Panos Panay

Last week, Microsoft announced the Surface 2, Surface Pro 2, and a handful of accessories for the Surface family of devices. After the announcement, Surface boss Panos Panay did an AMA on Reddit where he and the team answered hundreds of questions. One thing we learned from the AMA was that an LTE version of the Surface 2 is planned for early next year.

Yesterday Microsoft officially announced and detailed the upcoming Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2. They also revealed over half a dozen new accessories for the Surface family and all those new gadgets went on pre-order this morning. Surface boss Panos Panay also did an AMA on Reddit yesterday where he and the Surface team answered hundreds of questions. If he didn’t answer one of yours, you might be able to ask him in person at your local Microsoft Store.

We have covered this story before: Microsoft made a special SKU of Surface (Intel processor powered) for China, replacing Windows 8 Pro with Windows 8, but pre-loaded with permanently licensed Office 2013 Home & Student. To many, not necessarily Chinese, this version is even more desirable than the stock Surface Pro. However, according Panos Panay, the leader of the Surface team at Microsoft, such region-specific SKU won't happen anywhere else, unless strong enough consumer interest is shown.

A fan snapping the opening event with a Windows Phone

Last night, Microsoft finally kicked off the Surface RT here in New York City and they did so with great enthusiasm.

We were there for the event, which kicked off at about 9:45PM EDT right in the middle of Times Square.  Some folks had begun lining up earlier that day and Microsoft gave them some free Surface jackets for their trouble. The line itself had a few hundred people and it took about nearly two hours just to get into the Store as they had it very controlled--only a specific number of people could enter at a given time, pending others exiting.
