Sony's latest Windows 8 convertible, VAIO Flip , is a premium device that brings a unique form factor design to the VAIO portfolio. It features a unique hinge that makes it capable of converting between laptop, tablet, and viewer modes by flipping the display over the hinge.

The Sony VAIO Flip is available in 13-inch, 14-inch, and 15-inch sizes, and I spent a couple of weeks with the Sony VAIO Flip 13. Read on for our overall experience with the device and a comprehensive review.

The Confusion

If you head over to your local electronics shopping center, the blinking LEDs and flickering screens you witness from the lineup of computers on display, are most likely coming from what OEMs call “consumer machines”.

If you are a Windows Phone fan, there is a good chance you are a fan of vibrant colors. I myself am a lover of the color red and keep my vibrant Nokia Lumia 920 on me at all times. Today, Sony has announced a new addition of ruby red Windows PCs. For those wondering, the brightly colored machines are not a part of the (RED) ™ charity.

There are only a few Windows 8 laptops in production that we can consider to be the ‘high end’, machines with exacting build quality and specifications to match. While many PC makers are content to push out hum drum machines with middling specs and so so performance the same cannot be said for Lenovo and their ThinkPad range. Over the years their quality and reliability have become legend amongst the most demanding of laptop buyers.

The ThinkPad X1 comes in a body woven from Carbon fibre in a style similar to that of the current crop of Ultrabooks. Lenovo seems keen on finally shunting the look of their machines forwards and have recently adopted Chicklet keyboards and of course the wedge shape body design we have all come to recognize of late.  I’ll be kicking the tires on the X1 to see how well Lenovo have melded the heritage of ThinkPad with the modern styling of an Ultrabook.

With the official release of Windows 8 only weeks away we have already seen online listings for Windows 8 computers. Now we are seeing Windows 8 computers on store shelves.

The Best Buy in St. Cloud, MN has several laptops and desktops from HP on display running Windows 8. Based on the reports, the computers are running demo versions of Windows 8 to give you a feel for things. While you can check these new computers out in the store, you can't take them with you just yet. While the computers are in stock, Best Buy is only taking pre-orders for the HP Windows 8 computers.

The Home Shopping Network (HSN) has two Gateway Windows 8 laptops for sale, and at an attractive price too. One can pick up a 15.6" model for just $649.95, or $699.95 for the 17.3" version. Both laptops sport an Intel Core i5 processor, and come with 4GB RAM accompanied by a 500GB hard drive. While both are identical with regards to specifications, neither sports a touch screen.
