UK mobile operator O2 has announced that the company will be launching its 4G mobile network on August 29th. The operator will snap up second place in the LTE race here in the UK, following EE's incredible lead to get established over its competitors. Initially available in London, Leeds and Bradford, O2 will be planning to extend the service to cover a further 10 cities by 2014.

This is the news many consumers have been waiting for. EE will now be challenged by O2 and competing networks as the likes of Vodafone and Three also hop on-board and launch their respective network upgrades. How much will you be looking to fork out for 4G on O2? The basic 4G tariff will be starting at £26 a month - though it's not yet known what the plan will include.

EE has announced plans to stock the Lumia 625, which was announced by Nokia yesterday in London. As well as taking up the most affordable 4G Windows Phone, the UK mobile operator has also expanded its LTE coverage to cover a further 10 locations. It makes perfect sense for the network to really take advantage of the cheaper 4G option to offer a more cost-effective solution to customers.

EE has today launched new plans on the UK's only 4G network. From tomorrow consumers will be able enjoy double the speed than what was previous available, with between 24-30Mbps on offer to those who reside in supporting towns and cities. Sporting Windows Phone 8 hardware, this news is of particular importance to subscribers who enjoy speedy connectivity while on the move. As well as the new plans, EE had numerous service announcements to make.

If you’re reading this using a Nokia Lumia 928 on Verizon you can start counting your lucky stars. It looks like the device in your hand has more under the hood than we’ve been led to believe. Later this year Verizon is upgrading their LTE network to support faster speeds. The only thing standing between your Lumia 928 and that network is time and a software update.

UK mobile operator Everything Everywhere (EE for short) has launched its 30-day 4G SIM-only plans to take full advantage of the network improvements the company has been carrying out since last year. Being the only operator to offer LTE to consumers in the UK, these new plans allow consumers to trial the EE network. It was only back in November when EE eventually launched its 12-month SIM-only plans.

UK mobile operator Vodafone is set to wait until this coming September until the company looks to launch its 4G LTE upgrade, according to The Guardian. The newspaper states Vodafone will miss the original target window of summer to launch 4G services and compete with EE. It's believed the delay will be in place for a compatible iPhone, but we could also be witnessing support for Nokia's new flagship.

We’re not a 100% certain on the specific of this one, but the Samsung SCH-R860U has cleared the FCC sporting Band 12 LTE. That band is used by US Cellular, making this phone destined for that carrier and that carrier only (sorry, Sprint fans).

The question is, does the phone run Android or Windows Phone 8? With the Galaxy S4 right around the corner and Sammy’s slightly cold support of Windows Phone 8, we’d lean on it being another Android phone. But the site Blog of Mobile, who have a pretty decent reputation for finding these filings, claims it sports Windows Phone 8.

The other day, we doused some cold water on the rumor that the Nokia Lumia 810 on T-Mobile would get a firmware update to enable its LTE radio for that carrier. Seeing as the chipset is a SoC Snapdragon S4, it’s typical for such setups to have features there but not enabled (either by request, OEM choice or lack of proper APIs)—in other words, it’s totally plausible.

Reader of the site jgbstetson emailed the president and CEO of T-Mobile about the update and had his question pushed to the right people in the chain of command (much like Nokia, evidently you can get a response from the bigwigs at T-Mobile).

It was reported a few weeks back and evidently re-validated by Windows Phone Daily that the Nokia Lumia 810, a T-Mobile “exclusive” phone, would receive an over-the-air firmware update at some point to enable 4G LTE speeds.

What’s more, it’s been said that the 810 and not the HTC 8X would be getting this feature, a claim somewhat confirmed by a recent FCC filing for Nokia’s device. When the original report came out, it stated that the Galaxy Note II would also get such an update.

Three UK has announced in a press release that its LTE upgrade, which is set to arrive later this year, will be added to existing and future plans with no upgrade fee. This means that consumers on supported plans will be able to take full advantage of improved network performance without forking out extra pennies (should you have a capable smartphone, of course).

There are some interesting discussions going in our forums on the T-Mobile Lumia 810 (see our unboxing), which shows the phone is gaining some ground with customers.

First up is getting the phone carrier-unlocked. Sure, you may have to renew that contract (if not buying full price) but for those of you who want that freedom to take your phone anywhere, T-Mobile is evidently playing fair...

EE, the only UK carrier to launch 4G LTE services thus far, has unleashed its SIM-only plans. Pricing starts at £21 a month with a 500MB data allowance, and tops at £36 for a 5GB upgrade to further increase the capabilities of the 4G speeds. So are these prices any better than what's already available at the carrier?

We received an interesting email today from unlocked-mobiles.com who have informed me that there will in fact be two variants of the Nokia Lumia 820 on sale in the UK. Most retailers will be selling the 3G version but the stock coming into unlocked-mobiles.com are 4G enabled.

So what does this mean for us consumers? Currently if you are looking to jump on the UK 4G LTE bandwagon you only have one carrier option at the moment and that is with EE. All the other UK carriers will have 4G in the near future but many of us smartphone geeks want the fastest connection as soon as possible. We have tested out the EE 4G speeds as you have seen and getting the new service in the UK is like a breath of fresh air, but it also comes at a cost.

With BUILD 2012 now behind us, we can talk a little about those Lumia 920’s that were handed out en masse to all the developers in attendance (media did not get them nor the Surface).

Seeing as BUILD attracts developers from all over the world, it would be a bit inconsiderate to give out a phone with limited 3G/4G capabilities as some would get the full package, while others would be restricted to their network. The problem is multi-dimensional as 3G GSM and 4G LTE networks vary quite widely, not to mention the combination of the two often required for great performance.

One could easily turn this into a hate-filled rant at EE, but we'll remain calm with a cup of tea in one hand and the crumpet in the other. According to a press release sent out this morning (crossing over Nokia incidentally), EE announced its UK 4G plans, and what it will be charging consumers to make use of the extra speeds offered by the UK's first LTE network.

Now don't get us wrong, we expected a slight jump in pricing due to the exclusivity held by EE on the improved network speed, but what has been revealed by the company is almost mind boggling.

Should information which has been passed on to us be accurate, O2 UK will be sporting not three, but four Windows Phones. A Windows Phone Central reader was able to extract details from the carrier surrounding the potential stocking of a Lumia 920 with LTE capabilities. A support representative answered queries with some degree of affirmation.

The Lumia 920 has been picked up by EE (Everything Everywhere) as an exclusive launch handset for its new 4G LTE UK network. While the exclusivity will be limited in duration, and other operators (including O2) will subsequently be able to stock the Nokia flagship Windows Phone, it's positive to see a UK carrier planning to arrive at the Microsoft party with chocolate cake.

The HTC 8X is well on its way to Verizon

We're aware that Verizon is most probably going to stock the HTC 8X - in fact, it's pretty much a certainty. Not only has the Windows Phone been confirmed to be heading to the US carrier by its own roadmap, but HTC also hinted in one of its press releases.

If that weren't enough, a HTC 8X video sports a Verizon 4G LTE logo on the rear panel of one of the featured models. Just to ensure there's little doubt left. Here's some more good news as today it has been reported that the FCC has cleared the HTC 8X for docking.
