We haven't forgotten all you Alltel customers out there in the recent release of HTC devices. (See Touch Pro on Sprint and the Touch Fuze (this week, we hope) on AT&T.)

The Touch Diamond has been available for a couple of days now. You'll pay $249.99 after the usual contract discount and mail-in rebate. And with the Verizon-Alltel deal getting the go-ahead from the Justice Department — provided Verizon sells off some its assets first — you'd probably better pick this up before the Big V does some of its famous device neutering.

We're also still expecting the Touch Pro. A little birdie tells us it should be released on or about Nov. 14. Price reportedly could be $100 higher than the Diamond, but that'd leave it $50 more than Sprint is asking for the Touch Pro. So we'll wait and see on that one.

A look at the Treo Pro bootloader

We were pretty sure that HTC was the manufacturer for the Treo Pro even before it was confirmed. Here's a little more inside baseball.

TreoProTricks has published the key sequence to enter the bootloader, which is the gateway into the bowels of the phone. When we talk about applying rom updates on an HTC device, the bootloader's where the action is. There we learn a few things:

  1. The HTC codename for the Treo Pro is PANT100, presumably for "Panther." (The Treo 750 is "Cheetah.")
  2. The Treo Pro is, in fact, a full-on HTC device with the Palm branding and customizations, as was the Treo 750.
  3. If you can get to the bootloader, it's a huge step toward loading custom roms.

The bootloader is not a toy (he types as he shakes his finger). And you can't just load any rom onto your phone — there are a few security checkpoints in place. But once/if the folks at the various Treo hackery sites get up and running, we could see some very cool things in the Treo Pro's future.

Sprint Touch Pro is officially official

The launch date for Sprint's HTC Touch pro has bounced around more than election poll numbers. (See here, here and here.) Case in point: Our own HobbesIsReal managed to snag one last week and posted his 24-hour impressions.

But we're happy to say that the Touch Pro now is officially officially here. It's up on Sprint's Web site and everything. That's the good news.

The bad news is that it's gonna cost you. The $579.99 list price is knocked down to $399.99 after "instant savings." And you can take another $100 off that with a mail-in rebate. But for that to kick in, you have to sign up for an "everything" plan (starting at $99 a month), a "Data Premier" add-on or "PRO Pack" add-on. That's SOP for Sprint these days, but be forewarned anyway. And by many accounts, you get your money's worth, GPS lag notwithstanding.

Look for our full-on review here in the next week or so as HobbesIsReal puts the Touch Pro through its paces.

Thar she blows! The white Diamond!

Well, look at that. We'd heard rumors that there was a white HTC Touch Diamond roaming the waters of Europe, and it looks like someone's managed to capture the elusive beast, albeit chained to a display.

Dutch site jouw Mobiel (translation) has the lowdown on the Touch Diamond Ice White, which is said to be on sale in the Netherlands next month. Specs are said to be the same as the traditional black diamond.

And there's an added bonus.

If you're over in the NL and pick one up, you'll also be greeted by a voucher that lets you "Pimp My Diamond." (Xzibit probably not included.) You send the voucher back to HTC and get your choice of a gold, silver or pink back cover that has Swarovski Crystals inlaid.

Let it never be said again that Europeans don't care what their phones looks like.

The Touch Pro just seems to be everywhere of late. A recap:

And finally, some Verizon news. In the PPC Geeks forum thread that Malatesta deftly waded through last week, a source close to HTC noted that the Verizon Touch Pro would indeed be "crippled," as the carrier is prone to do with its phones.

Yes, will it be crippled SADLY yes, it will have a lower CPU and memory, but from the test model I honestly did not see a difference unless you use some serious programs.

The folks over at the Boy Genius Report have noticed an addendum to this statement.

UPDATE: Verizon phone does show a 7501a chipset so its looking like it will be crippled

They then connect the dots and note that the Qualcom 7501a chipset at 528 MHz is in fact exactly what is powering the Sprint Touch Pro. The lesser 400MHz 7500 chip is what a leak first suggested was headed to the Verizon phone.

So, what the heck does this mean if you're with Verizon and want a Touch Pro? Which processor will you get? Will Verizon lock down the GPS, as it's been prone to do in the past?

What it means is hang in there. Hopefully it will all get sorted out soon. Stay tuned.

Updated: AT&T Fuze spotted on eBay

Update: And with just hours left to go in the auction, the listing has been pulled. Can't say we're too surprised. Nov. 4, here we come.

If you can't wait just a little bit longer to get your hands on the AT&T Fuze (Or Touch Pro, or Touch Pro Fuze, or Touch Fuze — whatever you want to call the carrier's release of the HTC device — one has been spotted on eBay. [via WM Poweruser]

The auction ends Monday at 9:04 p.m. EDT/6:04 p.m. PDT and was at $400 at the time of this writing. That'd be more than reasonable for an off-contract (though we assume still carrier-locked) HTC Touch Pro. The packaging and marketing materials make it look like a full-on production device and not a pre-release unit.

That said, this is eBay we're talking about, and the first line in the description is a wee bit curious:

You are bidding on a brand new HTC Touch Pro Fuze that has been designed for the AT&T network. I used this phone for one day to test and it is a fantastic device. Unfortunately my company works only on the Blackberry platform so I can't use it for my company e-mail.

That furrow your brow a little? Caveat emptor, of course.

Even if you're not planning on bidding, go on over and check out the auction page, if only to see some new pics of the phone.

Reminder: Sprint customers can pick up the Touch Pro starting Sunday!

Inside an HTC Facility: Rumors Galore!

So an interesting thread popped up over at ppcgeeks lead by criticalaudioinc.

A fairly recent member, Criticalaudioinc claims (and has verified with a moderator) that he works for HTC in one of their "repair/order/design" facilities and seems to have quite a grasp on the technical aspects of their phones. He then basically spilled his guts in 50 pages of posts. Must have been all that coffee.

So take the following with a shaker of salt, but here is a nice summary of what was revealed in the thread.

Read on for some interesting tid bits about the Diamond, Touch Pro and something about a CDMA Touch HD....!!

WMExperts: We sort through & summarize 50 pages of geek talk just for you!

(Note: we have added questions to facilitate criticalaudioinc's answers for sake of brevity; all block quotes are verbatim except for spelling corrections)

Delay for Sprint Touch Pro release--why? Needs a ROM update to fix the following:

  • Camera Lag issues: Software
  • GPS Lag issues: Software/reg edit
  • TF3D exception issues: software/reg edit/update
  • Camera Update - Software
  • System Performance with Processor - Software Update/patch
  • Speaker Volume issue - Check Hardware - Software/AD Update
  • Control PAD malfunction - Software/Update

CDMA Touch HD?

HTC is currently in discussion again on bringing the HTC Touch HD to the US, I currently have a GSM model that we were asked to convert to CDMA, All that was needed was to pull a board from the diamond and re-solder and flash the the rom. From what we can see it is working pretty well the solder isn't pretty but again its a test. But its looking good so far.

Battery Life + Heat Problems on Sprint Diamond?

Battery life issue on the diamond is due to the radio in constant refresh, basically instead of interval of 300ms the diamond was set to 100ms and causes battery drain. The heat issue is also another cause but the reason for the heat is due to the heat plate was not added to the sprint version behind the keys like it was supposed to and sprint and HTC are discussing that.
...the heat plate is on the Pro, also I tested the phone and over clocked the processor to test to see if there was a heat issue, there was not a problem at all, and the processor took the over clock nicely. I tested the radio also for the heat issue and after 2.2 hours it was warm to were it could be noticed but correct me if I'm wrong what phone doesn't get warm with that amount of talk time.

ROM Update for Sprint Diamond?

Once the updates are fully verified and fully tested which is what we are doing as we speak HTC will obtain the updated rom, Normally it takes around 4 to 6 weeks to release but I think there going to push this due to sprint is climbing down there backs about this.

Verizon: Crippled Touch Pro?

Yes, will it be crippled SADLY yes, it will have a lower CPU and memory, but from the test model I honestly did not see a difference unless you use some serious programs.

Is Sprint anxious to release the Touch Pro?

...they want the phone out before AT&T due to rise in iPhone sales, AT&T also had another rise in 3G sales due to the delay and from what the corp was telling me they are starting to lose an amount of customers due to the delay and moving to AT&T.

Video Cables for TV Out on the Sprint Touch Pro?

Video cables do not come with it sadly due to the high costs and such.

Release date for Sprint/Best Buy?

...the release looks to be nov 2 for EVP, telesales and Corp Consumer. Now From the information I was provide Bestbuy wants this shipped by the 24th which is what HTC wants pushed, and possibly out the 26th

How do you mass flash these damn WM devices anyways?

We use computer systems with 16 USB port configuration. We currently have 153 systems, These systems are designed to flash 16 phones in 7 minutes that is around 2448 phones ever 7 minutes with all 153 systems. That is around 20983 phone per hour all together.

Alltel Touch Diamond unboxing

We've known for a little while now that the HTC Touch Diamond was coming to Alltel. Now we know that the phone actually does exist and that someone has their hands on it, thanks to a thread over at Howard Forums.

There's still been no word of an official release date (or price, for that matter), a little birdie tells us it could be anytime now. Stay tuned.

Thanks, Brandon, for the tip!

We've warned you once that Palm will stop hosting the Windows Mobile 6 update for the Treo 750 on Oct. 31. Here's warning No. 2:

Palm will stop hosting the Windows Mobile 6 update for its Treo 750 on Oct. 31.

Again, you don't have to install the update if for some reason it's not your thing. But go ahead and download it in case you want it later.

And as we noted earlier this week, HTC is also getting ready to pull the plug on a few WM6 updaters. Our friends over at Kinoma (Thanks! And be sure to check out Dieter's chat with them on the Treocentral Treocast) just compiled links for the Treo and HTC downloads, and we share said links with you now.

The HTC Touch Pro — known as the Fuze around the AT&T circles — has already made a couple of appearances online, albeit briefly. First were a couple of Fuze-branded domain names, and then came an initial appearance on AT&T's business page.

Engadget Mobile is reporting that the Fuze has again found its way onto AT&T's business site, though apparently it's gone into hiding again.

Where will the elusive Fuze pop up next?  We suggest you keep an eye on a certain *cough* Windows Mobile site *cough* in the near future.

HTC puts Oct. 31 deadline on 6.0 upgrades

If you have an HTC device that has an upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.0 available, make sure you grab it by Oct. 31.

HTC has announced that the free updates will no longer be available come November.

Who should heed this news? Says HTC, owners of the following devices:

So if you have any of these devices, get your download on before it's too late. And as a reminder, the Windows Mobile 6.0 update to the Palm Treo 750 (another HTC-aided device) also expires on Oct. 31.

Chances are you're doing more with your Touch Diamond's (or Touch Pro's) G-sensor (accelerometer) than just switching back and forth between portrait and landscape mode.

But if you need a little help, wmpoweruser has complied a decent list of applications, including games and utilities.

Most of the app links head over to the giants at XDA developers. Included are the ubiquitous Lightsaber app, Lunar Tilt (seen at right), Diamond beer, Magic 8 Ball, and utilities such as BubbleLevel, G-Remote G-Mouse (as seen on WM Experts!), G-Alarm and a host of others.

Hit up the list here. And tell 'em WM Experts sent ya.

If you're a fan of unlocked phones as clean as virgin snow, devoid of carrier branding or crapware, look away now.

A post at XDA Developers has a couple of small pics of what appears to be the AT&T-branded Fuze, which is its version of the HTC Touch Pro. On the left is the basic Windows Mobile security unlock screen. On the right as a panel of apps on the Fuze.

We recently ran down the specs:

  • WM 6.1 Pro
  • Qualcomm 7201a, 528MHz Processor
  • 2.8“, 640x480 Touchscreen
  • Slide-out keyboard has a Start and OK button (yes, it matters)
  • 850/1900/2100 3G bands, Quad-Band EDGE
  • WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS
  • 3.1mp camera
  • 1340 mAh battery which can get you up to 8 hours (really?) of talk time under ideal conditions (read: EDGE and nothing else going on)

We're still looking at an Oct. 23 release, for $299 after the usual contracts and rebates.

HTC T8290 Leaks Out: WideScreen with WiMAX

Nedge2k just received some images and specs on a here-to-for unknown and unseen device from HTC: the T8290. It's a squarish Touch HD but looks to be built to run on WiMAX with some GSM on the side. It's got that beautiful 800x480 screen, WiFi to back up the other radios, and Bluetooth (naturally).

Also as with the Touch HD, we're not confident this is coming to the states (after all, WiMAX is really only up and running in a reliable way in Baltimore), instead it seems destined for Russia's Yota network. Unlike the Touch HD, the T8290 doesn't appear to have a 3.5mm headset jack.

So what does this mean for us? One: it means that HTC really is building smartphones with WiMAX capability -- something we were worried wouldn't happen. Two: it means that HTC has now made two devices with 480x800 screen resolution. We're going to go ahead and hope that they have a third up their sleeve that's destined for these United States.

Touch Diamond appears headed to Alltel

We've known for a while that the HTC Touch Pro is likely going to Alltel. Now it appears that the Touch Diamond see get some love from the little carrier that could.

Alltel's Website has a Touch Diamond page up, though it's not yet accessible from from the main phones and devices page. We don't think this is a typo, mistaking the Touch Diamond for the Touch Pro (that darn name game again), given the previously leaked Alltel Touch Pro photo that Engadget got hold of.

Also, no word on pricing. Or an availability date. While there is a link to download the rebate form (pdf warning), it expires Oct. 30 and specifically mentions the HTC Touch. So we'd expect that to change.

Either way, look for the Touch Diamond on another CDMA carrier in the near future.

Thanks, Brandon, for the tip!

Taste the rainbow of Touch Diamond

Speaking of the Touch Diamond, it looks like you can now get it in myriad colors — if you're in France. [via]

Will we see these colors (black, fuchsia, white, brown, blue, purple, red and yellow) here? That'll be up to the carriers, unless HTC decides to send us some of that rainbow goodness in an unlocked device. And remember that Sprint worked up a cool red-backed scheme for its Diamond.

The real question: Would a fuchsia Touch Diamond get ol' Malatesta to warm up to the black slab form factor?

Thanks, Diego!

Another look at the T-Mobile Shadow II

We've known for a while now that the update to the popular T-Mobile Shadow would be dropping on Oct. 15. We're still expecting it for $149.99 after rebate. We know it will support the T-Mobile @ Home service (UMA, for you acronym-lovers). We're still not sure if it'll have TMo's 3G service.

And what we're pretty darn sure of is that the paint job is sexy as hell. Granted, a little of that could just be light playing tricks on us. But even if that's the case, throw us in the briar patch. Check out more pictures here.

The Android fanboys better hope this isn't sitting next to the G1 in the store.

Your weekend Touch HD fodder

";" alt="">

It's been a few days since we've done any drooling over the HTC Touch HD, and that's been long enough.

Above is a short promo video [via & via] for the upcoming device — someone get us a date and price already! — that serves to pique our interest that much more.

What we'd really like to see is this thing in a few more hands (I'll gladly volunteer if Dieter's busy), and some light at the end of the tunnel. This wait is starting to get painful.

Thanks, Jeremy, for the tip!

It's bad enough that three-year contracts are the norm up in Canada. Now comes word that the HTC Touch Pro will still cost $299.99 — even with the full subsidy from Telus.

The prices keep going up (obviously) if you're not willing to indebt yourself to the carrier for the full 1,095 days. You'll be looking at $549.99 for a two-year plan, $599.99 for a one-year deal and $649.99 sans contract.

The Touch Pro is a sexy device, no doubt. Check out Dieter's hands-on video here. But the $300, two-year deal in the U.S. is much easier on the stomach than what our friends to the north have to endure. And if I were in Canada and had $550 burning a hole in my pocket, I might just hold out for an unlocked Treo Pro to arrive.

HTC S740 at the FCC, and without U.S. 3G

We were briefly hoping that when the HTC Rose 100 (that's the S740 to you) made its way through the Federal Communications Commission testing it would emerge with U.S. 3G bands.

Alas, that's not the case.

But if you're burning for the Touch Pro-esque device, approval from the FCC means you'll be able to import this guy and not wait for (hopefully) a U.S. version.

As a reminder, here's what you'll be getting.

  • Windows Mobile 6.1
  • Size: 116.3 x 43.4 x 16.3 mm
  • Weight: 140g with battery
  • Networks: WCDMA/HSDPA: 900/2100 MHz for EU and Asia (Read: No 3G in the US)
  • GSM/GPRS/EDGE: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
  • Display: 2.4-inch QVGA screen
  • Camera: 3.2 megapixel with fixed focus
  • Internal memory: 256 MB flash; 256 MB RAM
  • Memory card: microSD™
  • WLAN: 802.11b/g
  • Bluetooth®: 2.0 with EDR
  • GPS: GPS/AGPS
  • Interface: HTC ExtUSB™ (mini-USB and audio jack in one; USB 2.0 High-Speed)
