SongArc

SongArc has long been one of our favorite games for Windows Phone, let alone our favorite music game, and now they're giving loyal players like yourself to help shape the game's future by joining in on a beta for the next version. The next verison of SongArc is promised to be "the biggest update ever". Version 2.0 of SongArc, a substantial update on its own, landed in December, so we're really looking forward to whatever developer András Velvárt is cooking up for this next update.

Today's app update roundup features a bit of both to round off our CES coverage (for Windows Phone Central anyway – the event continues). Head on past the break to see which apps and games are included in this roundup and what's new.

Besides the Instagram Beta update we reported on, it’s turning out to be a busy Tuesday morning as a whole horde of big name apps are getting updates on this day. Some fall under the rubric of the boring “general improvements and bug fixes” while others have a few more details. Regardless, as least you’ll know that some of your main apps are getting the treatment they deserve.

Let’s see who gets what in today’s Windows Phone app roundup.

It’s no secret that SongArc is one of our favorite games. It’s also quite popular with you guys and the Windows Phone community at large. It has north of a 500,000 users playing and is by far the most popular music game in the Windows Phone Store. A few weeks ago we gave you a sneak peek at the changes coming in version 2.0 of the game, which will be rolling out into the Windows Phone Store in the next few hours.

Windows Phone Central Gaming Roundup: The Next Big Thing

One of the helpful features of the Windows Phone Store is the Collections.  These are conglomerations of apps and games that fall in line with an underlying theme. Be it photography, shopping, sports or fitness these collections are a great place for one stop app/game shopping.

One gaming collection always seems to catch our eye is The Next Big Thing. It's a collection of games that the Windows Phone Store gate keepers see as having potential to hit it big.  It is also the focus of this week's Windows Phone Central roundup.

We spun the wheel and picked four of the games currently listed in this collection to highlight.  Three are very strong contenders for becoming the next big thing.  The fourth... well the fourth needs a little fine tuning but is on the right track as well.

SongArc is an indie game which we've covered numerous times in the past. The game itself is a product of AppCampus, the joint project by Nokia, Microsoft and Aalto University. So what exactly is SongArc? It's a music game that taps into the songs you love listening to for some addictive gameplay.

Enjoy the likes of Guitar Hero and other music jam / rhythm titles? You'll love SongArc for Windows Phone.

SongArc is a forthcoming rhythm game for Windows Phone users that we think could be a huge hit. We’ve covered the game in the past, even giving you a sneak peek of the gameplay. Think of Guitar Hero but tailored for Windows Phone and you’d be on the right track. By picking music from your library, you can load up sheets to enable a fast paced rhythm matching game, perfect for playing anytime.

It’s creative, it has a community aspect and it’s darn fun.

The last time we wrote about SongArc, it was just kicking off its beta program. That was nearly one month ago and over 450 of you managed to get in on that action. The game has now wrapped up its beta and it’s starting down the trek of getting certified in the Store (and AppCampus approval).

Windows Phone Central first brought you the news about SongArc, a music game that’s reminiscent of Guitar Hero and Audio Surf that will utilize your stored music for exciting gameplay. The game is the brainchild of Turtle Games, who make the popular game Rum Run and András Velvárt, who is the mind behind SurfCube 3D Browser and is an extension of the AppCampus project.

Tonight, we can give you an exclusive first look at the game in action.

We’ll be forthright: this game has all the makings for a hit arcade game on your phone. For one, it’s very well polished in the graphics department, with an eye catching and intuitive UI. Next up, you can bring your own music to the game—who doesn’t want that? Finally, if your song isn't programmed for play, you can just make a “sheet” for it and you’re good to go.

Music, fun and creativity? All checked off.

Years ago on the Zune HD we had a popular game called AudioSurf. It was at the time one of the first mobile music/rhythm games that allowed you to interact with your Zune’s music in no other way. Fast forward to 2013 and while we don’t have that game, we may have something even better coming: SongArc.

SongArc is a forthcoming, brand new title from two well-known developers: Turtle Games, who make the popular game Rum Run and András Velvárt, who is the mind behind SurfCube 3D Browser. It’s yet another genius creation from the AppCampus Project (a joint venture between Microsoft, Aalto University and Nokia) and it should be coming out in the next month.
