launch party

Although our local AT&T store has the Lumia 1020 on display, it pales in comparison to what went down at a flagship AT&T location in Chicago recently. In a video posted on YouTube, the massive launch party featured certainly one of the most elaborate in-store setups we have come across for any smartphone launch. In fact, the whole store is seemingly devoted to displaying the Lumia 1020 and its 41MP camera.

Most of you were unable to come to our swinging, swanky, super special launch party for Talk Mobile 2013 that happened exactly one week ago tonight. Because of that, we’ve recapped the event for you some super delicious HD video.

All in all, we had 680 of you phone geeks come out for our 3 hour rager. Truth be told, this was one of those events that could have gone either way: lots of fun with free alcohol and kicking music, or a bunch of dudes hanging around, awkwardly looking at their phone screens. Luckily for us, it was most definitely the former as the party was quite spectacular.

Friday night we gave you a sneak peak of Nokia's launch party for the Lumia 900 that took place in New York City's Times Square. Surrounded by thousands of tourists and New Yorkers alike, Nicki Minaj took the stage to perform numerous songs in support of her new album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded.

In addition to the show, a remix of her popular single "Starships" debuted along with a full-production video shot by Nokia to coincide with the AT&T Lumia 900's official introduction to the world.

If one thing can be said of Nokia it's they know how to go big for a launch party (see London and the Lumia 800). For some reason, we can't imagine HTC, Samsung or LG ever throwing such a massive media event and for that we're excited to see Nokia championing Windows Phone (as opposed to Android).

While it remains to be see if the Lumia 900 will be the hit that it is expected to be, it certainly seems to be off to a very good start.

We knew Nokia wasn't going to just sit by and let the AT&T Lumia 900 launch without an "event" to go with it. Low and behold, that whole countdown on the SmartphoneBetatest.com site was counting down to this very day.

The launch party is happening in New York City, specifically Times Square at 7 pm and is open to the public. There will be a live performance from....someone and we're hoping for something awesome visually (Lasers? Can we get some lasers?).

Of course being that we're in New York City, heck we're not too far from Times Square right now, we should be able to be there to cover the event with video, photos and a full report.

Stay tuned...

Nokia hasn't failed when it comes to hosting some awesome events and parties, neither has HTC for that matter. We looked at the Lumia launch event in Copenhagen, Denmark earlier today that was held at a football stadium, and now we have the Korean Lumia 710 launch party (December 30th), which looks pretty darn awesome.

There appears to be a lot of drink, food, live music performances and prizes - we wish we could have attended. Oh and if you're interested in the tune, it's "Believe" by Elite Force and Meat Katie.

The official date for the Lumia 800 release in South Africa was set for the 7th of February, but Simon Dingle has just tweeted out the image above.

If you struggle to read white on red, then here's the breakdown: The Nokia Lumia 800 will see it's first promotion on the 26'th January starting at 8AM. The first 200 people to purchase will get a free XBOX (presumably a 360). Seems like a pretty good deal, although obviously there is no pricing mentioned.

So what is the significance of the 26'th? That's the morning after the Nokia Lumia 800 launch event held at the Vodacom Dome, which is tomorrow.

Stay frosty, and lookout for our report from the launch tomorrow!

If you needed anymore proof that South Africa isn't just being tossed aside when it comes to the Nokia Lumia/future devices, then we have great news for you. We have just received word from an anonymous tipster that Nokia is holding an event in Midrand near the end of this month. Although the invite doesn't outright say that this is a launch party or unveiling event, it's probably quite safe to assume that it is.

And here is the invite:

Besides the obvious positives of Nokia launching their Windows Phone 7 devices in South Africa, there is another aspect that you may not have considered. Blackberry and Android may be all the rage over here at the moment but before that Nokia was a really big player in SA.

I remember a time when almost every person I knew either had a Nokia or was attempting to get one. What this means is that when they start selling their new phones people will not be buying Windows Phone, they will be buying a Nokia, because they trust the brand. So this skips the step of people avoiding WP7 because of their feelings on Windows Mobile, and allows them to experience the amazing everyday with no bias.

EDIT: This is a private event.

We're not going to lie, the 'I Love Windows Phone' site and fans have a bit more enthusiasm for the launch of Windows Phone than we had here.  What you are watching above is a fan made video made for a "Mango" preview meet-up held in Taipei a few weeks ago. Okay, so it's not like a ton of people showed, but damn these kids have spirit! Anyways, it's a fun video for the weekend and great to see our friends in the Asian markets jumping on the Windows Phone train.  You can see more pics here.

Maybe we should organize a meet-up someday. Hmmm...
