Which Windows Phone are you getting on April 8th?

With today's announcement of both the HTC TITAN II ($199 on contract, $549 off) and the Nokia Lumia 900 ($99 on contract, $449 off) being available on April 8th (online) and April 9th (stores), the question naturally arises: Which one are you getting?

We have a feeling that due to the hype, the Nokia will win here (and by a large margin) but the HTC TITAN II is no slouch either what with its 4.7" screen, 16MP camera and 4G LTE--heck, the original TITAN is one of our favorite phones -- ever -- so all of those "new" features look to make it a winner.

Anyways, you know the drill: Vote up above and tell us your reasons below. Go!

AT&T has officially announced availability dates for both the Nokia Lumia 900 and the HTC TITAN II in a press release sent out today. The TITAN II is also set to join the 900 and be launched on April 8th, for $199.99 on contract. Should you be on the network and awaiting solid second generation handsets, the choice of the TITAN II or Lumia 900 is certainly an intriguing one.

The HTC TITAN II, a 4G LTE Windows Phone, packs a 4.7" LCD display, 1.4Ghz chip, 16MP rear camera, 512MB RAM and 16GB storage space. The handset is also heading to Telstra in Australia in early April as well, with some UK stores removing the original TITAN from product lists - we could be seeing a global rollout later in April.

To celebrate the launch of the Lumia 800 in Denmark, Nokia and carrier Telia have teamed up to pull off an interesting stunt - the "Human Keyboard". We've previously seen the scale of the country's Lumia handset launch with an event being held in Copenhagen back in January, but it's good to see carrier support added in.

The Human Keyboard features a keyboard mat laid out on the pavement in front a store. We then have five musicians stood in the store window who play corresponding music notes with instruments in the attempt to match the members of public who step on the mat.

Of course, you'd have to have some fun and try to trick the musicians, which is exactly what we see in the above video. You can purchase the Lumia 800 in cyan at the Telia online store.

We first told you that AT&T was planning on an April 8th (online) and 9th (stores) release for the Lumia 900 and sure enough, it's accurate. Since that report we've had numerous tips from store employees on the matter all stating the same dates, so we think it's safe to call it now.

Reader David just returned from an AT&T store where an employee had both phones (black and cyan, see above) to toy with. Here are his thoughts:

"Also, the matte finish on the back cover makes the phone feel SUPER nice in hand and you only notice the 4.3" screen with one-handed use.  Also, with its' rectangular corners and flat front/back panels, the pocket is a really nice place for it to go about the day with you. Nokia did a really awesome job with this one and I can't wait for April 9 to get here!"

Indeed. From our hands on experience (see here), the Lumia 900 is set to impress and with the April 9th launch date confirmed, it should be an exciting Easter for many of you, so long as you start saving your pennies now.

The Nokia Lumia 900 features a 4.3" AMOLED screen, 1.4GHz CPU, 1830mAh battery (non-replacable), 16GB of storage, 8MP rear and 1.3MP front cameras with 4G LTE support. It is expected to sell for $99 on contract. Online orders should start Sunday, April 8th with in-store availability April 9th. No word on full-price yet.

Thanks, David, M., for the tip

Microsoft and Nokia are set to launch the Chinese Lumia 800 ("Lumia 800c") earlier than planned, according to an insider informed WPDang article. The Windows Phone platform itself officially launched yesterday with the goal of regaining markshare by releasing "Tango" and hardware from the likes of Nokia, HTC (Triumph) and ZTE (Orbit/Mimosa).

The Lumia 800c is a CDMA variant of the Lumia handset (think Verizon and Sprint), is set to power Windows Phone Tango, and will be available in black, cyan and magenta on China Telecom. The original date of availability for the Lumia 800c in China was late March / early April. Unfortunately, the Lumia Momentum Map that Nokia has published (and relatively up-to-date) on their website does not display any information regarding the Chinese launch of Lumia Windows Phones.

As well as the 800c, Nokia is also believed to be launching the 710 and the WCDMA version of the Lumia 800 next month. Keep an eye out in the remaining weeks of March for more details surrounding the Lumia 800c.

It's no mystery that the Nokia Lumia 900 is close to being released here in the U.S. Our latest info was (and still is) March 18th where the flagship device is expected to sell for $99 on contract.

We reported a few days ago that AT&T was gearing up for release with a "Coming soon" on their site. Many of you speculated in comments that this was probably related to the "new" iPad release but alas, AT&T has a new iPad page up and that "Coming soon" one is still there (it's the 2nd slide). Check and mate.

What's more, we have word from at least one developer that Nokia has already delivered some Lumia 900s to devs including the one that we spoke with. We're not sure what a dev (or Windows Phone site, ahem) has to do to get one of those 900s but evidently they are going out.

Finally, as reported on The Nokia Blog, Nokia is holding a job recruitment day in San Diego on March 15th for over 100 new positions at their offices located there. The all-day event will be peppered with, you guessed it, Lumia 900 giveaways every 30 minutes via a raffle.

All of that is telling us that the Lumia 900 is right around the corner. Will it be the 18th? We sure think so and hopefully something "official" will come forth soon.

Update: And like clockwork, we have word from BGR that the Lumia 900 on AT&T is delayed to Aprill 22nd. Sad Panda.

The HTC TITAN II and Nokia Lumia 900 are rumored to drop on Sunday, March 18th and last we checked it's getting close to that date.  Two things have happened within the last few hours to make us think that AT&T is starting up their Windows Phone gears again:

  1. The AT&T site is teasing something big as "Coming Soon" on their site with signups to be notified
  2. The Microsoft Windows Phone site now lists the TITAN II and Lumia 900 as "coming soon"

Sure, it's no firm pricing (Lumia 900 is rumored for $99) or official release date but c'mon, if those phone aren't launching in the next two weeks then we'll eat our vegetables. Start saving your pennies, folks.

It has been almost a year since we last heard of an official Qantas app being developed for Windows Phone at MIX '11 (see our wrap up for more details). We've now caught word from their Twitter account that the app, which has been somewhat-delayed, will be available this month (March).

Windows Phone owners who use Australia's flag carrier to hop between countries will be pleased to learn that development of the app is at a stage where it's ready to be submitted and / or approved. The Qantas Windows Phone app will enable users to view upcoming flight times, quickest routes to airports, check into a flight, and more.

We'll update with a follow-up post when the app has been released with more details (and screenshots) available, so keep an eye on this space.

Good news for those of you in the UK, tech site Mobile Fun is reporting that they have the dates for your new Nokia phones, the Lumia 900 and the Lumia 610, representing both the high and low ends of Nokia's new beachhead strategy.

The 900 featuring a 4.3" screen and front facing camera will reportedly land on April 9th--a date that's not too far off and seemingly in line with recent rumors.

Likewise, the Lumia 610 will is rumored to be available June 11th when it will launch with Windows Phone "Tango" to better support low-end specs such as 256 MB of RAM. That makes sense as it'll give developers a few months to re-structure their apps to meet those new low memory requirements as well as time for Microsoft/Nokia to finish any last minute touches to the OS.

By June, Windows Phone users should have quite the array of Nokia devices to choose from.

Good news Domino's Pizza lovers, the fine establishment has released a Windows Phone app (for the UK & Ireland) that conveniently allows users to order their favourite pizzas from the comfort of their handset. The Domino's iOS app is as aesthetically pleasing as they come, so our expectations are high with what can be achieved visually with the Metro UI. We have not been failed, as (can be seen above) the app is very good looking.

Should you be after drinks, sides, desserts, deals, or just the 13" beasts themselves, the Domino's Pizza app allows one to achieve this with style:

  • A Full Menu
  • Store Locator
  • All Meal Deals available
  • Ability to Customise Your Pizza with extra toppings or special requests
  • Payment via credit card, cash or on collection

The next version is already in the works that will introduce voucher usage, so we expect to see an update soon. You can download Domino's Pizza from the Marketplace for free, enjoy!

Thanks Carl for the tip!

Seems as though we've been taken by surprise with Wordfeud as the title is now available on the Marketplace. We previously looked at the app when the developers noted that they were looking at a February 1st release, but one could assume they couldn't wait much longer.

The multiplayer Scrabble clone comes packed with push notifications, Live Tiles, opponent chat, cross-platform support and more. Check out some highlighted features below:

  • Choose to play with friends or be matched up against random opponents
  • Play in 30 simultaneous games
  • Random board option to mix up the DL, DW, TL, TW tiles
  • Push notifications informing you of opponent's latest move
  • Uses English, Spanish, French, Dutch, Norwegian, Swedish and Danish dictionaries
  • Chat with your opponents

You can download Wordfeud from the Marketplace fully functional and free with ads or $2.99 with no ads. (Update: Link fixed)

We previously touched on Wordfeud close to the end of 2011 with an email reply from the development team who stated a Windows Phone version of the cross-platform multiplayer word game is on the way. Now we can see the app in action on a Nokia Lumia 800 in the above photo.

In the post over on the Wordfeud blog the team state that they're looking at a February 1st release. Good news for those who are awaiting this title.

This is a small update for those of you from South Africa that have been following the previous Nokia Lumia posts.

Previously we received a tip that the Nokia Lumia 800 would be available in South Africa sometime during the first quarter of 2012. Now Nokia has announced it officially and given a fixed date via their Facebook page. So how long do we need to wait? Well, not long at all. The Nokia Lumia 800 will be launching in South Africa on the 7th of February 2012!

I don't know how Nokia/Microsoft managed to make this possible, as South Africa is more often than not way behind the rest of the world (in terms of phone releases). But I know a lot of South Africans will be extremely excited to be able to get their hands on a Windows Phone 7, especially the Lumia 800. The official launch party is taking place on the 25'th of this month, and we will be there to report back!

Microsoft has come under fire more than once for the lack of communication between the team and consumers when it comes to updates rolling out for Windows Phone. Today Eric Hautala, General Manager Customer Experience Engineering, published an article on the Windows Phone team blog detailing changes that are in the pipeline that will change how we are kept up to speed on Windows Phone updates.

The Windows Phone website already details what updates are rolling out for each supported carrier (and country), but individual releases are also covered on the official blog and the "Where's my update?" page. In the coming months, Windows Phone users can keep up to date by checking the Windows Phone Update Central site for update information. Hautala explains,

"There are also a few changes on the way for the blog and website. As we continue our growth, we won’t be individually detailing country, model, and carrier details on the Where’s My Phone Update? site any longer. And instead of my weekly blog posts, the official Windows Phone website will be the primary place for news and information about our updates, just as Microsoft Answers is there for your support questions."

Hopefully this move won't stimey the flow of information on our Windows Phone updates.

As well as the above alterations, Hautala took a moment to thank all Windows Phone owners for the feedback the team has received surrounding the update process, which has helped them perform tweaks and enhancements. He encourages everyone to keep the cards and letters coming via the WindowsPhoneTeamSite, Twitter and Facebook.

The future is set to be fairly bright. Roll on CES 2012.

Update: The direct link is dead for some reason, but the article is still up on the main site.

Update 2: Link fixed

Wordfeud coming to Windows Phone

Wordfeud (Wordfeud.com), a cross-platform multiplayer word game, is coming to Windows Phone, according to an email sent from a member of the team. The game allows players to go up against other players at a personal pace. Multiple games can be played (as illustrated in the above screenshot) and multiple dictionaries are supported (English, French, Spanish, Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian, and Danish).

Snippet of the email response that was sent to WordFeudPro from the Wordfeud team a month ago:

"At this point we do not have any plans for a BlackBerry version of Wordfeud. This May change in the future though. However, we have started working on Windows Phone 7 version yesterday."

Good news for those who are fans of the game, be sure to keep an eye on the development blog for any articles or announcements relating to the Windows Phone app that may be published there.

In France, the Nokia Lumia 800 was set to be released widely on November 16th. Things change, though, and it looks like some customers of The Phone House in France have already been ordering the device through the online store, and are set to receive the phone by this Thursday or Friday. Since it is only Tuesday and deliveries aren't to be made until at least Thursday, we can't confirm that the devices are actually making it out to customers, but this tweet sent by @ThePhoneHouse should be reassuring (even if it is translated roughly using Google). They've already shipped the first Nokia Lumia to someone who ordered the device recently:

You can get the Nokia Lumia 800 of the Black or Cyan varieties from the web-store linked below for €99 with a contract, or €499 without. You can choose one of four carriers to be the home for your device: SFR, Virgin Mobile, Bouygues and Orange. If you do want to try to get the Nokia phone right now through The Phone House, let us know in the comments. You'll be among some of the first in the world to get what could be the most highly anticipated WP7 device released this year.

People of Armenia, lend me your ears. Nokia's Official Representative in Armenia, Vazgen Bakhshetsyan, has made the news pretty official - you will be getting the new line of Nokia Lumia WP 7.5 devices by the end of this year. That's right, before the US and most of the rest of the world has any dates for their release of the brand new Lumia 800 and Lumia 710, you now have a good excuse to start preparing for the coming Mango-powered phones. There are only two months left until the end of this year, so it won't be long before many of you anxious gadget-geeks of the small EurAsian country will have your thirst quenched and your hunger satisfied.

We've been in touch with Three UK after they announced stocking the Nokia Lumia 800. While the 16th has been announced as the date when the handset will be made available, it's interesting to note that (on Three UK at least) the carrier is only stocking the Cyan and Black colours of the 800 and the dates of availability seem to differ between the choice of colour:

  • Black Nokia 800 - 16th November
  • Cyan Nokia 800 - 28th November

Quite a large gap, we must say. Have you ordered the Nokia 800 and noticed a delivery delay elsewhere?

File this under "O2 you muppets" as it seems the carrier and Nokia couldn't reach an agreement on strict criteria including volume targets, store displays and marketing campaigns for the manufacturer's upcoming handset. I knew we could count on Nokia to push carriers in launching Windows Phone handsets with pride and force to match the iPhone and Android. O2 UK, enjoying a cosy partnership with Apple, could not agree with Nokia on the above due to the iPhone 5 launch just around the corner.

A source close to both O2 and Nokia told Mobile News:

"O2 is very good at handset marketing, better than any of the other operators, which tend to stick to promoting tariffs and deals. They work very well with the manufacturers and channel their message very well. But they are very close to Apple and will not look to compromise that relationship. O2 was initially very excited by the Nokia portfolio, but in recent weeks that attitude has changed."

Of course if O2 has had a successful run with the iPhone since the first generation device then it would make sense to focus on the iPhone 5, but to not allow each platform to compete with one another fairly for consumers to make their choice without bias marketing is poor (much like bias sales staff). Hats off to Nokia for putting their foot down. With Three UK looking to decide as to whether they will continue stocking Windows Phone handsets or not, it may prove worthwhile to approach the carrier (or Orange) since they could use some exclusive devices.
