The Skype team today announced worldwide availability of Skype for Outlook.com. Previously, the feature was only available in select regions as the team trialled Outlook.com functionality, but now we're pleased to report that Outlook.com users will now be able to easily connect with Skype contacts while checking through emails. To make the announcement that much sweeter, the Skype team has also included HD video calls.

We recently received reports that Microsoft would be slashing the costs of their Windows licensees by up to 70% in an effort to take on competitors in the lower end and tablet markets including Google’s Chrome OS and Apple’s iOS. The Redmond based company may take it a step further though, according to reports released today, Microsoft could be experimenting with a free version of Windows 8 and an alternative way of bringing in consumers.

Today is a good day. Step one in Skype becoming a universal messaging client has taken place. Oh I know, Skype already does a lot, but the user experience has been...less than friendly.

Specifically, I’m talking about the ability to sync messages – “read” versus “not read” – across devices and platforms. The situation should be familiar: you open up Skype on Windows Phone after chatting all day at the PC, only to have a barrage of “new” messages come in that you read hours earlier. It’s infuriating and time consuming if you have dozens of chat sessions.

Luckily, that hindrance should now be over through some backend updates from Skype.

The application itself isn’t yet perfect, and I constantly find myself having to jump into Google+ Hangouts to get multi-person conference calls done correctly, but that doesn’t mean the company isn’t working every day to make it better than the last. Recently an update has been pushed for Skype on Windows 8 – let’s take a look and see what has changed.

Microsoft’s acquisition of Skype may be seen as a positive move by many users within the ecosystem, as it brings modern communication to Windows, Xbox, and Windows Phone, but not everyone is keen to the idea. Cisco recently challenged Microsoft’s takeover of Skype Technologies. The challenge though, has been thrown out of the European General Court.

The Skype apps on Windows 8 and Windows Phone have been involved in a rather heated, yet slightly humorous discussion in the past. Microsoft originally made it so consumers could not close down the app completely on either platform, unless you rebooted or uninstalled the app.

Cartoonist Scott Adams has published the above Skype comic, illustrating just how annoying this problem was (and still is) for some.

We have seen bits and pieces of the dashboard for Microsoft’s latest entertainment console, Xbox One, but we haven’t seen a full immersive tour of it all. With Xbox One being released in less than a month, it definitely is a bit of an odd situation. Microsoft has heard our desires though, and released a full video showing a user interacting with the Xbox dashboard along with multitasking.
