Redmond compares the thin form factor of the ASUS VivoTab (.32 inches) vs. the iPad’s .37 inches. Microsoft also doesn’t forget to point out the weight of the lighter ASUS tablet (1.16 lbs.) vs. the iPad’s 1.44 lbs.

Microsoft has been busy pushing out commercials that show their latest operating system can do more than just play games. The latest ad from Redmond doesn’t just put on a suit and tie to strut its work capabilities, it makes fun of Apple’s iPad in the process.

The commercial opens with a side by side of ASUS’s VivoTab and the world famous fruit tablet. Microsoft’s minimalist approach is very reminiscent of Apple’s commercials and makes it clear that this is a parody right down to the musical chopstick routine.

We’ve heard a lot of discussion from users, mostly anecdotal, about their local carriers and how well they are promoting Windows Phone in the store. Some are horror stories, with reps pushing Android or the iPhone while often there are great experiences too.

Telstra though as evidently set the bar with their in-store advisements.

In fact, it’s so good that Microsoft has made a video in conjunction with the popular carrier to highlight their effort. It’s quite the achievement to see Windows Phone promoted in such a way and while US carriers like AT&T and Verizon are getting serious about putting Windows Phone front and center, we think Telstra here sets a great example.

Everyone has witnessed a slightly irritating child in the public (or perhaps you're the parent of one?), but an advertisement published on the Windows Phone UK YouTube account shows exactly how to handle such a situation. The point of the video? When handed a Windows Phone, said child soon hushes and gets on with firing some birds at pigs and all the rest.
