facebook

Rumors are circulating that Facebook is looking to purchase instant messaging mavens WhatsApp. No pricing of the acquisition or even confirmation of talks have been revealed, but TechCrunch seems convinced that something is brewing between the two companies.

Facebook famously bought Instagram for $1B not too long ago, although that number is mostly reflected in now devalued stock options. It’s not clear why Facebook would buy WhatsApp but there are a few possibilities, including augmenting or even gutting the unreliable Facebook Chat and there is of course the legion of WhatsApps users (who never fail to tell us there is an update for the app on Windows Phone, more on the below).

Microsoft has changed the icon used on Facebook for submissions published from a Windows Phone to the social network. We've grown accustomed to seeing a red Windows logo next to any status we send from the handset (via the People Hub), but now the new Windows logo in a purple theme replaces the dated branding. It certainly looks refreshing, but that's always the case with a visual change.

Microsoft has also started to make use of the Facebook profile it has for the Surface Windows tablet family. Accumulating 6,000 likes already, the page has mirrored posts that were found on the recently deployed Twitter account, so nothing new here, but it's worth adding this account to the list of social profiles followed.

We expect to see more information added to both this account and the Twitter profile in the coming days, as well as competitions for hardware to be given away at a later date.

We've had our fair share of Windows Phone app and game roundups here at WPCentral.  The other day Nokia created their own app roundup by asking visitors to their Facebook page to name their favorite Nokia Lumia app. Recommendations quickly filled the Facebook post and after tallying the responses, the results were posted over at Conversations Nokia.

The list was diverse and not necessarily limited to Nokia apps. Here are the top recommendations from Nokia's straw poll.

Missing or just hiding?

We’ve continued to document the small issues plaguing the Windows Phone Store as of late and we want to clear up one that we’re getting a lot of tips on: missing apps.

The issue comes up when you try to search for certain apps, namely Facebook, Groupon and WhatsApp for some of you. In short, they’re missing from search results and therefore you can’t download them.

But we should point out that all of the direct-links to those apps still work and will allow you to download the program. In fact, we’ll list the direct links for you down below.

Ran across a Facebook posting by Windows Phone saying "Our Live Tiles may be trying to tell us something". The posting pictures a magenta AT&T Nokia Lumia 900 with the Phone Tile is displaying "10", the Linked Inbox an "11" and the Messaging Tile a "12".

The obvious thought is October 11, 2012, which is today. But so far all is quiet on the AT&T news front.  But many format their dates day/month/year which would put the date November 10, 2012. Up until this little riddle, the strong school of thought has the new Lumias landing on Sunday, November 4th. Which fits AT&T's launch habits (the 10th is the following Saturday).

Could this be the new launch date for the AT&T Lumia 920 and 820? Or are we reading too much into things and the Live Tiles simply telling us that it's 54 degrees in Redmond?

We'll poke around and see what we can come up with but in the meantime, there's a discussion going on over in the WPCentral Forums on what this riddle could mean. Feel free to chime in and let us know your guess.

Did you know those using Facebook apps on their mobile devices can access your email address even if it's not displayed on your profile when checking the website? Most users of the social network don't.

Headlines have continuously attacked Facebook due to privacy concerns, confusing account settings and other monstrosities, but today we'll look at a quick tip on how to prevent your email address being available to contacts who can view your profile.

Just because your personal email address isn't viewable on the website when checking your profile via a web browser, don't be fooled into believing your friend's Windows Phone won't pull it down to his (or her) contact list. By default, it seems Facebook's settings are configured so email addresses are invisible to the 'timeline' but are still available and accessible by friends. So how does one configure email settings on Facebook to prevent them being accessed?

To the left, Twitter and to the right, reportedly Facebook notifications

Looks like Nokia’s New York City announcement is the gift that keeps on giving. Such is the case from the newly observed Twitter and Facebook notifications on the Lock screen during the introduction of the wireless charging part of the presentation. (Although Twitter is clear as day for us, we're still  not sure about the Facebook one--it's quite hard to tell.)

Wheel of Wealth is a Wheel of Fortune styled game for your Windows Phone. The game features local play as well as an online multi-player option. Wheel of Wealth is a fun time waster and the game has been updated to version 2.0.

The update focuses on two key areas brought to the developers attention by Wheel of Wealth users; player registration and game speed. Players weren't too eager to cough up their email address and opted for the offline game mode. To help make registration easier and more private, you can now login to play the online game through your Facebook account.

Windows Phone App Review: Memento

Memento is a photography app for your Windows Phone that lets you apply one of nine film effects to your photographs. Memento has a simple, straight forward interface, some cool filters but does have room for improvement.

The main menu offers options to take a picture to edit, load a picture to edit, view your gallery (images already tweaked) and tap into Memento's settings. Settings are limited to turning on/off the app's Facebook integration.

If you opt to take a picture, the app will launch your Windows Phone camera app and return once you accept the new image. If you choose to apply the effects to an existing photo, just pick the image out from your Pictures Hub and you're in business.

Want school supplies with a cool surprise? Of course you do. Microsoft has kicked off the "Cool is in Session" sweepstake on its Facebook page, which sports some interesting prizes. Like all sweepstakes on Facebook, you'll need an account and be able to "like" Microsoft's page (if not done so already) to access the entry form with more details.

Is the Bing Social sidebar finally coming to the UK?

It seems that the Bing UK team are beginning to (or are testing a potential) rollout of the design refresh we've seen in the US. Unfortunately, while we can clearly see a familiar login element, we are not receiving the actual sidebar itself. Once Bing UK was loaded, we could login via Windows Live and subsequently connect to Facebook.

After logging in was achieved, and Facebook accounts were connected, once loading search results we were presented with a new look, as well as our name (with drop down arrow for menu options) accompanied by a settings icon. Rewind back to the release of the Bing US design refresh and you'll see something similar (see below screencap) to what we currently have with Bing UK.

We could well be on the verge of an identical design refresh with further social integration, which the US has enjoyed for some time. Have you noticed anything changing on Bing UK? Let us know in the comments.

Thanks, Louis, for the heads up!

As many of you may have noticed, two somewhat major apps for Windows Phone received updates in the last 24 hours, so we’ll pass on the news in case you missed it.

First up is Facebook, which has been receiving quite a few updates lately, generally a good sign…unless you consider everything so broke that it needs even more fixing. The last update was just a week ago for version 2.6 and now version 2.7  has landed in the Marketplace bringing with it some new fixes though no new features:

  • Notifications now show updated time instead of created time
  • Corrected thumbnail display on likes
  • Now respecting except clause on posts with custom privacy settings

That’s nothing terribly exciting though if you were experiencing any of those issues, hopefully you’ll be a bit pleased with the update.

Next up is Amazon’s Kindle ebook app. That app is now on version 1.2 which shows you how often that one gets updated (seriously, it has had one update in the last year). The good news here is this update is more significant:

  • Mango compliant including fast app switching, multi-tasking
  • Available in more regions, including Japan, Portugal, Brazil, Poland, Sweden and presumably other areas too [Forum]
  • Books are pinnable to start screen with 2 sided Live Tile

That’s some pretty cool stuff by Amazon and we’re hear they’re being quite proactive with customer support, see this post about a personal phone call from the company.

Should you wish to grab either app, you can pick up the official Facebook app here and the Amazon Kindle app here in the Windows Phone Marketplace. Thanks, everyone, for the tips and sab742 for the images

Say what you will about the official Facebook app for Windows Phone but they are trying hard to fix things and improve it. Rapidly too.

Version 2.6 just landed in the Marketplace and you can go get it now. Don't expect a slathering of new features like the last few updates but instead it addresses a couple of bug fixes that many of you have been sending into them. These include:

  1. An image posted to a group was appearing on your own wall rather than the group
  2. Users with custom privacy settings set as their default were having their updates created with "Only Me" permissions

Nothing thrilling but hey, at least they're listening and tweaking things with rather a quick turn around. You can grab the latest version of Facebook here in the Windows Phone Marketplace.

We have received a number of tips that the Windows Phone Facebook app and People Hub integration are not working. There are reports of the Facebook app not loading, passwords not being accepted and status updates not refreshing.  So far hard resets, deleting the account and re-installing, and tinkering with Windows Live permissions have been tried with no success. Manually syncing the Facebook account in the Windows Phone settings also fails to correct the issue.

While we would like to give you a reason for the problems but we are experiencing the same issues and have not heard of a cause. Some have suggested it may be an API issue with Facebook.  On my end, I've been watching the load screen for the Facebook app pass the four dots across the screen for the past five minutes.  And the last Facebook updates in the Peoples Hub was from last night.

If you feel like venting, feel free to join the Windows Phone Central Forums discussion here or sound off in the comments. Just remember as you express your frustrations that this is a family friendly site. Should a solution or reason for this problem come about, we'll be sure to pass it on.

Thanks, everyone, for the tips!
