Golf

Just Hot Air is a golf-styled game for Windows Phone 8 that has you knocking around a small creature instead of a golf ball with the courses laid out more like a game of putt-putt golf.

It is an odd sort of game in that each hole or level of play has a limited number of strokes (known as kicks in the game) and if you go over the limit, the little creature explodes much like a balloon filled with too much hot air.  Graphics are nice, game play challenging but there just seems to be something missing with Just Hot Air to get it over the hump and be a rather attractive Windows Phone game.

Last year, Windows Phone Central brought you an exclusive interview about a Windows Phone 8 title called Fairway Solitaire from Big Fish Games (and ported by Babaroga). Fairway is actually one of the games that Microsoft used during their Windows Phone 8 reveal event to exemplify how quick and easy porting from iOS to Windows Phone 8 can be. Funny thing is: Fairway Solitaire was slated to be a launch window game for the new mobile OS, but it has actually taken far longer than to port.

As a matter of fact, Big Fish Games has just published Fairway Solitaire for both Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 in celebration of E3 2013. The bad news is they published it as an indie title instead of an Xbox game as originally planned. But on the happy side, Fairway plays great and we’ve got an exclusive video in which Big Fish’s Patrick Wylie walks us through the game’s features. Check it out after the break!

Windows Phone Central Game Roundup: Golf
Windows Phone Central Game Roundup: Golf Games

There's a small golf tournament going on over in Augusta, Georgia this week where one golfer will take home a coveted Green Jacket (and a healthy pay check).  In honor of this event, we felt that a roundup of golf games would be fitting.  Plus the weather's getting warmer and if your a golfer stuck in the office, these games might help take the edge off the need to hit the links.

Sure you have Shotly Golf to help you keep score and find courses. Then there's Golf Live to help you keep up with all the golf news out there. This roundup deals with golf games for your Windows Phone. Everything from a wonderfully animated Xbox title to a challenging round of golf featuring a stick man.  We even throw in a putt-putt golf game for those who prefer to putt around over dealing with fairways and roughs.

Lets Golf 2 is a popular Xbox Windows Phone game that has evidently had some installation issues with Windows Phone 8 devices. Issues that caused the installation process to crash leaving Windows Phone 8 users in the club house.

Whatever the issue, Gameloft has found the bug, squashed it and now Lets Golf 2 can be installed without problems on your Windows Phone 8 devices. We've successfully installed the game on both the Nokia Lumia 920 and HTC 8X. However, the 8X took a significantly longer time to install (over five minutes).

Windows Phone Game Review: Bonsai Golf Coral

Bonsai Golf is one of the more artistically rendered golf games for your Windows Phone. Bonsai Golf Coral takes the course continues the artistic nature of Bonsai golf taking you to an underwater setting, playing golf around colorful coral formations.

Bonsai Golf Coral isn't just a nice looking golf course. While the holes are nicely drawn up, they can be challenging as well.  Bonsai Golf Coral may not be your traditional game of golf for your Windows Phone but it can be an entertaining way to pass the time with.

Windows Phone Game Roundup: FORE!

Windows Phone Central's Roundup of Golf Games

The Open Championship is this week in sunny Lancashire, England. The Royal Lytham and St. Annes Golf Club is hosting the Open and in honor of the Championship, this week's round-up is dialed into golf games for your Windows Phone.

We've got an Xbox Live title, a few miniature golf courses, a pirate and for good measure we toss in a golf app that should be on every duffer's Windows Phone. As always, if a title doesn't make it to the roundup it shouldn't reflect poorly on things. If we missed one, chime in below in the comments and let us know.

Looks like it's a big week for Nokia. First they release the beta for City Lens and now The Caddie + (aka Executive Caddie) is available for download, exclusively for Nokia users. And it too features some augmented reality functionality on board.

We've covered the popular Vertisan app extensively here at WPCentral earlier showing the first screenshots as well as a demonstration of the built-in Augmented Reality function called GolfScope.

The app is an amazing win for serious golfers out there as it features some really great tools all wrapped up in a souped up, elegant little package:

  • Tournament scoring
  • Real-time leader boards
  • Group heckling with toast notifications
  • Additional social features
  • Themes to match the Lumias, including Cyan, Magenta, White and Nokia Blue

You also get the usual assortment of geolocation, mapping, golf buddies and groups, round and scoring analysis, handicap calculation...it really has it all.

Pick up The Caddie + now for free (no ads) in the Nokia Collection. You can also click this Marketplace link from your Lumia phone or scan the QR code below. Thanks, Badranath17, for the tip

A few weeks ago we broke the news that Executive Caddie, the premier and highly rated golfing assistance app for Windows Phone, was getting a makeover and an upgrade for the Nokia Collection. That means that if you own a Lumia 610, 700, 800 or the big 900 you're entitled to a custom version of the app made for your phone for free.

At the time we reported on those "exclusive" features for Executive Caddie +:

  • Tournament scoring
  • Real-time leaderboards
  • Group heckling with toast notifications
  • Additional social features
  • Themes to match the Lumias, including Cyan, Magenta, White and Nokia Blue

But the biggy was an augmented reality tool called Golfscope described as

"...an augmented reality view of players on the golf course with live player and scorecard information. Basically, a player can point his phone at any other player on the course and the player’s avatar and round summary will appear in the overlay. The overlay can be tapped to see the other player’s scores, stats, and other round information in real-time. GolfScope is a patent pending technology."

We promised we'd show you what that actually looks like and as you can see in the video above, GolfScope is ready to go. We should note that what you see in that video is not a simulation, that's an actual live demonstration of GolfScope from a Nokia Lumia 900 that has vide-out capabilities (yeah, devs get some great tools).

We're expecting the exclusive Nokia version of Executive Caddie + to land in the Nokia Collection in a few weeks. We'll keep you posted. In the meantime, if you golf and don't have a Lumia you can still get the regular Executive Caddie for free in the Marketplace.

Last week we reported on the possibility of the popular and highly rated golfing app Executive Caddie coming to the Nokia Collection in the Marketplace. Today, WPCentral can confirm that this is indeed correct and we'll see a new edition, called Executive Caddie +, headed to Lumia devices in the first two-weeks of May. What's more, we have all the details below including exclusive screenshots.

Boasting the "largest and most accurate Golf Course Database in the World", the app is very well done and has even won a Windows Phone app challenge. Evidently it's so good, Nokia decided to add them to their growing list of exclusive and unique apps for Lumia phones, including the popular Lumia 900.

Executive Caddie + builds off of the current app in the Marketplace (available for free) but adds some new and unique features, including:

  • Tournament scoring
  • Real-time leaderboards
  • Group heckling with toast notifications
  • Additional social features
  • Themes to match the Lumias, including Cyan, Magenta, White and Nokia Blue

But perhaps the coolest feature is this one: GolfScope. GolfScope is described as

We're not even golfers here and even we're impressed with that feature. We'll have a first look at those augmented-reality shots come Monday, so tune back here at WPCentral if you want to check them out.

One thing we're constantly impressed with at Nokia is their ability to sniff out talent and bring that to their customers. Executive Caddie + looks to be another great find for them and should help sell the phone for those business and golf-fiends out there. Seems like a great match to us.

Fear not if you don't have a Nokia Lumia Windows Phone though, you can still download the regular Executive Caddie for free here in the Marketplace.

Well, well, well. Colour us surprised (pun intended) with what the above image could point to, but if it holds true we could see the Executive Caddie heading to the Nokia Collection of OEM apps. Of course, should this happen, we'd expect to see the original app remain available for all Windows Phone owners, but it would be interesting to see unique variants of the app (available for free) tied to which Lumia 900 you purchase.

Executive Caddie is a popular golf app on the Windows Phone Marketplace, and rightfully so as it's quite simply gorgeous. Functionality includes highly accurate golf course database, on-course GPS and scorecard functionality (for up to four golfers). Reviews have been positive from users and it has been with us since the beginning (released in December 2010). Microsoft has reportedly given the developers the nod with eligibility for a "Showcase App" promotion. It would seem as though Nokia has caught wind of this positive aura.

The above photo shows two Lumia 900s running Executive Caddie with a unique theme / colour scheme that matches the device pigmentation. The Lumia 800 in the middle is using the default app that's currently available on the Marketplace. Could we be seeing exclusive versions of the app hitting the Nokia Collection or just an updated version? Could well be, and perhaps there'll be a few extra features thrown in for good measure.

On a humorous side note: someone rescue the poor Lumia 800 being patronised by size sitting in the middle. Executive Caddie is available on the Markeplace for free (usually $29.99), which has had its price tag slashed since Christmas.

Thanks Michael for the heads up and the image!

Enjoy golf? Own a Windows Phone? Fancy saving $30 on a top golf app available on the platform? Executive Caddie, winner of the Windows Phone App Challenge, has had its price slashed to $0 and is within reach for anyone on a tight budget after the present purchasing spree. The 20 year old golf analysis software is a golfer's best friend when aiming for the hole-in-one.

The Windows Phone app sports a highly accurate golf course database, on-course GPS and scorecard functionality (for up to four golfers). The GPS assistance boasts some impressive features:

  • Easily see distance to front, back, and center of the green.
  • Easily see layup distance to the 100, 150, and 200.
  • Aerial Map View showing the entire course layout.
  • Map View fairway markers and rings for the 100, 150, and 200.
  • Waypoints/markers for front, back, center, layups, bunkers, hazards, etc.
  • Zoom to your current position, the green, or the fairway.

You can download Executive Caddie from the Marketplace for absolutely nothing over the festive holiday (normally $30).

Windows Phone Xbox Live Review: Let's Golf 2

Gameloft is a true heavy hitter in the mobile games arena. They’ve made a business of creating mobile equivalents of popular console games. Halo, Final Fantasy, and even World of Warcraft have received the sincerely flattering clone treatment – though sadly not for Windows Phone. Gameloft has finally thrown us a bone, though, with Let’s Golf 2. Based on Sony’s long-running Hot Shots Golf series, Let’s Golf 2 has just about everything you could want in a golf game (except for multiplayer).

Over the weekend, the makers of Ghostscape announced that it’s coming to Xbox Live on November 30. But that still left us wondering about the Live releases for this week and next week. We can stop contemplating this week’s release at least, as it turns out to be Let’s Golf 2 from Gameloft.

First revealed during E3 in June, Let’s Golf 2 is a port of the popular iPhone game. It’s got attractive and stylized 3D graphics (based on Sony’s Hot Shots Golf series), 8 different golfers, and 6 courses containing a total of 108 holes in total. That’s a lot of golfing!

Let’s Golf 2’s materialization raises hopes that Gameloft’s other announced title, the 3D stealth shooter Splinter Cell: Conviction might not be too far off. However, parental controls haven’t materialized yet and the game is rated M, so I wouldn’t expect it before that feature is added to the OS.

Let’s Golf 2 arrives on Wednesday, November 16. We don’t have a price yet, but we’ll update with one tomorrow (my money’s on $4.99).

Thanks to DarkSynopsis for the tip!

Monkey Mini Golf - Review

There simply is not enough golf games over at the Windows Phone Marketplace. But things are looking better with the release of Monkey Mini-Golf.

While it's a miniature golf game (nothing wrong with that but would it be so bad to have an 18 hole EA Sports golf game?), it has a certain appeal to it. Graphically, it reminds me a lot of the Donkey Kong games that hit later in that titles lifespan. The miniature golf holes do have a degree of challenge to them and gaming controls are simple, yet effective.

To read more on Monkey Mini Golf, ease on past the break.

Fable Coin Golf - Review

The Xbox game Fable has been around for years, dating back to the first generation Xbox consoles.  It is a widely popular game (it even has its own Wiki Page) that is on its third installment (fourth if you count the Lost Chapters) and has now come to your Windows Phone.  Well, in a manner of speaking.

Fable Coin Golf is a companion game to the XBox 360 console game and incorporates several elements of Fable III in a table top golf game.  The object, as described in the Marketplace, is to "rid the land of evil and conquer each area by getting your Hero Puck into the Pillar of Light in as few shots as possible." The evil in which is spoken of includes characters from the video game including Hobbes, Balvarines, Hollow Men and other colorful characters who are intent on destroying you.

Fable Coin Golf is a wonderfully presented game that has challenging moments that border on being a pain. To find out more about this XBox Live game for your Windows Phone, slide on past the break.

Putt in Golf - Review

7.1.M is offering a really nice looking putt-putt golf game for your Windows Phone. Putt in Golf is an 18 hole, miniature golf game for the Windows Phone 7 platform.

While not an XBox Live game, Putt in Golf will allow you to upload your scores to an online leader board to see how well you've done against other duffers.

Read more about Putt in Golf after the break.
