Radar

Weather Radar Tile is an interesting Windows Phone 8 weather app that not only allows you to access weather forecasts and radar, but also pin a radar tile to your Windows Phone Start Screen.  The radar Live Tiles are not animated but do update periodically to give you a snap shot of what's headed your way. Weather forecasts and radar are provided through the National Weather Service and locations are U.S. only.

Weather Radar Tile isn't a bad Windows Phone 8 app but navigation isn't the smoothest. The app is worth a try but may not appeal to everyone.

Rain Alarm for your Windows Phone is a weather radar app that can alert you of rain or snow through push notifications.

The main view of Rain Alarm is your typical map with the latest weather service radar displayed. Radar imagery is animated and can be paused or refreshed with the control buttons at the bottom of the screen.

Rain Alarm is a fairly simple app but may come in handy if you want to avoid the wet stuff while traveling or just don't want to caught off guard.

If you're looking for a very good, entry level Windows Phone and don't necessarily need a Windows Phone 8 device, Groupon has a deal for you. They are offering an unlocked HTC Radar for $172.99.

The 3.8" screened device sports a 1GHz processor, 8GB of storage, a 5MP rear camera with BSI sensor and is GSM carrier compatible.  It may not have all the bells and whistles of other Windows Phones but overall, the Radar is a solid performer.

One of the “forgotten” phones on T-Mobile seems to have been the awesome and site favorite HTC Radar. We say that only because it has yet to receive the 8773 ‘Tango’ update like a lot of other Windows Phone, including its non-branded international counterpart.

We’ve now had two reports coming in noting that replacement phones for the Radar have ‘Tango’ in ROM:

  • OS version: 7.10.8773.98
  • Firmware revision number:1750.0602.40602.531

There’s no word of course when or if T-Mobile will push out the update for the rest of you who still have working Radars but we think it’s a positive sign that fresh-from-the-factory versions are coming with a T-mo approved new ROM.

Although Tango is a minor update, it does feature such things as multiple MMS messaging and other minor improvements to the user experience in addition to the optimized new firmware from HTC to fix any other performance issue that may be nagging users.

We checked our Zune Desktop and did not notice any awaiting updates (even when we “forced” it using the Wi-Fi trick) so don’t get too excited yet. We’ll try to find out more though so keep your fingers crossed in the meantime. Thanks, Andre for the photo and ICMIAMI05, for the info

Windows Phone App Review: WeatherPro

There's little argument that there is no great shortage of Weather apps for your Windows Phone these days.  WeatherPro is one such Windows Phone app that was recently updated and after receiving several requests, we took a peek at it. With regards to features, WeatherPro is a notch above your basic weather app by providing both forecast information and animated weather radars.

Weatherpro is a nice app but its weakness rests within its navigation. While you can find what you're looking for fairly easy, there's a little inconsistency in how certain screens react.  It's nothing detrimental but rather something that I couldn't help but feel could be better.  The update (version 2.0) brings live tiles into the mix and mangofies the app, all of which helps WeatherPro's overall impression.

WeatherPro isn't a bad weather app, I just expected more for the $2.99 price tag.

While third party desktop cradles are available for the HTC Titan and Radar (here's our review of the Mobi cradle), we haven't seen a massive distribution of the HTC cradles for these Windows Phones here in the States.

One such place you can find both the HTC Titan Cradle (CR S600) and the HTC Radar Cradle (CR S610) is over at Expansys USA. Not sure if these are European imports or are U.S. models.

Nonetheless, the cradle for the Titan can be found here and the Radar's cradle here. Both are running $38.99. If you know of any other vendors carrying the cradles, feel free to sound off in the comments.

Thanks, Clifton, for the tip!

While we are still awaiting patiently for HTC to release the desktop cradle (or should I say "become widely available"?) for the HTC Titan and Radar Windows Phones, a few third party vendors have release their version of the cradle. The Mobi Products Desktop Cradle is offered over at the WPCentral Accessory Store for both Windows Phones and we recently took one out for a test drive with the Titan.

Telus and Rogers both have Nokia's Windows Phones (the Lumia 800 and 710 respectively) on their shelves and product list pages, but what about HTC Mango handsets? We've just caught wind (pun non-intended) of Wind Mobile offering the HTC Radar 4G (our review) from just $99 on their WINDtab+ service.

WINDtab+, which is where a 'tab' is created that the customer pays off 10% of of their bill per month (e.g.: monthly bill of $40, $4 extra will be charged a month to go towards the tab to pay for the handset), provides consumers a convenient way to afford and wield smartphones.

This is superb news for Canadians, who (not so long ago) were cursing at both Microsoft and carriers for not having a good selection of Windows Phones for consumers. As you can see in the above photo, Wind Mobile is advertising the HTC Radar in newspapers illustrating the attractive price.

Head on over to Wind Mobile's website to check out plan pricing and other details. It should be noted that Wind Mobile operates their service on AWS bands, though the carrier does hold a roaming arrangement with Rogers for areas outside its coverage, as well as T-Mobile for the U.S.

If you own a T-Mobile HTC Radar 4G, check your phone for updates. We are getting reports that T-Mobile has begun distribution of the Windows Phone 8107 update today.

The 8107 update will improve the proximity sensor and Gmail contact sync as well as correct problems with visual voicemail, Microsoft security and the Arizona time zone.

You should receive a pop-up message alerting you of the update or you can connect to your Zune desktop client and check for the update under the phone's settings. The update will bump your software version to v7.10.8107.79. Let us know in the comments if you've gotten the update and any additional tweaks it may hold.

Dare we hope that AT&T's update will be next?

T-Mobile has an awesome sale starting up on December 17th, and ending on the 18th. For just two days, 4G handsets stocked by the carrier will be available for purchase for $0 after a mail-in-rebate. A few Windows Phones are included in this deal, the HTC Radar and HTC HD7. Handsets require a two-year contract (qualifying Value Plan) to be taken out, but for Christmas, a brand new 4G Windows Phone with a packed plan is a perfect present.

HTC Radar 4G tapped Best of 2011

Tech website IGN has named the HTC Radar 4G Windows Phone one of the best smartphones of 2011. It joins the iPhone 4S, Motorola DROID Razr and the Samsung Galaxy Nexus as the best smartphones for the year.

IGN doesn't get into why they choose the HTC Radar but we won't disagree with their choice. We have been impressed with each of the new Windows Phones that have hit the market over the past few months and the Radar is not an exception.

From the quality 3.8" screen to the uni-body design, many will find the HTC Radar appealing. It is a base or entry level Windows Phone so we can't knock it for having 8gb of storage but recognize that some may want a little more storage.

With the Samsung Focus S reaching CNET's Top Five list, the Nokia Lumia winning the What Mobile Award for Mobile of the Year, IGN's ranking of the HTC Radar and the Windows Phone OS taking the Know Your Mobile Operating System of the Year award it would appear Windows Phone is getting a healthy share of the spotlight.

For those of you on Tele2 looking for a killer deal, may we direct your attention towards this offer for the HTC Radar? The Swedish based carrier evidently just got the Radar in stock and they're going all out by offering it for 244 SEK a month (on a 24 month contract) and they'll also throw in an Xbox 360 Slim plus the popular game Forza. Huzzah!

This isn't the first time we've seen Xbox 360's given away with Windows Phone--in fact Singapore offered free gaming systems to the first 100 people who bought the Lumia 800. The HTC Radar, while a mid-range phone, is one of favorites around here at WPCentral (see review), so we recommend those even with the slightest interest to perhaps take a close look at this deal.

T-Mobile Radar 4G's software update

And since the international HTC Titan received an update this morning, we finally got around to updating our U.S. T-Mobile Radar 4G which is getting its first firmware refresh too (the unlocked version received one a few weeks ago). Here are the software changes.

  • Firmware - 20102 (old - 10802)
  • Bootloader - 2.1 (old - 1.8)
  • Radio - 03.17_ 16.27.00 (old - 02.09_2_16.24.00)

It seems clear that HTC is moving to a 2.x bootloader and 2.x firmware for both the Titan and Radar, meaning the AT&T Titan could very well get a refresh soon too.

The update took about 20 minutes and we even gained a teeny amount of space back (see above) which was kind of nice. There's no word either on what this addresses, but presumably its for performance and fixes--some of which we hope to find in the next few days (lets us know if you notice any).

Also, the international version of the HTC Radar, at least on T-Mo in the Netherlands, received a software refresh yesterday too:

  • Firmware - 20103 (old - 10902)
  • Bootloader - 2.1 (old - 1.9)

Thanks, HPDeskjet, for the info

Beginning tomorrow, T-Mobile will be pushing out an update for their HTC Radar and HD7 phones.  The update adds a boost in performance and will resolve an error that occurs when some users try to activate Visual Voicemail.  While the Radar will also get the ability to download and customize ringtones, the real winner is the HD7, which will now connect to hidden WiFi networks and gain WiFi tethering.  Some folks, however, claim that they were able to tether after the previous update.

The patch will start making its way out into the ether tomorrow and must be installed via the Zune software to a USB-connected handset.

T-Mobile is offering the HTC Radar 4G for free today but that's not the only place the Windows Phone was being given away. The Ellen Degeneres Show is having a 12 Days of Giveaways event where audience members get a free gift or gifts. Twenty-five viewers are also selected from on-line registrations and will also receive the gifts.

Day one and two appeared to be dominated by gift cards but Day Three was heavily sponsored by Microsoft. The giveaway landed an Xbox Live with Kinect, an Acer laptop, a Beats headset, a Go Pro video camera, an HTC Radar and six months of service through T-Mobile (check around the 2:38 mark).

All in all the gift package was valued over $2,700 and made a lot of studio audience members happy. It is also pretty good exposure for Microsoft.  No clue as to what the remaining nine days of giveaways will bring but if you're feeling lucky you can register here at the show's website.

T-Mobile has the HTC Radar (our review) listed on their website for free, when taking out a two-year contract. Note that this is a web-only deal, so be sure to make the purchase online. Should you be interested, act now as the deal is set to end today. Sporting a 5MP camera, 1Ghz processor, 8GB storage and a 3.8" screen, the Radar is a perfect Mango handset for Christmas.
