Lumia 510

Nokia has begun rolling out its updated Camera Extras and Cinemagraph app to all Windows Phone users this month, with the Lumia 900, 800 and 710 smartphones receiving the new features to bring functionality up to speed with what Lumia owners can enjoy with Windows Phone 8 (see above shot of the Lumia 920).

While this doesn't add all functionality that's missing from the 7.8 update (compared to Windows Phone 8), it's a welcomed update from Nokia to bring Cinemagraph to those who chose first generation hardware.

Nokia is sure paying attention to their entry level Windows Phones as both the Lumia 510, which just came out, and the slightly older Lumia 610 are both getting some Windows Phone 7.8 treatment and updates.

Microsoft noted that devices would start shipping with 7.8 in late December while those with current devices will have to wait a smidge later to get the update delivered via Zune desktop.

Today, Nokia took the wraps off of the Lumia 505, expected to be an exclusive low-end Windows Phone for Mexico’s Telcel network and sister device to the Lumia 510.

The Lumia 505 should be launching within the next few weeks and the phone, which comes in red, pink or black, admittedly looks strikingly bold. The full device specs have also now been revealed for the Windows Phone 7.8 device and while it skimps severely on storage (4GB, non-expandable) the rest of the features are solid.

Yesterday we brought you some in depth information of what will be coming in the Windows Phone 7.8 update, expected to appear in China in a few weeks (presumably with the launch of the Nokia Lumia 510).  New features such as a revamped Tile design, new Tile sizes and dynamic Lockscreen wallpaper (Bing) were revealed including the current build number.

Now a new video, presumably from Winp.cn, shows the current build of Windows Phone 7.8 (8858) in action. Actually, it’s less action and more of a nice, soothing stroll on some of the more superficial changes coming in the OS update. The new tiles are shown off and we even see the Bing lockscreen wallpaper working (we’re hoping that third-party apps can take advantage of it too like in Windows Phone 8).

We have heard of a new low end unit in the Lumia family of Nokia's for a while. Lumia 510, the successor to the Lumia 610, with a curiously lower number for a name. Thanks to the timing of its debut, some might have expected it to be a Windows Phone 7.8 device. The Chinese folks just got a real unit and had a quick review. Overall, the Lumia 510 is a nice enough budget device, but totally lacks any real surprises.

The Lumia 510, which we took a gander at not too long ago, has been captured in the wild. GSMArena has received a rather small photo showing the Lumia Windows Phone in its glory with a sizeable reflective screen. What's more is pricing and specifications have been reportedly confirmed by an unnamed source. Nothing's official, nor have any details been announced, so be sure to take this with a minute grain of salt.

It looks like Nokia is still pushing ahead with some low-end phones to compete with the likes of Android, especially in China.

News has come forward this morning that a new device caledl ‘Lumia 510’ has just passed certification in China. The specs aren’t anything eye catching for obvious reasons but it should sell well if priced right:

  • 4 "LCD screen, 5MP
  • 120.7 x 64.9 x 11.51 (mm), 129 (g)
  • GSM-WCDMA-HSPA
  • 800MHz MSM7227A + 256MB RAM + Windows Phone 7.5/7.8

No word on exact release date though we’re sure more information will come forward shortly. What’s interesting is that the device is running Windows Phone 7.5 and will get the 7.8 upgrade but alas, no Windows Phone 8.
