Top Transit Apps for your Windows Phone

Windows Phone Central App Roundup: Transit Apps

Our Windows Phones have the potential to deliver vast amounts of information to our hands that can help our day-to-day lives easier. For many, being able to check in on mass transit schedules and routes from our Windows Phones can make getting around while traveling or when using your local services a lot easier.

While several of your navigation apps will have the ability to chart mass transit, this week’s Windows Phone Central app roundup will focus on apps that deal solely with mass transit. We will touch on three of the top rated transit apps in the Windows Phone Store that are not necessarily tied down to one city or transit system. And just to cover all the bases we'll mention a few that are more system or city specific.

Every week we strive to bring you the latest when it comes to new apps and app updates in the Windows Phone Store. But no matter how hard you try, you might miss out on some cool apps. A lot can happen in a week, so we’re going to start taking Saturdays to sit back, relax, and go over some of the highlights when it comes to the weekly changes in the Windows Phone Store.

We’re going to highlight noteworthy apps that are either new or received a new update during the week. We’ll work on tweaking this column based on your feedback. Either way, let’s look at this past week in apps.

Nokia has pulled the updates for HERE Drive and Transit due to some issues consumers have been experiencing when attempting to install the latest versions. Nokia has today announced that HERE Drive+, which has been in a beta for what seems like forever, will be made available for all Windows Phone 8 smartphones. For the time being, only HERE Drive is available for non-Nokia Windows Phone hardware. This is welcomed news for everyone who owns a Windows Phone not manufactured by the Finnish company.

HERE Transit (formerly Nokia Transit), which helps you get from point A to point B using public transportation, got a nice little update today. In addition to the usual bug fixes, it also adds some handy new features.

This latest version now lets you view a list of local stations on a map. It also works nicely with HERE Maps, letting you switch between it and HERE Transit in the Journey Planner section. Got some favorite locations in HERE Maps or HERE Drive? Now you can access them through Transit too. It's great to see Nokia tying their suite of HERE applications closer together like a pretty pink bow.

Nokia has released a number of updates for the company's collection of HERE apps. HERE Drive+ Beta, Maps, Transit and City Lens have each received a minor bump. While no change log appears to be available for any of the mentioned Windows Phone apps, we can speculate that performance and minor improvements have been applied.

A lot of folks running Windows Phone on an HTC or Samsung device have bemoaned at the some of the exclusive apps Nokia makes available only to their own Lumia line. While it makes sense for Nokia to differentiate themselves, we know that sting from feeling left out. No pouting today though, Nokia now is letting folks on non-Lumia devices get some more HERE action.

Previously HERE Drive Beta was available to everyone, but now you can add HERE Maps and HERE Transit to the list of apps.

Stretch your memory muscle way back to November, that’s when we told you about Nokia rebranding their mapping platform to HERE (sigh, do I always have to type it like that?). At the time they also announced LiveSight, an enhanced version of their augmented reality experience.

Today at Mobile World Congress, that rebranding effort is taking shape on their offerings for Windows Phone. Nokia has reintroduced some of our olds friends, we have HERE Maps, HERE Drive (with regional navigation), HERE Drive + (with global navigation), HERE Transit and HERE City Lens. Basically killer updates to the apps you’ve already been enjoying.
