product placement

Microsoft has signed a deal with UK broadcaster Channel 5 to have its Surface family of Windows tablets advertised on the popular TV show Big Brother. While the reality show may not be the ideal program for Microsoft to show off its new gadgets, Big Brother will be taking on a technological theme for this year, making Surface tablets fit in perfectly. The products will be featured through the show with the product placement agreement signed.

It’s been awhile since we’ve covered some obvious product-placement shots and this time, it’s not too different as US broadcaster CBS is once again at the forefront. The show, or rather mini-series, is Stephen King’s adaptation of “Under the Dome”, which has a group of people suddenly cut off from the rest of the world as a literal invisible dome suddenly surrounds their town.

The show is classified as sci-fi/horror and we just finished watching part 3 last night. Truth be told, it’s been pretty great so far and if you have Amazon Prime, you can watch it on there for free (we recommend it).

It's another music video, another Lumia Windows Phone and another product placement. Oh come on, we know you love these feel good articles! This time we're visiting Kelly Clarkson and her new single, "People Like Us." The yellow Lumia 920 has been utilised in the video, but what is it all about? Honestly, I have no idea. It's late so the brain is shutting down for the evening, but I do know Clarkson likes her BMW Z4.

It's at 0:22 in the latest pop video from Jennifer Lopez where we see a shiny new Lumia 920, which sports a bold Windows Phone styled SMS conversation between herself and fellow artist Pitbull. The song is called "Live It Up" and comes with a rather bouncy video. We've previously covered Windows Phones being used in music videos, with the HTC TITAN in Fun.'s "We Are Young" being the most notable example.

The Lumia920 Lumia 900 has been spotted in the trailer for an upcoming movie - Olympus Has Fallen. Featured at the 2:09 marker, the white Windows Phone looks massive in the hands of a female actress in a clean environment. Nokia has kicked off an intensive Lumia marketing campaign to promote its fairly expansive family of Windows Phones in supported markets.

The Lumia 920, Nokia's flagship Windows Phone has been spotted in an episode of House of Lies, a US comedy / drama television programme. The red variant of the device can be seen clearly in the photo above, displaying the call screen in Windows Phone 8. It's a unique colour to use in product placement since the white, cyan and black Lumia Windows Phones are generally pushed by mobile operators and retailers.

Update: And oddly enough the video has be retro-edited to remove the Lumia 920. We're not sure why but you can see the original version here and the edited one below. Thanks, nikhilr51.

The Lumia 920 in yellow has been featured in a Ke$ha music video. The song Die Young shows off the Lumia 920 for a few seconds with a male making use of call functionality, while the artist herself reads an SMS.

"What?! How do I use this alien technology?!"

The Nokia Lumia Windows Phones seem to be making the cameo rounds these days.  Earlier what appears to be a Lumia 800 showed up on the set of the upcoming movie "The Wolverine" and now a Nokia Lumia (we believe it's a 900 in costume) has been spotted in the U.S. television show, The Neighbors. What's great about the above capture is facial expressions and the ability to add an alien-related caption to bring it in line with the storyline from the show.

We've previously looked at Windows Phones being featured in a media, particularly the music video for Fun. - We Are Young, which we to this day still receive tips on. We're going to need OEMs and Microsoft to go out in a full scale attack with product placement when Windows Phone 8 launches.

The advertisements, not only for Windows 8 and Microsoft's Surface, but Windows Phone will be on the big screens, where couch potatoes will be able to enjoy the sight of new Lumias or HTC hardware. Who knows, Samsung might even ... actually, it was wishful thinking, I know.

Thanks, Steve, for sending in the tip!

Lumia 800 is the Wolverine?

We’re not sure which Nokia Lumia we see in the above pic, captured for Hugh Jackman’s upcoming ‘The Wolverine’ sequel, but that metal Carl Zeiss strip certainly gives it away.

What is odd about it of course is the color (drab green) and the flash position (it’s on the top as opposed to being adjacent). For those reasons, we’re not sure if we’re looking at a prototype, something just for the movie, an odd looking case or something else. In fact, we can’t say much more though we’ll leave some sleuthing to you folks in comments to try and deduce something. [Edit: And yes, it looks to be the Lumia 800 as that is the only one with the flash like that.]

Hey, who you calling cheap?

The Canyons (IMdB) is a new film coming out in 2013 from writer Brett Easton Ellis (American Psycho), long-time director Paul Schrader (American Gigolo, Affliction) and stars Lindsey Lohan. The new trailer is a spoof off of 1970’s grindhouse, low budget films, which is sort of interesting but of course what caught our eye is the Windows Phone.

Sure, product placements are a dime a dozen but it’s still kind of neat to see what looks to be a Lumia 710 (?) used for a key scene in the movie.  Exposure is exposure. Full trailer is after the break. Thanks, HikiSpray, for the tip

The Nokia Lumia 900 as seen on Elementary (CBS, 2012)

We haven’t had too many reports sent in from readers on Windows Phone TV sightings, so it’s refreshing to see one for the Lumia 900.

CBS is set to launch their new show called ‘Elementary’, which evidently is a modern US-based take on Sherlock Holmes. Starring Jonny Lee Miller as Holmes and Lucy Liu as Watson, the pilot airs on September 27th though you can watch some clips online now (we haven’t checked Hulu yet).

Well, well, well. Would you look at that? An extremely attractive upcoming title from Ubisoft was unveiled yesterday with a handful of trailers being released on the web. The above introduction trailer gives us a tease at the foundations of Watch Dogs without revealing much at all (be sure to look at the gameplay video for more details).

But this is Windows Phone Central, so we have to tie in Windows Phone somewhere regarding this console and PC title, right? Correct, check out the above trailer and be sure to pay close attention at 2:14 onwards. You'll witness the camera pan out revealing what appears to be a Windows Phone. Take a look at our still image below for a clearer view of the time in the system tray and "more apps" arrow.

While not major news, and the smartphone used in the game video demonstration sports a grid layout of app icons, it's a little something to wrap up an eventful Microsoft appearance at E3.

Thanks to Mark, Xavier and Ronny for the tips!

Campaign Live has reported Nokia signing a product placement deal with UK television soap opera Hollyoaks, that will see Lumia Windows Phones being used and promoted in a number of episodes. The show will have characters using the Lumia 800 and 710 Windows Phones with Monster Purity headphones. The village bus stop will also sport Lumia advertisements, starting from July.

As well as the TV promotion, Lumia Windows Phones will be displayed on other platforms that stream the programme, including the Channel 4 website which will reportedly see the devices come to life with two Hollyoaks characters tweeting their on-screen personality. The deal is set to last for an initial four-month period. John Nichols, head of marketing at Nokia UK, had the following to say on the deal:

"This partnership is another example of how we are pushing the Lumia brand in new innovative ways, with a human approach across multiple platforms."

This is a superb move by Nokia as the show is popular with a strong young audience, something the company has admitted it needs to target to rejuvenate the brand.

Well, if there's one thing we learned tonight it's that a lot of you watch Kiefer Sutherland's "Touch" series on Fox, at least judging by the amount of tips we received. Evidently tonight was the two-part season finale (yes, the show was renewed) and the main child prodigy gets his hand on a cyan Lumia 900. What's more, the scene is fairly long by product-placement standards, resulting in some nice screen time for the hit device on AT&T.

Also note the appearance of the AT&T AirGraffiti app for Windows Phone. For those of you who don't know, AirGraffiti was a concept app from AT&T that allows users to "...leave videos, photos and songs “in the air” at physical addresses for friends or others to retrieve when they visit that location". It's a very cool concept that uses the phone's media resources, social networking and Location Based Services (LBS).

AirGraffiti on Windows Phone?

No word though is that app is actually coming to Windows Phone or AT&T and Nokia are just teasing the hell out of us. Let's hope it's the former as that'd be a very cool win.

Anyway we managed to get a video clip of the appearance on the show--there were two scenes--and we mixed 'em and posted 'em for you to peep. The video is on SkyDrive and if you're wondering why it's not on YouTube, you can blame their Draconian copyright enforcement.

Besides Flo Ridia (who digs the Lumia 900) it looks like French act M83 also has a hankering for the glossy-white Nokia Lumia 800. The phone makes a brief appearance in the new video for "Reunion" and while the cameo is not as involved as Flo Rida's, the phone is still clearly displayed for a few moments before the bald gent grabs it.

Though clearly not a full on commercial, it's still nice to see the Lumia 800 seeping into pop culture in these short, almost hidden appearances. Plus M83 is pretty good (though we still like their earlier work better, ahem).
