A few days ago, it was widely reported that HTC is repositioning their flagship One M8 as a new Windows Phone dubbed "One (W8) for Windows." The phone may be the same as the hot selling Android phone, but with Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 on board and destined for Verizon.

Windows Phone Central reported the phone could go on sale as early as August 21 and coincidentally enough, HTC has sent out limited press invites for August 19 right in New York City. No clues or themes were present on the invite, though the timing is suspect.

Reports that HTC would be reconfiguring their popular Android based One M8 for Windows Phone have been circulating for months with Verizon as the flag bearer, but details of the device – and release – are now coming into focus. Tonight, Engadget is reporting that the name of the phone is called "One (M8) for Windows," which is a little awkward, although if you drop the M8 it has a nice ring to it.

Engadget reports that they phone should launch by on "Verizon during the third quarter, or no later than the end of September" although our sources tell us that Microsoft Stores have a planning date of August 20 with a launch on the 21st. The off-contract, full price of the phone is listed at $610 with on-contract price most likely nearing $199. The name is also confirmed as "One (M8) for Windows" according to documents we have seen.

Microsoft is hinting strongly that HTC may finally be ready to launch a new Windows Phone product, after months of Internet rumors that such a device is in the works. Speaking to reporters after Microsoft's Computex 2014 keynote address earlier today, Nick Parker, the company's vice president of OEM partners, answered a question about manufactoring partners with this response:

We'll be the first to say that we wish HTC would take its new One (M8) Android device and slap Windows Phone on it. It's a truly beautiful smartphone, just read Android Central's in-depth review of the device to get an idea how it looks. We ran a quick poll yesterday asking if you would like to see a Windows Phone version, but rumors are suggesting one may be in the works.

In case you still didn’t agree that Windows Phone is the third ecosystem in the smartphone industry, the latest validation comes from comScore’s report of the U.S. smartphone subscriber market share ending January 2014.

While Blackberry's market share is on the decline, Microsoft held steady and found themselves holding the third spot in the latest survey behind Android and Apple.

A real quick analysis of today’s announcements by Microsoft, specifically in regards to Windows Phone, shows that Microsoft is loosening the belt on their mobile OS. Back when Windows Phone 7 Series was announced at this very event four years ago, Microsoft had set very strict hardware requirements in an effort to keep the user experience consistent and ensure a quality experience.

That’s a very different approach from Android, which has a more ‘anything goes’ method for hardware, resulting in proliferation of Android throughout the mobile market. Apple, of course does the opposite: they only make their own hardware, so there are no manufacturer opportunities.

Even though Microsoft has stated numerous times that all current Windows Phone 8 handsets should be eligible for ‘future OS upgrades’, referring presumably to Windows Phone 8.1, the question if OEMs are as committed is a concern. Specifically if HTC (or even Samsung) are still willing to support 8.1, expected to be announced in April.

Today, HTC took to Reddit for an AMA, or Ask Me Anything, where questions were fielded from the audience about Android. However, a member of the audience asked HTC directly if they were “done” with Windows Phone.

A German Court has ruled in favor of Nokia in litigation against HTC for patent infringement.  The Munich I Regional Court handed Nokia a Germany-wide patent injunction against all HTC Android devices (including the HTC One) that infringes on Nokia’s patent on connecting devices over NFC or Bluetooth to transfer resource information such as a URL (European Patent 1148681).

Under German law, HTC can appeal this ruling but must convince an Appeals Court that they are “more likely than not” to succeed with the appeal.  In the meantime, Nokia can choose to enforce the injunction on a provisional basis by posting a $400 million Euro (a little over $552 million U.S.) bond just in case HTC wins the appeal.  This would include a recall of infringing devices from resellers and commercial users.

Believe it or not the Windows Phone Update 3 (also known as GDR3) is being pushed out to the Sprint HTC 8XT.

We were skeptical at first but in checking Sprint's Support Site for the 8XT, the update is listed as clear as day. Update version 2.12.651.02 is described as containing streaming audio improvements, accessibility improvements and Microsoft's GDR3 release.
