Windows Phone Central's Roundup of Go To Games

This week's Roundup deals with Go To Games for your Windows Phone. For the lack of a better term, Go To games are the ones that always find their way on to your Windows Phone and really never grow old. These games are amongst your favorites but always seem to rise to the top of that list. They are the games you go to for entertainment that are great time wasters that never disappoint.

The Windows Phone Central staff were polled on which two gaming titles are their Go To Games. We see a lot of games come and go on our Windows Phones but these titles seem to always be around. The Roundup contains a wide range of games that include a beauty salon, chickens and rainbows as well as a healthy selection of Xbox Live titles.

Windows Phone Central's Roundup of Rainbow Rapture styled slider games

While there are a wide range of games available for your Windows Phone, we've chosen one genre for this weeks roundup that are popular, challenging time wasters. For the lack of a better term, we're tagging this type of game as sliders.

These games have you navigating a character by sliding and jumping across hill and dale. Rainbow Rapture may be the most popular of these games but there are a few others that are great ways to pass the time.

As always, if a gaming title didn't make the roundup it doesn't mean the game should be avoided at all costs. If we missed a game that is your favorite slider game, feel free to speak up in the comments.

Rainbow Rapture (free and paid) just received a huge Mango update today and boy is it impressive. Sure, we love the game as much as the thousands of others (4.5 stars out of 926 reviews) but guess what? The developer evidently loves us by giving us some awesome new features in both versions:

  • Fast app switching
  • Improved frame-rate (60FPS)
  • Live Tile
  • Added level 12 & 13
  • Fixed leaderboard crash bug

And the paid version gets even more with three ringtones (music from the game) and two custom wallpapers. Do you know how cool it is to have that theme song as your ringtone? We're totally thrilled with this update and at 60FPS, this game looks spetacular and plays even more smoothly.

Bravo to Kindling for putting out such a rewarding update. Pick up the paid version ($1.49) here in the Marketplace or the free, ad-supported version here.

We're big fans of Rainbow Rapture (see video and app spotlight), the free game about a rapacious cloud/rainbow who decides to devour humanity. It has catchy music, smooth graphics, achievements and online scores. What's not to love?

Well, ads.

While ads keep a game free, sometimes we're okay with paying for an app to not have 'em and so Rainbow Rapture Free now has a kid brother for a $1.49--ad free and now cloud has some interesting rants while chowing on the peeps.

If all of this sound enticing, then head here for the new paid, ad-free version. Of course the free version is still available too.

Rainbow Rapture - App Spotlight

Looking for a unique game for your Windows Phone? Rainbow Rapture should be unique enough for most and turns out to be a fun game.

The story line goes that the our rainbow character is unhappy with humanity and has decided to wipe everyone out. The object of the game is to consume as many humans and travel as far as you can. You control the flight of the rainbow by touching the screen to have the rainbow dive and release the touch to have it soar. You use hills and valleys to give the rainbow a little speed which results in more hang time.

You do have an energy meter to the left of the main screen that needs to be replenished by maintaining a healthy diet of people, objects and air time. Once the energy meter goes out, so does your rainbow.

Rainbow Rapture has an online leaderboard so you can compare your carnage and travel distance to others. At first, you'll feel a little uncoordinated in controlling the rainbow but once you get the timing down, the game is really fun.

Rainbow Rapture is a free, ad-supported game that you can download here at the Windows Phone Marketplace.

Thanks goes out to @SassyBob for the suggestion.

Game spotlight: Rainbow Rapture [Video]

We love silly games. Especially when they're good. And free. Rainbow Rapture by Kindling meets all of these criterion. The premise? "Rainbow is unhappy with the way things turned out down below. He wants a clean slate. Help him wipe humanity off the face of the Earth."

Awesome.

The game has strong, bold graphics, smooth gameplay, a catchy jingle and high re-playability, making it our new addiction. It's like those jumper games, but instead you need to try to go a certain distance, all while catching mad air and eating people.

We would like to see some type of leaderboard system thrown in for extra value and perhaps some achievements--even if those are for a paid version of the app, it'd add extra value to an already strong title. Still, being free, we really like this little game. At first, the controls are a bit strange, but after a few tries, mastery is possible.

Pick it up here in the Marketplace (Zune link).
