sales

At times, the success of Microsoft’s latest operating system, Windows 8, can seem questionable. While Microsoft was able to sell over 240 million Windows 7 licenses a year after the software’s launch, Windows 8 is just beginning to see any figures close to that number. It has been fifteen months and Microsoft has just now acknowledged that they have sold over 200 million licenses.

Nokia released the company's Q4 2013 financial report earlier this week, revealing some rather disappointing data. Sales of Lumia Windows Phones were estimated to be lower in Q4 2013, compared to Q3. While Nokia failed to provide hard numbers in the report itself, the company did go on record to confirm the number of sales at 8.2 million units (compared to 8.8 in Q3). Then again, even the juggernaut Samsung Mobile had a rough time this quarter, meaning this isn't a Nokia anomaly.

Today, AdDuplex, one of the largest ad service providers for Windows Phone apps, has published a blog post attempting to analyse how the platform performed through the holiday season, compared to previous quarters.

On top of a stellar Red Stripe Deal this week (Chaos Rings), Windows Phone gamers have another Xbox game sale to tempt their wallets. 10 Electronic Arts games are on sale for 30-40 percent off.

The most exciting discount comes in Plants vs. Zombies, a terrific game that hardly ever goes on sale. Both it and Bejeweled Live are three bucks. A slew of games that regularly sell for $2.99 will ring up for $1.99 instead this week, including: Battleship, Blobster, The Game of LIFE, iBomber Defense (ugh), Jet Set Go, Spy Mouse, Tetris, and Yahtzee.

Hey all you penny-pinchers who decry the high prices that Square-Enix charges for its mobile role-playing games. This is your week. Thanks to the magic of the Xbox Red Stripe Deal, Chaos Rings, a game that has never gone on sale before, is now half off! $4.99 is certainly more palatable than $9.99, especially for one of the finest mobile RPGs in existence and single best games on Windows Phone.

The Red Stripe Deals continue to include six discounted games or apps per week in 2014 as opposed to last year’s three. This week’s haul consists mostly of games, with only a single app – Ipnos Software’s Relax Melodies Premium – on sale for 99 cents. The non-Xbox sale games include Chimpact from Yipee! Entertainment for 99 cents, Curling 3D from MaxNick (makers of Spider Jack) for $2.49, Iron Fist Boxing from Realtech VR for $1.49, and Shelter from Survivalist Games for 99 cents.

Microsoft has told TechRadar that the company is witnessing some serious growth for its Windows Phone platform. Christoper Flores, director of communications for Microsoft, told the publication that attacks on "both ends" of the smartphone market were well under way (high-end and budget mobile devices) and we can expect to see further aggressive marketing should the deal with Nokia go through.

At times, watching the launch for Microsoft's Xbox One gaming console was like watching a low rise car try to make it over speed bumps in a parking lot — painful. The company's public relations and marketing departments constantly tripped onto their faces when the answers to DRM concerns and piracy control were nowhere to be found.

A couple of months after the launch of Xbox One, not only am I enjoying my personal system, but so are 3 million other gamers and entertainment consumers around the world.

Xbox One is Microsoft's next-generation video console, which launched just shy of three weeks ago. The company has today announced that more than 2 million consoles have been sold to consumers worldwide, reportedly averaging over 111,111 (see what they did there?) units per day.

Microsoft previously unveiled some humorous, albeit rather pointless figures that included how many zombies have been slain in Dead Rising 3, as well as how many miles have been driven in Forza 5. We now have official numbers to play with when talking about the Xbox One launch and it's looking rather positive.

A few weeks ago, a bunch of Xbox Windows Phone games (mostly Nokia collection titles) went on sale at once. Nokia, who seems to have organized the sale, also announced that several more games would be discounted in early December.

Those titles (and a few more) are now on sale. We’ve got Contre Jour, Flight Control Rocket, Spy Mouse, Storm in a Teacup, Vampire Rush, and Zuma’s Revenge are all on sale for 99 cents. Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, which regularly sells for $4.99, has been marked down to $2.99. All seven games come from Electronic Arts and/or its subsidiaries Chillingo and PopCap.

Nokia's Q3 results show slight but steady Lumia growth

This morning, Nokia posted their Q3 results, detailing how well their Lumia line has been doing in addition to their other services. The bad news is overall, the company was flat quarter-on-quarter, with HERE sales down 9% due to seasonal variation. Likewise, NSN was also down 7%, again attributed to “seasonality”.

The good news though is regards to Nokia’s mobile phones, which includes Asha and Lumia. Generally, Q3 volumes were up 4% quarter-on-quarter to 55.8 million units, “demonstrating solid performance across the majority” of Nokia’s range of devices.

A couple of days ago we reported that pre-sales of the new Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 were doing very well, with stock running low on a few variations of the new hardware. Indeed, we can now confirm Microsoft wasn’t bluffing as the Surface Pro 2 (128 GB) is now listed as ‘out of stock’ through the Microsoft Store online.

It’s not clear how much initial inventory Microsoft planned for nor if the the 128 GB version will be replenished in the coming weeks. Presumably Microsoft can adjust manufacturing orders for the devices accordingly and we may see the 128 GB version come back online in the coming days.

Older Xbox Windows Phone physics puzzle game iBlast Moki is the Red Stripe Deal of the Week, and that’s cool. Wouldn’t you like some more games to go on sale though? Of course you would! And you’re getting your wish, buddy. Three more games have their prices knocked down to 99 cents for the week!

Don’t get TOO excited just yet though. The three sale games are all older Gameloft titles: Assassin’s Creed: Altair’s Chronicles, Brain Challenge, and UNO HD. All three games were just on sale in June, along with a larger selection of titles. But they cost two bucks at that time and only one buck now, so this IS a better sale.

Latest market share numbers from Russia's largest retailer puts Nokia ahead of Samsung

There’s nothing but positive results for Nokia and Windows Phone lately. Today, we’re continuing the momentum with news from Russia where Nokia has surpassed Samsung for market share. The story was first published in Vedomosti, Russia’s premier business paper

The data itself comes from Russia’s largest mobile retailer, Euroset, who have more than 5,000 stores across the vast country. Their latest report puts Nokia at 29% of the mobile market in Russia this summer, up from 27% in the spring. Samsung meanwhile has dropped to 27% from a previous 30% just a few months ago. That bump gives Nokia back the edge since Samsung beat them earlier this year (the two often go back and forth in terms of market share in the country).

Launching a new console usually ends in profit loses for the company who dares to be so bold. Past consoles, including Sony’s PlayStation 3 and Nintendo’s WiiU, had lost money when they first launched; the hope is to earn back the money in game and accessory sales as the years continue on. Microsoft doesn’t see profit loss in their future though; the company has planned to sell their console close to cost and avoid the financial loss that most companies incur.

Disney makes several fine games for Windows 8 and RT, but they’re all a bit pricey compared to their Windows Phone counterparts. Temple Run: Brave for instance, launched at $1.49 on Windows 8 but soon went up to $4.99. Actually, $4.99 is the regular price of all Disney tablet and PC games.

That’s why Disney fans will want to take advantage of the Disney Windows 8 sale going on this weekend. All of Disney’s non-Xbox games are on sale for $3.49, including the just-released Temple Run: Oz. Disney’s Windows Phone 8 titles are not affected by this sale. If there is one controversial area in regards to the stellar Nokia Lumia 1020, it would be its price. In the face of deals elsewhere like on Amazon.com, the $299 contract price is traditionally higher than most flagship devices in 2013. At least that’s the perception, even if erroneous. It’s a bit dishonest when tech sites focus on that subject since the AT&T 32GB iPhone 5 sells for the same $299 (and the 32GB Galaxy S4 runs for $249).

Last we checked, neither come with a groundbreaking 41MP camera.

Some could argue that the Lumia 1020 has no right to command the same price as the iPhone 5, but that seems a little pretentious for our tastes. Still, there’s a feeling in the air that the Lumia 1020 is not selling well or making much of an impact.
