Extras + Info

Extras + Info for Lumia Windows Phones has once again been updated, but the same changelog exists and we can only spot small bumps in version numbers for system settings. Some of Microsoft's new Lumia system apps were inherited through its purchase of Nokia's mobile devices division and are updated regularly. The issue is with each release it's not always clear what each version brings to the table.

Microsoft Mobile (previously the hardware division at Nokia) has released new versions for a number of system apps available for Lumia Windows Phones. Extras + Info and Call + SMS Filter are joined by Display and Device Hub, each receiving a new version with unknown changes due to the lack of up-to-date changelogs.

We’ve noted in the past that despite the Lumia 1520 being one of our favorite Lumias to date, like everything in the world of technology it had a few nits that bothered us.

One of those was the often reported ‘screen sensitivity’ complaint, where scrolling with the display would frequently result in a tap. Think of scrolling through your emails and instead of scrolling down, you open a message up unintendedly. Another example would be on 6tag, the double-tap to like feature of the app would be activated when just swiping through photos.

Recent updates by Nokia may reveal forthcoming additions to expand Lumia functionality for users

Nokia has been churning out quite a few updates lately for its Lumia Windows Phones, especially for those with the Amber update. The last few system app changes, notably Extras + Info yesterday and Display + Touch for today, simply moved those settings into their own categories.

While that is seen as a fix for discoverability, there are few other deviations that have been noticed as well that may be a sign of things to come.

Starting with the Windows Phone 8 GDR2 and Nokia Amber updates, Nokia was able to offer new options for the Lumia line, including the coveted Glance screen and Touch features. Glance enabled the onscreen clock with vibration and charging alerts, while Touch allows users to modify screen sensitivity.

Both features are essential in getting the premium Nokia experience, but there was one problem: discoverability. In order for a new customer to learn about those features, they would have to do some deep digging in the myriad of options under Settings.

Well today, that is no more.

Yesterday we saw two app updates from Nokia including HERE Drive+ and HERE Maps. Today they’re bumping some system apps. But no need to rush as these are for the more benign Feedback to Nokia and Extras + Info sections, not bringing anything too new or exciting to the table as far as we can tell.

First up is Feedback to Nokia. This little guy allows you to rate your phone and send your thoughts about your Lumia right to Nokia for their consideration. With version 2.5.0.2 of the app, we noticed that when compared to our older iteration it now has a pivot for the Nokia Improvement Program and the option to opt in or out along with an explanation of what it is (you can find more info on their website).

Nokia is still tinkering with their system apps on their Windows Phone 8 Lumias. The app Extras + Info, which is a meta-app for Accessory agent, Feedback to Nokia, Nokia First Use Experience and Warranty registration, controls a lot of behind the scene features for the Lumia and as such, are considered to be relatively important.

Like all previous system updates from Nokia, we’re unsure of what the changes are with this rollout. For all we know, they gave language support in Samoa. Or they fixed a major bug.
