It’s been rumored and now confirmed: Nokia will be in San Francisco the same day Microsoft launches their Build 2014 developer conference. Coincidence? Of course not. Microsoft is expected to announce Windows Phone 8.1 in the early morning keynote, with Nokia taking their stage later in the day at 5 PM at their own event.

The last time Microsoft announced a major OS update – Windows Phone 8 – there was a delay of a few weeks before Nokia was ready to launch the Lumia 820 and Lumia 920. This time, that gap has closed.

Nokia and Microsoft both expect the acquisition of Nokia's handset unit to close in April. The two companies sent out their own press releases moments ago announcing an update on the acquisition. The regulatory process is expected to close sometime during next month. As we previously reported, the two companies had hoped to finish the deal sometime before mid-April. However, rulings in India and regulatory pause by Asian parties over potential patent abuse slowed the process.

Nokia teamed up with National Geographic photographer Stephen Alvarez (@alvarephoto) last summer to promote the launch of the Nokia Lumia 1020. Stephen and Nokia took the Lumia 1020 to the Grand Canyon in the United States to produce some stellar images. The partnership continues as Stephen recently visited Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to capture more beautiful images with the Lumia 1020 and the Lumia 1520. Check out the incredible video and a few images after the break.

Nokia, BMW, IBM, Vodafone, and Royal Dutch Shell are just a few of the multinational companies caught up in tax battles with the Indian government. A few days ago we learned that an Indian Supreme Court ruled that Nokia must deposit $571 million into an escrow account before it can transfer a key manufacturing plant to Microsoft.

As you know, Microsoft is trying to finalize its deal to acquire Nokia’s phone unit for $7.3 billion. Microsoft and Nokia hope to finish the deal before the month ends. However, the Indian government is making things a little tricky for the two companies.

Microsoft announced plans to purchase Nokia last year and the deal has gone through numerous checks, but reports now state we could be looking at just a month wait for the two companies to finalize everything. The deal will see Microsoft absorb Nokia's hardware division. Essentially, Microsoft will be taking over development of Lumia Windows Phones with the same teams that make the devices we enjoy using today.

Microsoft has a few hurdles to jump before it can finalize the acquisition of Nokia’s handset division. The biggest hurdle? Regulatory approval in China. As we reported a few days ago, Samsung and Google have expressed concern to the Chinese government over potential higher patent fees from the Microsoft-Nokia deal. Turns out Korea smartphone manufactures and the Korean government aren’t too keen on the idea either.

If there’s one thing we can all agree on is that Windows Phone has a perception problem, especially in the US and Canada. The phone hardware is often reviewed favorably, but critics tend to ding the OS for lack of apps. This so-called ‘app-gap’ has become less of problem as of late 2013, but the perception is still there. Also, MIA apps like Sonos don’t help either.

Nokia’s new ad, showcased on their Canadian YouTube channel, does a really good job of breaking it all down for the consumer. In fact, it’s one of the best we’ve seen. With bold bright graphics, the narrator talks about how impressive the Windows Phone store has become, highlighting things like UI design, Live Tiles, Windows Phone exclusive apps, and how major titles like Vine, Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram are all here already.

Review – Nokia Coloud Headphones

Nokia not only produces high quality smartphones and general accessories, but the company has also covered music. Nokia’s own MixRadio service is a great way for consumers to discover new artists and genres they may not have been previously aware of, but the company has done even more. Last year, Nokia paired up with Zound to release the Coloud family of headphones.

Ranging from in-ear buds to over-the-ear, noise cancelling cans, this affordable family of accessories brings the Lumia philosophy to headphones – perfect for any Lumia Windows Phone owner. First off: if you’re after the high-end, expensive headphones these won’t be for you. That’s not to suggest the quality isn’t good, quite the opposite. They’re just not overpriced gear.

In 2014, there are a lot of cool things. One of those, is not batteries. In fact, they’re downright ancient by comparison to the explosion of mobile tech. To put it another way, there really hasn’t been any new tech in batteries in years, although Qi 1.2 with its resonance charging is a nice step forward.

Nokia has posted a video today, slightly humorous, highlighting the issue. Shot entirely on a Lumia 1020, the video demonstrates how Nokia is working on various technologies to help charge your phone when you’re not near an outlet. The main one featured is a system using kinetic energy that transfers into electricity to charge a battery. It’s a neat idea, but as noted at the end, it still takes some time to charge.

Google and Samsung have joined Chinese mobile phone manufacturers in expressing concerns to Chinese courts about Microsoft's purchase of Nokia. Redmond is set to absorb Nokia's phone business for 7.2 billion dollars, integrating the division responsible for Lumia, Asha and X device families. The reasons behind this move are fears that the deal will result in higher patent licensing costs.

App Social by Nokia is a great app for making app discovery a bit more social rather than diving deep and across the breadth in the Windows Phone Store or Windows Store.

App Social first arrived as part of Nokia Collection on Lumia devices evolving from an erstwhile app called App Highlights. A while back the app made way to the Windows Store exclusively for Nokia Lumia 2520 tablets. The app is now available broadly for all Windows 8 devices.

When it comes to Mobile World Congress, there are always a few big stories that dictate the discussion. Whether they are flagship phones or company mergers or just new tech in general, someone steals the show.

For 2014's MWC, that would be Samsung. In research performed by social media listening platform Synthesio, they claim that Samsung was "mentioned 1,246,000 times, or in 44.2% of all online conversations". That number was only followed by Nokia, who were mentioned in 586,200 online conversations, or 20.8% of the time. That's second, but a distant one.

Nokia trolls the Samsung Galaxy S5

Besides the Nokia X, you don’t find much news on here related to Android. But we couldn’t pass up on this jab that Nokia made towards Samsung’s new flagship device – the Galaxy S5. The Galaxy S5 is Samsung’s newest model running Android 4.4.2 on a 2.5 GHz quad-core processor. It has a 5.1-inch display and a 1920 x 1080 resolution. It also has a fairly uninspiring design and is being lamented for not being too much better than the Galaxy S4, its predecessor. Which made it the perfect target for Nokia to take poke at. Check the image they tweeted out below.
