Windows Phone Game Review: Quick Shift

Quick Shift is a puzzle game for your Windows Phone that not only challenges your powers of observation but your speed. The game presents you with a five by five grid of numbered tiles (numbered 1-5). Your job is to find number straights that run vertically or horizontally.

Each round is timed and you have a target score to meet before you can advance to the next level. The challenge comes with a secondary timer that will shift the tiles every eleven seconds. At the end of the eleven seconds, your straights are collected and points awarded.  It takes a little time to catch the hang of Quick Shift and you've got to be quick at the touch.  All in all, Quick Shift isn't too shabby.

Windows Phone Game Review: Permutile2

Permutile2 is a new puzzle game that has landed over in the Windows Phone Marketplace. You swap tiles around the game board to find their targeted position. Permutile2 supports single player, two-player and you vs. the computer mode. With the single player you try to get all the tiles into the right position in the least amount of moves. With the two-player or vs. computer mode, you try to get more tiles into position than your opponent.

Add four levels of play and up to five board or grid sizes and Permutile2 has plenty of gaming to keep you challenged. Game play is simple yet challenge and the Permutile is well presented from the graphics to the menu layout. It's a nice puzzle addition to the Windows Phone game line up.

Ready for a deal? Implode! - the Xbox Live Deal of the Week, has officially gone on sale for $1.99. Not a bad price for such a lengthy game!

Implode! takes place in a classroom setting with each puzzle drawn on a chalkboard. The goal: blowing up buildings as efficiently as possible. Over the course of 150 levels, you’ll get to use a variety of different explosives and face many challenging conditions such as wind, low gravity, and neighboring buildings that mustn’t be harmed. I hate those buildings! Don't they know you have to break a few eggs to make an omelette? Anyway, as our review indicates, Implode!’s puzzles get quite tough sometimes, but it remains fun throughout.

Implode! is on sale for $1.99 (down from $2.99) for one week only. Pick it up here in the Marketplace and let the explosions commence.

Gears - App Spotlight

Gears hit the Windows Phone Marketplace a short bit ago and if you like puzzle games, you've gotta check it out.

The game premise has you completing the connection between two gears and provide power to the bronze gear. Sounds simple but you have a limited number of various sized gears to work with and at times you are required to turn the bronze gear a certain way. To add to the challenge you have this pesky little thing called gravity that won't allow you to place your connecting gears just anywhere.

The game screen has your connecting gear inventory displayed at the bottom, a reset button and your current level.  Once you accomplish connecting the two gears, you advance to the next level.

Gears has one hundred levels of play, with more on the way, and the only nit I can find with Gears is with how the levels are displayed.  As is, the screen looks crowded and you need a magnifying glass to read the numbers.

Regardless, Gears is an entertaining, addictive, well presented game. Graphics are great, sound effects nice and the game ran smoothly.

There is a free trial version available for Gears that has the first twenty levels of play available. The full version of Gears will run you $1.99 and you can download either here (opens Zune) at the Marketplace.

Spinballs Special Edition - Review

If you're looking for a bubble buster type game with a twist (or in this case spin), check out the Windows Phone game Spinballs Special Edition. Spinballs SE is very similar to the original Spinballs game but adds an additional gaming mode (more on this in a bit).

The object of the game is simple, line up three or more of the same colored balls to have them explode off the screen. The twist or spin in this case is that the balls are placed on seven spinning wheels.

Throw in two game modes, four bonus items, a pesky timer and you've got a decent game on your hands. Spin on past the break to read more about Spinballs SE.

Shut The Box - App Spotlight

Looking for an interesting game for your Windows Phone? Shut The Box is being offered over at the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace that is an Old English puzzle game.  It's a simple, yet challenging game.

You have your box, a pair of dice, and tiles (or shutters) numbered one through nine. The object of the game is to turn down all the tiles. You do so by rolling the dice and turning down the corresponding tiles that equal the sum of each roll. When you roll the dice with a sum that won't drop any tiles, game over.

It's a simple game that has a Yahtzee feel to it. Shut the Box has fantastic graphics and is an enjoyable way to pass the time with. Shut The Box also includes a statistics page so you can evaluate your performance and a settings page that includes a Move Hints settings. This is a good feature to help you learn the game strategy.
