One of our personal favorite applications for both Windows Phone and Windows 8, Nextgen Reader, is being listed free on the latter platform’s store. The Windows Store will have what is quite possibly the best RSS reader for the platform free, and it is only rumored to last for the remainder of today. As the app normally runs for $2.99 USD, it cannot hurt to pick it up now.

Readit is a sweet unofficial Reddit app for Windows Phone hardware, which we've covered in the past and even gave it our editor's choice for Reddit clients. While the 1.2 update released late November was a fairly sizeable update, the developer has published version 1.3 and has continued the trend of releasing rather long lists of changes.

Just like before, we've had to snatch the change log from Reddit since it's not posted within the app or Store (possibly due to length issues). Slide on past the break to check out what's new.

Windows Phone has been out for nearly three years, but there are still a handful of apps and services missing in the Store, at least in official form. Thankfully, we’ve got a strong community of devoted developers who take time to make a strong offering in the form of a third-party or alternative app. Phonly is an upcoming app on Windows Phone that will be a Feedly app on Windows Phone. One app that has been popular on Windows Phone for a very long time is Weave. The news app is always floating near the top of the “news + weather” section in the Windows Phone Store and easily maintains an average four star rating.

Seles Games, the developer of Weave for Windows Phone, is teaming up with Lazyworm Apps (MetroTube, Tweetro+) to bring Weave to the big screen – Windows 8. We met up with the guys from Lazyworm and had a first look at Weave this past week during //BUILD/.

Feed Me is a fantastic RSS Reader for our Windows Phones. But recently the app ran into a few technical difficulties with the NewsBlur feed.

As we understand it, NewsBlur changed its API which has in turn caused a few headaches. The developer has let us know they are feverishly working on an update that will right the ship. They are hoping to have a fix in place by the end of the week.

Good news for those who use Nextgen Reader for Windows 8 and Windows Phone. The team has announced on the official blog that their apps will support Feedly. This is the next major chapter in the Closure of Google Reader book. With the search giant shutting down its popular RSS service, apps that connect and synchronise are having to locate other services to remain operational.

There are always providers looking to capitalise on a single party's choice on withdrawing a popular service. If you're slightly confused by the title, fear not as that's describing the rather odd situation RSS fans have found themselves in. Google has announced that its popular (actually, industry leading) Reader service will be closing soon. It comes as no surprise that many Windows Phone consumers have wondered what will happen to Google Reader (and general RSS) apps that are already available on the store.

It's emerging that developers are working on ways to keep services live and to provide updates to such apps to better serve consumers. This is a win-win situation, folks.

Fuse newsreader by popular dev Rudy Huyn has finally been updated for those on Windows Phone 8. While no advanced features are taken advantage of e.g. rapid-resume or lockscreen goodies, the app now supports the doublewide Tile and 720P resolutions for devices like the HTC 8x or Samsung ATIV S.

Fuse has been one of the more popular newsreaders on Windows Phone and although its roots are borrowed from Pulse (who disappeared from our platform), it also went beyond that app to offer more unique “themes” and let’s be honest, better performance and developer support.
