T-mobile

While early reports had the Nokia Lumia 521 launch over at T-Mobile on April 24th, that date has come and gone with no new Windows Phone in sight. The reason, T-Mobile will now launch the Lumia 521 on April 27th during HSN.com's Innovation Weekend.  You'll need to check local listings for showtimes.

The Windows Phone 8 device will be bundled with a car charger and screen protector during the event for $149.99 with free shipping with a flex pay option available.

As a follow up to our earlier report about the T-Mobile Lumia 810 becoming unavailable for purchase (unless you want a refurb), we can confirm now that it has indeed been EOL’d (end of life) on the carrier.

It is instead being replaced by the not-so-bad Lumia 521, which also gets a release date for Wednesday, April 24th.

T-Mobile seems to be stoking the fires of their Windows Phone fans as the Lumia 521, their “custom” variant of the entry-level Lumia 520, is evidently nearing release.

In a tersely worded press release, T-Mobile announced that the phone will be coming in May and it will be available at Walmart, Microsoft Stores and of course T-Mobile locations for purchase. No pricing nor exact release date was given, but they will be forthcoming soon.

The other day, we doused some cold water on the rumor that the Nokia Lumia 810 on T-Mobile would get a firmware update to enable its LTE radio for that carrier. Seeing as the chipset is a SoC Snapdragon S4, it’s typical for such setups to have features there but not enabled (either by request, OEM choice or lack of proper APIs)—in other words, it’s totally plausible.

Reader of the site jgbstetson emailed the president and CEO of T-Mobile about the update and had his question pushed to the right people in the chain of command (much like Nokia, evidently you can get a response from the bigwigs at T-Mobile).

It was reported a few weeks back and evidently re-validated by Windows Phone Daily that the Nokia Lumia 810, a T-Mobile “exclusive” phone, would receive an over-the-air firmware update at some point to enable 4G LTE speeds.

What’s more, it’s been said that the 810 and not the HTC 8X would be getting this feature, a claim somewhat confirmed by a recent FCC filing for Nokia’s device. When the original report came out, it stated that the Galaxy Note II would also get such an update.

With all of the news this morning we let this one fall through the cracks: T-Mobile has picked up the Lumia 520, but as a 521 variant (they always have to be different). There’s no official date or pricing for the device, but we don’t believe it will be too long before the carrier picks it up, probably for $0 on contract or below $200 off contract.

The Lumia 521 fits in with T-Mobile’s plan to move towards non-subsidized phones, where the users buys their own flat out and then pays monthly for the service. In order to do that though they presumably need some good, but affordable deices: enter Nokia.

Tmonews have got hold of a leaked T-Mobile US roadmap, detailing a release date for a "Nokia Flame 4G" smartphone. Name rings a bell? If not, don't worry as we've previously covered the mysterious handset, which is a low-end offering if our report is anything to go by. But don't let that get you down as this is a 4G Windows Phone, and not everyone wants (or requires) a high-end smartphone.

The Lumia 810 on T-Mobile US is preparing itself for a massive boost in speed with the mobile operator revealing possibility of a software update to enable LTE connectivity. Unfortunately there's no timeframe as to when consumers will be able to take full advantage of the boost in speed with the 4G network utilisation, but an FCC filing adds more fuel to the fire with a possible date.

T-Mobile Germany has been reported to be working on adding visual voicemail, a feature that enables smartphone owners to view available voicemail messages in list, removing the requirement to contact the audio voicemail service. Should a handset and mobile operator support such functionality, it can prove to be an efficient way of managing messages left by contacts.

T-Mobile and HTC have begun pushing out Windows Phone 8 "Portico" to HTC 8X phones at 1PM ET.

T-Mobile and HTC have had quite a back and forth recently regarding the Windows Phone 8 “Portico” update (build 10211) We first heard about the 8X update just a few days ago and the original intent was to roll it out yesterday, December 19th. But at the last minute, we received word that T-Mobile was halting the rollout due to some last minute "tweaks".

The fear of course was that this could stretch into weeks as Microsoft, T-Mobile and HTC work to fix whatever it was holding up the update. Luckily, the delay now looks to be have been only 24 hours as T-Mobile and Microsoft have just now thrown the switch, delivering the update to customers.

Just yesterday it was brought to our attention that T-Mobile had posted details about the upcoming ‘Portico’ OS update for the HTC 8X Windows Phone. The combined over-the-air update was to bring new firmware in addition to the OS update to fix stability issues.

That update was announced to go live today but a few hours ago, T-Mobile and Microsoft pulled the plug on the update, resulting in a temporary delay.

The HTC 8X on T-Mobile is set to receive its 'Portico' update starting tomorrow, December 19th. The update info comes via T-Mobile’s own support forums and will include an OS as well as firmware updates, bringing both up to OS 10211 and firmware version 1532.20.20004.531. T-Mobile is also emailing customers to let them know about the update, which is a nice touch.

There are some interesting discussions going in our forums on the T-Mobile Lumia 810 (see our unboxing), which shows the phone is gaining some ground with customers.

First up is getting the phone carrier-unlocked. Sure, you may have to renew that contract (if not buying full price) but for those of you who want that freedom to take your phone anywhere, T-Mobile is evidently playing fair...

T-Mobile is currently running a Cyber Monday special that could land you a HTC 8X or Nokia Lumia 810 Windows Phone for free.  The deal is for new purchases and requires a two year contract with T-Mobile.

The deal on the 8X includes a $350 instant discount, a $149.99 web only discount and a $100 rebate.  To qualify for the rebate you'll need to sign up for either T-Mobile's Classic Talk + Text + Web plan or Classic Talk with web service of at least $20 per month.  Once you meet all the terms, just fill out the rebate form and mail it in.

The Cyber Monday deal on the Lumia 810 is a little more straight forward with $400 discount and $149.99 web only discount that drops the price to zero, zilch, nadda.  You do have to sign the two year contract and sign up for one of T-Mobile's Classic plans.

The fine print reads that these are web only offers and may not be available at retail stores.  You can find all the details here at T-Mobile.

Thanks, everyone, for the tip!

Have you been thinking of getting the Nokia Lumia 810 on T-Mobile? You should as it's a swell phone (our review will be coming this weekend). If you have thought about it, tomorrow may be your day as it looks like T-Mobile is on the cusp of unleashing their Black Friday sale.

Heading to their sale page, you can clearly see the Lumia 810 going for $0. That's roughly $150 off the original price (T-Mobile has it for $99 but that is only after a $50 mail in rebate, so it's actually $150 up front).
