The Nokia Lumia 610 has hit the shelves in Malaysia at Nokia stores and other retailers. The 610 comes in four different colors and is averaging RM699 ($229).  The budget-friendly handset sports Windows Phone 7.5 Tango (build 8773), which is designed to run on devices with less RAM.

Inside you will find:

  • 3.7" screen
  • 800MHz CPU
  • 256MB of RAM
  • 8GB internal storage
  • 5-megapixel rear camera

Don't be fooled by the hardware.  The Lumia 610 is an impressive phone that offers the same style and quality of it's higher-end siblings. The Lumia 710 and 800 went on sale in the region back in February and the 610 looks to ride upon that success.

MasterCard announced that seventeen near field communication (NFC) enabled smartphones have been certified to work with their PayPass mobile phone payment system.  Among the bunch is the Nokia Lumia 610 NFC. The approval essentially means that the device has been tested by MasterCard and is confirmed to work with PayPass.

In addition to giving the thumbs up to the group of smartphones, MasterCard also unveiled their PayPass Ready identifier, "a way for mobile device manufacturers to differentiate products that have undergone testing for MasterCard PayPass and received a Letter of Approval."  Manufacturers will have the option to use the PayPass Ready logo in advertisements, or even as a decal on the devices themselves.  Nokia and RIM are the first two phone makers to embrace the new branding.

"Nokia is honored that the Nokia Lumia 610 NFC will be one the world's first smartphones to include MasterCard's PayPass Ready brand mark," said Andrea Bacioccola, NFC Lead Program Manager, Nokia. "This sends a clear message to operators, banks and other service providers that Nokia is able to quickly enable their payment services on this smartphone."

NFC hasn't quite made it into the mainstream, though services like Google Wallet are making a lot of headway.  That being said, it's a positive sign that Nokia is jumping on the bandwagon and becoming a player in the game.

You can check out the full press release below for details on the PayPass program and the other companies and devices involved with it.

Amazon Italy has the entry-level Nokia Lumia 610 available for pre-order and set to be in stock on May 22. It is currently listed at a price of € 203.51 ($267). The Lumia 610 is Nokia's first attempt at a truly low-end offering and will come loaded with Windows Phone 7.5 Tango (build 8773), which is a stripped down version designed to run on as little as 256MB RAM.

Inside you will find:

  • 3.7" screen
  • 800MHz CPU
  • 256MB of RAM
  • 8GB internal storage
  • 5-megapixel rear camera

But despite the budget hardware, the 610 is still a hot little number.  It retains the look and feel of its higher-end brethren and fits nicely in the Lumia family.  It's not clear if the May 22 availability applies to other European markets, but we will keep you posted as we find out.

Nokia surprised many at the Mobile World Congress 2012 event in Barcelona this year by announcing a beast of a smartphone - the PureView 808. Boasting a 41MP sensor, coupled with advancements in camera technology and research by Nokia, the Symbian powered smartphone is set to be a diamond when it comes to snapping those memorable moments.

While the Nokia 808 is no Windows Phone, it's exciting to see how Nokia can stay in the midst of the competition with available resources. It has been confirmed that technology used in developing the 808 will eventually be available on Microsoft's platform (an extension to the exclusive partnership with Carl Zeiss reaffirms this possibility) - something many of us wouldn't mind witnessing.

The Finnish manufacturer has published a press release (three in one day - not bad) detailing plans to start rolling out the Nokia 808 in select markets this month. The smartphone has received multiple awards, including Best Mobile Device at Mobile World Congress and Best Imaging Innovation for 2012, and also features full HD 1080p video recording (with 4x lossless zoom).

Would you be interested in a Windows Phone from Nokia that features such a camera, and will you pick up the Nokia PureView 808 just to see how it is? Check out the press release after the break.

Ben (the "PC Guy" and "Mass Windows Phone Marketing Agent") Rudolph is returning with a slightly different attempt to give away Windows Phones. Should you desire what we'd assume to be a white Lumia 900, then you might be in with a chance of winning one (image / competition idea courtesy of Nokia For Us). Simply use your creative powers to create a suitable caption for the above photo, which sits the Nokia device next to a white bar of Dove soap.

How does one enter with their snazzy caption? Simply tweet your entry, adding the #captionthatlumia (click to view some of the entires already published) hashtag. The competition is running through until April 29th (11:59pm PT) when Rudolph will create a post on the Windows team blog announcing the winners. You can enter as many captions as you like, we look forward to reading yours. It's at least a refreshing change from the Smoked by Windows Phone campaign.

The Lumia 900 is yet to be officially announced in Norway and nothing's detailed on the Lumia Momentum Map, but we've just been sent in a photo of a retailer terminal displaying an order for Lumia Windows Phones. As one can see in the photo, the Norwegian retailer Elkjøp is set to stock a handful of all three variants of the Lumia 900, including the glossy white version.

The expected delivery date of the ordered handsets, which we presume are simply demo units, is May 2nd, according to the employee. We could well be on the edge of an upcoming Nokia push in Norway with the flagship Lumia Windows Phone. We'll keep you all updated as this story develops and more information is officially released.

The Lumia 900 launch in the U.S. on AT&T is suffering from major sellouts due to simply not enough handsets being available on shelves. This could be due to not many being in stock to begin with, but with the device being featured as a "hero smartphone", we still like to believe that the sales have been strong.

Thanks tipster for sending in the photo!

Nokia has been aggressively marketing their Lumia Windows Phone family of devices, and it was only the other day that we reported on Samsung publicly announcing they believe the "Blown away by Lumia" challenges (much like Smoked by Windows Phone) being ran by the Finnish manufacturer in India are unethical.

Today we've come across another challenge recorded on film and the reaction of the losing contestant's girlfriend is particularly surprising (see below). Notice at the end when she asks both the host and her boyfriend if they can now leave where she throws in the closing comment that his smartphone is a "worthless Piece of s&^t".

What do you make of the above video? Hats off to Nokia for not editing it, should it be real of course.

Although we take it for granted sometimes that everyone who buys a Lumia device (610, 710, 800 or 900) either knows Windows Phone or can figure things out, that is far from the case.

In turn, Nokia today has released a new app called Lumia Highlights and it's there to lend a helping hand to those who want to discover cool new things about their Lumia as well as the Windows Phone OS. The app features useful tips, tutorials, latest news on great apps and of course they hook you with the great accessories.

While by no means revolutionary, the app is nicely laid out and should give new and old users alike something to poke around to discover new things, so we like it.

Pick up Lumia Highlights here on your Nokia Lumia phone.

On April 19, Nokia is expected to release their Q1 results.  As a precursor, they put out some initial figures, showing that despite relatively strong sales, their profits continue to shrink.  Nokia totaled €4.2 billion in phone sales, the bulk of which consisted of 71 million feature phones, Nokia's one-time bread and butter, bringing in around €2.3 billion.  Smart devices earned them about €1.7 billion.  And even though these seem like pretty big numbers, they are not enough to cover the cost of moving over to the Windows Phone platform in an attempt to gain a foothold in the smartphone arena.  The expected result is a first quarter finish 3 percent below the break-even mark.

But this doesn't mean all doom and gloom for Nokia.  Sales of Nokia's Lumia line of phones has been solid and continue to increase.  The Lumia 900 has gotten off to a quick start and doesn't show any signs of slowing yet.  And neither does Nokia CEO, Stephen Elop.  He says that he and his crew continue "to increase the clock speed of the company" and that "the change is tangible."  Considering that they scrapped their previous operating system in favor of Microsoft's just under a year ago, and that their first devices just hit the market last quarter, it's hard to call a 3 percent loss a failure.

Read the presser after the break.

Amazon has the AT&T Nokia Lumia 900 4G for $19.99, complete with free shipping for existing AT&T customers who re-up their contract.  If you are adding a new line of service, either to an existing account or as new AT&T customer, the Lumia 900 can be yours for $49.99.  That's a pretty great price for a phone that jumped to the #1 and #3 spots on Amazon's Best Sellers list upon its arrival.  So if you missed Amazon's one penny pre-order period or Walmart's $49.99 sale, pop on over to Amazon.

If you are looking to pick up the Lumia 900 free of contract, you can also get it there for the full retail price of $499.99.

Globe Telecom are celebrating the upcoming release of the Lumia 800 Windows Phone by giving one away for free on Twitter. Partnering up with Nokia, the carrier has a shiny new 800 to give away to a lucky Twitter user. So how does one enter this small contest?

Simply tweet @enjoyGlobe with your favourite Nokia handset and when you purchased it, followed by "I want a Nokia Lumia 800 from Globe! #GlobeLumia800". It's that simple, and you'll then have a good chance of pocketing your own 800 for absolutely nothing at all.

Be sure to get your tweets in now to be in with a chance of winning a free Lumia 800 as we're told it's only open for today. You can now also pre-order the Lumia 800 from Globe for just P1,499 /mo, which are expected to be available by April 16th.

AT&T has switched on Lumia 900 pre-orders on their website store, and is offering the 4G Windows Phone for $99 on contract. Should you wish to be aware of another enticing deal, Walmart has the same Lumia 900 listed for just $49.99 (with a 2-year plan), saving $50 on top of the AT&T price. Available to pre-order in both black and cyan, Windows Phone Daily reports that this offer is also eligible for those who seek upgrades.

Interestingly, buying the Lumia 900 outright will set the purchaser back by $499.99--$50 more than AT&T. Should you desire the white version, do note that we expect this version to be available on April 22nd and only in-store at AT&T outlets.

Nokia Lumia handsets are all set sport WiFi tethering with an imminent update, according to a report by Plaffo. We previously touched on the lack of tethering support found with the Lumia 710 and 800, and an FAQ article for the Lumia 900 stated the two handsets should be receiving an update in the near future to activate said feature.

The Lumia 610 and 900 both reportedly support Internet sharing out the box, which was introduced in the Windows Phone "Mango" update. Should Plaffo's source for this news, who's employed by Three in Italy, hold out we should see Nokia work with carriers to push out a firmware update that will address the issue of not being able to create a hotspot with a Lumia handset.

We do not expect to see tethering enabled in any of the current firmware released, which all sport battery improvements. This is due to Nokia ensuring carriers continue to roll out new versions with important stability fixes and do not skip an update to avoid tethering.

Nokia Lumia 610 heading to Ireland in Q2 2012?

The Lumia 610 low-cost Windows Phone is on its way to Ireland, according to Nokia Ireland on their Facebook page. The social team has stated Q2 2012 for when stock will be made available to consumers. The Lumia 610 has already been confirmed to be heading to the UK, Germany, Netherlands, and India, to name but a few.

This positive move will bring Windows Phone "Tango" to the Irish shores, offering consumers a more affordable option. The Lumia 610 sports a 3.7" screen (WVGA 800 x 480), 8GB storage and 256MB RAM. Check out the Nokia Ireland Facebook conversation transcript below:

Consumer: "when is Nokia Lumia 610 coming. I think it be great if Nokia give Lumia 610 or 720 to developers to be able to program an application and test it out. As i am working on Windows Phone application and i need a windows phone to make sure it works and i will give it back"

Nokia Ireland: "[...] the Nokia Lumia 610 will be coming to Ireland in Q2. We will be sure to keep you posted on it's arrival!"

Note that we'll keep this filed under "rumours" as nothing has been officially announced, nor is the Nokia Lumia Momentum Map reflecting this information (though it's not showing any plans for the Lumia 610 globally).

Thanks Mike for the heads up!

The Nokia Lab at SXSW [Pics]

Nokia has uploaded a number of photos from the Nokia Lab at SXSW (South by Southwest), showing devices, coloured test tubes, live music, presentations and general enjoyment. There were some photos in the album of particular interest, including a "SmokedbyWindowsPhone" type promotion. "Are you the fastest draw at SXSW?" provided guests with the opportunity to try and best the Lumia 900 at snapping a photo.

The manufacturer gave Windows Phone developers the opportunity to have their app showcased on Lumia demo units in the Lab for more exposure. Check out some more shots after the break, as well as the rest of the slideshow at Nokia's Flickr album.

Reuters has recently confirmed both the Lumia 610, which is a low-budget Windows Phone set to be unveiled next week at Mobile World Congress 2012, and a version of the Lumia 900 that is available beyond U.S. shores. This confirms the earlier rumour from PocketNow stating both handsets would be announced at MWC.

We'll of course be on the floor at the upcoming mobile event for the latest so be sure to keep an eye on our website or app for Nokia and Windows Phone coverage.

The Nokia Lumia 710 and 800 Windows Phones became available for pre-order today (or was it yesterday?) through the Australian wireless carrier Optus. Plans range from $19 to $79 with varying features and if you're in the market for either Windows Phone, WPDownUnder has worked up a rather detailed analysis of each plan. Pre-orders placed by February 26th will ship on March 1st.

VirginMobile, who will be offering the Lumia 710, has yet to release plan pricing and details. It has also been confirmed that select Nokia partners in Australia will have an unlocked version of the Lumia 710 available in March that will be compatible with Telstra's and Vodafone's 3G networks.

March seems to be shaping up to be a big month in Australia for the Nokia Lumia line of Windows Phones.

Love is certainly in the air with a Nokia Twitter contest in the UK, but Nokia France is pushing the bar up higher by setting up a floral display of roses on the the Place du Palais Royal, in Paris. The public will be given roses for free, along with a box that contains a card with a "2 for 1" meal offer.

From February 9th to March 11th, 2012, Nokia will offer the "2 for 1" deal with every Nokia Lumia 710 or 800 purchased to mark the "Amazing Valentine's Day". Participating restaurants will be able to offer the lucky couples a deal on the menu. Check out the offer on Facebook for more information, and the rules of course.

The Nokia Lumia 710 (our review) is now available for purchase from both Three and Vodafone in the UK, with contract prices starting from just £20. Should you wish to buy the handset outright, Three is offering this option for £199 - not a bad price for a Windows Phone Mango handset.

The Lumia 710 packs a 1.4 Ghz processor, 3.7" screen, 5MP camera, 8GB storage, and -of course- comes loaded with the exclusive Nokia Lumia app bundle. Both networks also offer the Lumia 800, should you require some extra umph.
