surface

There was a buzz in the air earlier this summer at Microsoft's Surface tablet announcement.  Anticipation built, and the excitement carried over to last week's launch with consumers hoping for an impressive device.

And that is just what Microsoft delivered.

After using the Surface for the past few days, our impressions of the tablet are good. The Surface is a well designed, comfortable to use, speedy little tablet. There is a slight learning curve but that was to be expected with a new operating system. While there is a learning curve, it's not too steep and shouldn't be too discouraging. If you are fortunate enough to have a Microsoft Store in your area, it takes the sales consultants just a few minutes to get you familiar enough with the system to get you started.

The Surface and Windows RT compliment each other rather well and the device itself is a nice supplement to your Windows Phone and Windows based computer.  If you've been waiting for an affordable, feature rich Microsoft tablet the wait is over with the Surface.

The Microsoft Surface comes pre-loaded with Internet Explorer 10 and the one thing that was odd (or at least for me) was the lack of an obvious way to save a website as a favorite.  I kept looking for a 'star" button to add sites to my favorites list.

The process of adding a website as a favorite ended up being rather simple. Just tap on the "pin" button and you'll find two options. First to pin the site to your Start Screen for easy access and second, to add the site as a favorite.

To access your favorites, just tap on the URL field to pull up a tile list listing of frequently visited sites as well as your favorites.

Only just unleashed last week, Microsoft’s Surface tablet is the talk of the town. If you were curious to know what it’s like on the inside, then now’s your chance to do so without wiping out your warranty.

The guys over at ifixit have taken to their torx screw drivers, guitar picks and hairdryer to get to those tasty innards. Let’s check out their findings.

Microsoft Surface RT Tip: Deleting Apps

So you have your brand new Microsoft Surface RT tablet and have a few games and apps loaded that you don't like. How do you go about deleting them?

From your Start Screen, just tap/hold the app tile and drag it towards the bottom of the screen. Move the tile just a bit and let go. When you release the tile, a menu bar pops up at the bottom of the screen with various options.

You'll see options to unpin the app, resize the tile, turn on/off Live Tile updates (app dependent) and to uninstall the app. Just tap that option, confirm the deletion and the Surface tablet takes care of the rest.

We have had a few of you send in photos from around the US today showing some MS Stores opening and sure enough, there are some crowds.

While none of it touches New York City and Times Square, it’s a good sign that quite a few people are interested in the Surface. And those kiosks seem like a great way to intercept people traversing stores in the mall.

A fan snapping the opening event with a Windows Phone

Last night, Microsoft finally kicked off the Surface RT here in New York City and they did so with great enthusiasm.

We were there for the event, which kicked off at about 9:45PM EDT right in the middle of Times Square.  Some folks had begun lining up earlier that day and Microsoft gave them some free Surface jackets for their trouble. The line itself had a few hundred people and it took about nearly two hours just to get into the Store as they had it very controlled--only a specific number of people could enter at a given time, pending others exiting.

Microsoft has issued an apologetic statement in an email sent out to those who have pre-orders standing for a brand new Surface RT, which is coupled with a £50 coupon code. The company admits to problems that confused consumers with misleading emails being dished out with bad news surrounding the delivery of Surface RT units. Originally it was expected the company would be able to hold deliveries between October 26-30.

Microsoft is committed to getting as many consumers on-board with its Surface Windows 8 tablets as possible. To help achieve this goal, the company is opening up a number of Surface Experience Centres where consumers will be able to get some hands-on milage with Surface hardware. There's nothing compared to actually using a product before making the purchase, right?

When Surface was first shown off it came with a dark and moody trailer but since then we haven’t seen anything like that.

Microsoft has just released a new commercial in a very similar style. Out with the dancing and in with the future tech theme.

The music sounds like the same used in the original trailer “Surface by Microsoft” and it has the same brooding tone. We’re not sure if this is mass market appeal here but will certainly sate the tech crowd who seem more switched on by these segments.

If you pre-ordered a Microsoft Surface RT and have yet to receive shipping confirmation, you may still be able to track your Surface shipment.  Even without a tracking number.

Here's how to go about doing it.

  • Just go to the FedEx or UPS websites and choose track package by reference.
  • Enter your Microsoft Order number and delete the "MS" prefix.
  • Leave the shipping date as the 24th and enter your destination Country and postal code.

If your Surface order has left the factory, your tracking information should pop up. To be honest, I was getting a little worried that my order status was still listed as "processing" with a delivery date listed as October 26th.  In tracking my order by reference, I was relieved to see that my Surface RT is still slated for Friday delivery.

Chime in down below in the comments if you've found your shipping information and head on over to this WPCentral Forums discussion on the Surface shipments.

Thanks, Mr. Brown and abond32, for the tip!

Time zones, these things are magical. Yes they can be quite confusing, and even stealing a day from your calendar or adding one to it without you knowing. But occasionally the difference in time could result in something sweet. In this case today, Suning, Microsoft's official sales partner for Surface RT in China, will commence the retail ahead of everyone else.
