lumia

You may recall reading about my account of what happened when I took my Nokia Lumia 920 out for a spin on my bike with a sub-standard bike mount back in June and how it took a beating that only an action hero could withstand.

I figured I would post a follow up on how my Lumia 920's story, like those of the silver screen, had a fairly happy ending, complete with a new grey chassis.

If you follow all things Windows Phone you’re no doubt aware that when it comes to premium accessories, it’s fairly slim pickings out there. Like all things for our beloved ecosystem though, one OEM is taking things seriously enough to push manufacturers for accessories designed to work perfectly with Windows Phone; Nokia. Through partnerships with JBL, Monster and Fatboy, the Finnish giant’s sponsored accessories are squarely aimed its own Lumia line of course, but as they’re designed to work best with Windows Phone you’ll still get a great experience from your HTC 8 series or Samsung Ativ phones.

All of which brings us nicely to today’s review, the Monster/Nokia Purity Pro headset. This isn’t Monster and Nokia’s first dance together, the ‘Purity’ brand has already been applied to another set of over-the-ear cups and also to a set of ear buds, and yet those forays into the brightly coloured accessory world have been met with some mixed reviews, and in my personal opinion the wired Purity HD earphones leave a lot to be desired. We initially went ‘ears on’ (last time I use that phrase I promise) with the headset at the Mobile World Congress this year, and came away impressed, but a little bewildered by the initial cost of entry. Now we’re lucky enough to say we own a pair and have spent a week using them out and about to gauge just whether or not you can justify the relatively high price point.

Windows Phone Central's review of Nokia's next flagship Windows Phone 8 device, the Lumia 925

Nokia has numerous Windows Phone 8 handsets available on the market, but that hasn’t stopped the Finnish manufacturer from launching yet another flagship smartphone. The Lumia 920 launched late last year, along with Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 to the public, and since then we’ve seen multiple devices come to life, including the affordable Lumia 520. Nokia is certainly hitting each price point.

We’ve got our hands on the new Nokia Lumia 925 and have been able to play with the new smartphone to see how it fares with low-light photography, performance and general mobile phone use. Billed as the best Windows Phone experience yet, how does the Nokia Lumia 925 stack up and is the mobile phone as good as Nokia promote it to be? If you’re in a hurry and can’t read our review: yes, it’s actually that good.

One week from now we’ll have finished the Nokia Zoom event in NYC. We’ll have the complete picture of the Lumia “EOS” by then. Last night we shared the front of the device in an image leaked by @evleaks on Twitter. At the time he thought it would be called the Lumia 1020, but new information has crossed his path that suggests EOS/Elvis will be known at the Lumia 909. We’ve also got a new picture of the device, its backside.

Nokia will release the upcoming EOS (or just "Lumia 1020") Windows Phone in the UK, according to a report over on CNET. The website notes that a telecoms industry insider has confirmed as much and the handset will not be an exclusive product for the US. We're expecting to see some EOS action on July 11th. Images of the EOS have also been leaked online.

Windows Phone 8 launched over half a year ago and the message was clear from both HTC and Nokia. Devices were going to be loud, colorful, and playful. They were to be an expression of the operating system they housed inside. The HTC 8X and Nokia Lumia 920 led the charge of premium handsets we could choose from. Both OEMs have recently been recognized for their work by the industrial design community. They did it by taking top spots in the communication tools category at the International Design Excellence Awards.

At last count, Nokia had well over 50 exclusive apps or games in its Collection, giving Lumia owners a slight edge in features.

But that advantage may be no more, at least temporarily. According to Chinese site WPDang, there is a freshly spotted glitch in Windows Phone Store that could enable everyone to download exclusive apps from the Nokia Collection.

After we've seen the RM-877 (possibly the highly anticipated EOS) pass through FCC, the RM-941 has since followed through. The Nokia device passed through with support for AT&T's GSM 850 and 1900 bands and will feature a WVGA display. While we're not seeing LTE capabilities in the US, such frequencies are believed to be included outside these two regions.

Oh how we hate Mondays (insert Garfield cartoon here). Looks like we may be spending more time than we want debunking rumors rather than posting confirmed news, but the internet is aflutter these days with numerous new Nokia speculation. Because an inbound 41MP Windows Phone just isn’t enough…

The latest rumor that just won’t go away use one of the most detested words we can think of: phablet. Typing it just makes us recoil for some unknown linguistic reason. Phablets are that new category of device that is combination of ‘phone’ and ‘tablet’, meaning devices with a 5” screen or bigger—give or take. It’s exemplified by popular devices like the Samsung Galaxy Note I and II, which ironically have beaten most analysts expectations by actually resonating very well with the public.

We’ve known for a little while that the upcoming Lumia ‘EOS’, Nokia’s first foray into a massive-shooter for Windows Phone, will come in the same color lineup as the current 920 that it is based off of. Yesterday we saw the phone in black but we know yellow and other variants are available too.

Now a new image has leaked of what looks to be the EOS in a glossy red finish. This isn’t the full phone, of course, but rather just the polycarbonate shell which is evidently in early production tests in some Nokia factory.

Nokia has pushed out an update for all Ringtone Maker users. The Nokia exclusive app, which can be found in the Nokia Collection, enables the creation of ringtones from music files stored locally on the Windows Phone 8 device. While Xbox Music tracks are not supported (unless purchased), it's a great little app to create some fresh new tunes.

Nokia has updated their Storage Check and Transfer My Data apps to fix a few bugs and add a few new features.

Transfer My Data is a handy utility app to transfer contacts over Bluetooth from your old phone to your new Nokia Windows Phone. The Nokia app was updated to version 4.1 update and with no change log, the changes aren't as obvious. We are seeing that SMS and Photos can be transferred as well as contacts from supported phones.

We've experienced Nokia tease and show off its upcoming wireless charging car stand (the CR-200), with the most recent sighting at the Nokia Lumia 925 and Lumia 928 event in London. We also got to check out Nokia's docking app that would launch through NFC as the Lumia Windows Phone is inserted into the stand. Today we're pleased to relay news that this very product has now passed through FCC.

You've noticed we cover system app updates regularly here with manufacturers releasing updates that alter specific features on a particular Windows Phone. It can be difficult to keep up with the number of system apps Nokia updates with its Lumia family of products. Cue LUMIA pusher, which will enable you to check to see if you have the latest versions.
